On Saturday, December 6, 2008, we attended the presentation of The Big “D”.

As was discussed in a previous article, The Big “D” was a performance/play about being big “D” Deaf. The play was about Patti Spicer and her life growing up and all the difficulties she overcame. During the nearly two hour performance, Patti Spicer interpreted many ordeals from her life, including a trip to Italy and getting separated from her party, the inability to speak with her hands to paramedics when she was involved in an accident, shunning from classmates during university, and more.

The play opened with a display of many labels that people with disabilities might come across, including “Odd”, “Broken”, “Weird”, etc. These labels are later ‘wiped away’ by the actors near the conclusion of the play, after the audience comes to realize that people that are deaf can do anything a hearing person can, they just cannot hear.

During the performance, the audience was enlightned with watching Patti Spicer, as well as other actors, communicate through sign language, which was then interpreted vocally. Singing and dancing were also part of the event, as well as, and most important of all, insight into another persons lifestyle and experiences.

The Big “D” will be performed on December 4, 5 & 6 at the Medicine Hat College Theatre. The tickets cost $10 (as a donation) and are available right now at the college, but you can also get them at the door. The doors open at 7:30PM each night and the show starts at 8:00PM.

So what is “The Big D”? The Big D is a play/performance about being deaf or Deaf, or more specifically about people who are Deaf and what they go through being “big D’s”. The purpose of the performance is to give viewers a glimpse of the world in which Deaf people live. Notice my use of lower and uppercase deaf and Deaf, well, according to Deaf culture there is a difference between the two. Being deaf means you might be hearing impaired and may use a hearing aid or implant; however being Deaf means you are clinically or legally deaf.

I know it might be weird posting things like this (kind of like the Kinsmen Auction previously), but I think whenever there is chariable or public service event going on, people should know about it. I believe this is a good service on behalf of Medicine Hat Media as well, so these types of businesses/companies don’t have to waste as many advertising dollars trying to get the word out. Or maybe it’s not weird at all?

Last night, at midnight, the Medicine Hat Kinsmen Auction (Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat) opened bidding on their online auction site. Already it has picked up some steam with many registered members and tons of active bids. This year there is a huge selection of items ranging anywhere from home hardware, automotive, and even technology. To give you an example of some of the generous donations this year, 4 separate pool tables were donated to the cause each retailing from $3500 to $6000!

The donations are all made by local businesses and stores all over Medicine Hat – places like Ideal Jewelery, Jackson Dodge, Moxie’s, Cactus RV, Sterling Trailers, Ultimate Spas, Ralph’s Texas Bar & Steakhouse and that’s just to name a very random few.  Other items include digital cameras, a XBOX 360, tons of gift cards and gift baskets, free rooms at lodges/hotels, watches, collectibles, and tons more. Maybe it’s just best if you check it out for yourself…

Not that it is really Medicine Hat-based, but the other day, on November 22, 2008, YouTube broadcast it’s first and hopefully annual event called YouTube Live. Although, in a way, since it is on the Internet, it is like it is actually in Medicine Hat, if not everywhere at once.

YouTube Live was broadcast live from San Fransisco and featured about three and a half hours of live show coverage as well as backstage cameras and audience cameras. The event was highly geared towards Internet phenomena from all around the world who had “made it big” using YouTube’s services. People and acts from all over joined in San Fransisco to participate. The most amazing part to me was the fact that I knew about probably 80% of the acts and people and who they were and what they did to gain fame, and to see them all come together was wonderful.

The acts included performances by Joe Satriani with FunTwo, Mythbusters, Fred, Katy Perry, Chad Vader, The Spinto Band, and much more.

Check http://www.youtube.com/user/live for more information and videos of the show.

And of course, check http://www.youtube.com/MHCVideo for a bunch of videos that students in Visual Communications at the Medicine Hat College have created.

*Updated November 26th, 2008*

As part of officially kicking off the Christmas season, starting at 6:00PM on Thursday, November 27th, the Medicine Hat downtown area will be hosting “Midnight Madness”. Many businesses downtown will have their doors opened until midnight – many featuring huge deals and savings. Labels For Men & Women, for example, will opening their second floor for this night only – trying to sell huge amounts of their inventory at reduced prices. For a complete listing of businesses and places having sales, take a look at this huge list on the Downtown Medicine Hat site.

Other events include Santa arriving at the city hall at 6PM, tree lighting ceremony, Christmas carols, ice sculptures, free parking and the international festival of trees. I’m not sure what that last one is about, but I guess you have to go down and check it out to find out. For more information and complete listing of events, check out the Downtown Medicine Hat site events page.

This is madness! Madness? This is MEDICINE HAAAAAT! (300 reference for good measure)
