Midnight Madness is over and done, but get ready to spend some more holiday cash on Moonlight Madness! Moonlight Madness takes place solely at the Medicine Hat Mall from 7:00PM to 11:00PM. It works a little different then the downtown counter-part as well. Instead of set deals and savings at a store, they change every 15 minutes, so you might have to go there at specific times to get the deal you want – kind of a cool concept. Some shops also have all-night deals on top of the 15 minute sales as well (view the bottom of the list to see these).

The Medicine Hat Mall followed suit again this year and decided NOT to place the deal list and times on their own site, instead giving the Medicine Hat News an exclusive, which might be on purpose, but certainly not good for them – why not have it on both? Anyways, this opens up an opportunity for us: THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

As an addendum to the Midnight Madness Downtown 2009 article recently posted, the Esplanade has a great line-up scheduled for Thursday:

Medicine Hat Tigers Add to the Madness at the Esplanade

The Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre celebrates Midnight Madness on Thursday, Nov. 26 with a free craft workshop for kids, free admission to the galleries, guided tours, free hot chocolate and popcorn, and an Xbox™ tournament against a Medicine Hat Tiger hockey player. Midnight Madness activities are free and open to the public.

“The Art Gallery and Museum are currently showcasing Hockey Culture at the Esplanade with three exhibitions related to hockey, so it was natural to invite the Medicine Hat Tigers downtown for Midnight Madness to continue the whole hockey theme,” says Joanne Marion, Curator of Art at the Esplanade. View Midnight Madness 2011 Instead

I just realized when we received a comment on our last years Midnight Madness article that this year’s event is quickly approaching. This year, Midnight Madness will be taking place on Thursday night (November 26th). Most of the deals and sales that most business owners promote will start at 6PM and last all the way till midnight. Some of the yearly events include Santa arriving at City Hall, a tree lighting ceremony, Christmas carols, ice sculptures, and the international festival of trees.

The Downtown Medicine Hat website has recently changed their page to promote the event as seen here which details, new comer to this year, The Monarch Theatre having free admission for Midnight Madness. Midnight Madness is primarily a downtown event, but I’m sure some other shops around town also take part. Or, in the case of the Medicine Hat Mall – they have their own event which is called Moonlight Madness which we also posted about last year – still waiting for some information on this one for this year.

Alternatively, for more information, there is a couple businesses listing their own events/information on the Shop the Hat website event list.

Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with Whip It!, the story of an indie rock-loving misfit named Bliss Cavendar (played by Juno’s Ellen Page) who, against her traditional Texan mother’s objections, leaves the world of teen beauty pageants and tiaras behind after joining a roller-derby team in Austin. While her new-found hobby causes tensions at home, the rebellious teen learns that when your small-town misery gets you down, sometimes you just have to strap on a pair of skates and become your own hero.

“Barrymore has so thoroughly laced Whip It with her own lunatic affections for women and the human race in general that it ought to be sold as an antidepressant.” – Wesley Morris, The Boston Globe

“Scene for scene and beat for beat, this roller derby crowd-pleaser crackles with joy and jubilation.” – Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

The Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta is proud to announce the first in a series of 2009-2010 Vital Activities, a spin-off of its Medicine Hat’s Vital Signs publication.

“Waste Not, Want Not: Recycling in Medicine Hat — the who, how, when and what’s next!” will take place on Thursday, November 19 from 12 – 1:30 PM in the Honor Currie Room in the Medicine Hat Public Library. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch.

Panel members include Ed Jollymore, manager of solid waste utilities for the City of Medicine Hat, Randy Bray, operations supervisor at REDI Enterprises, and Raeann Torrance, owner of local curbside recycling company Down To Earth Recycling.

“Our moderator will ask our panel members questions related to the present and future of recycling in Medicine Hat,” said Jennifer Thompson, community impact coordinator for the Community Foundation. “We hope to give the public a better idea of how we can improve recycling in our area and perhaps glean an idea of what local recycling might look like in the future.”

This “Vital Munch” will also include a new component: interactive questions from the online community. Using the library’s new wireless internet service, Thompson will be online to write live “tweets” from the event on the foundation’s Twitter account (@cfmh). Followers can be part of the discussion by responding to tweets or even tweeting their own questions to ask the panel. Questions can also be directed to jennifer@mhcf.ca. The Monarch Theatre is pleased to present two special screenings of V for Vendetta on November 4th and 5th at 7:30PM.

Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked vigilante known only as “V.” Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government-controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V’s mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself – and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plot to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.
