I told you there would be more of these types of events this summer!  This one is not a running event, but a walking event, meaning anybody should be able to join and participate. Judging by the name of the event, you could also be able to guess this a Alzhemier cure event brought to you by the Alzhemier Society and Investors Group.

It will be taking place in several locations throughout Canada on June 20th, 2009, but in Medicine Hat, it will take place in Kin Coulee Park. Registration is at 10:00 AM and the walking starts at 10:30 AM. For more information please call 403-528-2700. The registration fee is $15 dollars after June 1st and you are encouraged to raise/pledge money in an effort to help “Alberta make history by raising $200,000”. This goal will be shared with all Alberta events which takes place in 6 locations within Alberta so it’s quite possible. All money raised will go to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and there is several prizes and rewards to win for raising money.

You can register and find more information at the following sites:

Snow, in June?

Snow, in June?

As if it was any wonder to most people, Spectrum 2009 has been officially cancelled. This morning I awoke to a delightful snowy day, well it would have been delightful if it wasn’t June and wasn’t Spectrum weekend. Although the yearly festival went ahead as scheduled on Friday night (with small attendance), it was cancelled on Saturday citing concerns for not only the weather, but for safety, as described in this Medicine Hat News article. The article also explains that it is not only cancelled, but it is really cancelled, as in, it’s not going to be re-booked or delayed because the money and planning has already been spent for this year.

It’s really a sad thing for the coordinators, the events planners, the entertainment and even the businesses; however, some shops downtown still had their pre-planned sales going on that were meant to bank off a steady stream of Spectrum go-ers. On the up side, a lot of people are happy about the move from Kin Coulee back into the downtown, hopefully it will stick for next year.

On Sunday, June 21st, 2009 it will be the YMCA’s 25th anniversary Father’s Day River Run in Medicine Hat. Judging on how successful the recent Relay for Life was, which brought in an amazing 800 people and $290,000 in fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society – it would seem people love running and fundraising in Medicine Hat. Although this running event is a little different, expect a lot of these things to happen this summer. The following is a transcript from the pamphlet if you need more information. You can also grab the .PDF entry form and pamphlet here.

Looking for the Spectrum 2010 post?

The beginning of Medicine Hat’s summer season  has arrived and to kick it all off the annual Spectrum Festival has returned to celebrate the sunshine that makes us “Canada’s Sunniest City”. As with previous years Spectrum will once again take place the first weekend of June, which this year begins on June 5 and proceeds right through to June 7. The festival runs from 4 to 10 p.m on Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and wraps up on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All festivities can be found scattered throughout BATUS Park and the rest of Downtown Medicine Hat.

Although a concrete schedule has yet to be released regarding many of the performances and demonstrations, rest assured that there will be plenty of entertainment to be had all weekend long. Some of the highlights include the children’s carnival, the pedal tractor farm, Praxis science activities, dunk tanks, Environment Week activities in the Esplanade, 3 on 3 volleyball, a chess exhibition and much more than can easily be listed. Performers such as HOJA, Trevor Moore, J-Fish, The Lyle Rebbeck Jazz Band, and Mr. Puffin will also be present on the Kinsmen free stage throughout the weekend. Earl’s Restaurant, Moxie’s Classic Grill, KC Jax Ultra Lounge and Grill, Tony Roma’s, Delio’s Trattorio, and Mario’s Ristorante are providing food for hungry festival goers and will be situated in the Mario’s parking lot. Not only are there plenty of activities and performances to enjoy but a variety of local vendors also set up kiosks in BATUS Park to sell their trinkets, toys, and other wares.

I have been a resident of Medicine Hat since I was a small child and I have attended the Spectrum Festival multiple times over the years and it has yet to disappoint me. Since being moved back to its original location in Downtown from Kin Coulee the old fashioned atmosphere has increased exponentially and the benefits of having so many people in a sometimes ignored corner of our city are immeasurable when considering the number of local businesses located in the area. With plenty of fun for both the kiddies, their parents and everyone in between make your way down to the Spectrum Festival this year for fun, sun, great food, and… did I say fun?

The Staples Business Depot in Medicine Hat will be hosting a garage/yard sale on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31, and will be open for duration of the regular store hours.

The garage sale will consist primarily of the clearance racks, as well as a little bit of extra stuff, all being moved outdoors for customers to browse while enjoying the hopeful sunshine, and as it is supposed to be in the plus 20’s, sunshine is likely.

Check it out if you are looking for some business supplies.

Business hours:
Saturday: 10AM – 6PM
Sunday: 11AM – 5PM

As found in the Medicine Hat News: The Medicine Hat and District Food Bank is holding a garage sale and BBQ this weekend. It will be held on Saturday (May 23rd), from 9AM to 4PM in the food bank parking lot which is at 532 South Railway St. SE. It is a charity-style garage sale which means anybody can bring items to donate; although I think the deadline just ended as I am posting this. There will be both breakfast (coffee and muffin for $1) and lunch (burger, chips and pop for $3) available to visitors.

Also, keep in mind, as posted earlier, The Farmer’s Market will officially open Saturday as well. Looks like I got lots of shopping to do tomorrow!

Medicine Hat will be visited on May 27, 2009, by Duane Chapman, or more popularly known as Dog The Bounty Hunter from the television show of the same name that airs on A&E. Dog will be performing publicly about second chances and faith.

Duane Chapman, or Dog for short, is most well known for his A&E television series, but little known otherwise is that he and his wife, Beth, tour the United States and Canada to do public speaking.

This event will be part of Emerge – A city-wide, non-denominational youth event, and will be helped at Central Neighbourhood Hub. And best of all, all the proceeds from the event on May 27 will go to the Eagle’s Nest Ranch (www.enr.ca).

Earlier we posted a huge resource for buying and selling in Medicine Hat on Facebook here, but Garage Sale Medicine Hat is the largest and most active by far, not to mention the great service they provide by supplying this map.
