Risk Tournament

Risk Tournament

Recently launched, Game for Good is a website and non-profit volunteer organization (if you can call it that) whereby, true to the name, games are played for the good of something. In the case of this event, a Risk tournament will be taking place under the Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund. This has been set-up, facilitated, organized and promoted almost exclusively by Jace Anderson, voted the #1 Medicine Hat tweep earlier in the month by Medicine Hat Media. I know, I didn’t list them in numbers, but I think most people would agree he is the number one Medicine Hat Tweep anyways, especially after this. Also involved was Derek Gavey, who set up the website, he is a known commentator on Medicine Hat Media, and was also mentioned in the top Medicine Hat tweeps post.

Anyways, back to the matter at hand: RISK! For those of you that don’t know what Risk is, wait, never mind, Google it, why don’t you know what Risk is? There is no entry fee; however, there is a minimum donation of $20 that goes directly to the Santa Claus Fund and you will be issued a tax deductible receipt. The winner of the tournament will take home a nice $200 (including bragging rights) as well as possible other prizes to those who register early or even show up. The tournament will be taking place December 5th at 9:30AM, at the Cultural Centre and you need to register before December 1st.

There’s been several companies and businesses around the Hat that have either sponsored a table (money donation) or donated some goods and services for the tournament. These include Bean There! Roasting, Classic Construction, and Accessible Accessories so far on the docket. There is still sponsorship spots available if any business or organization is out there reading this.

More information can be found in the Media Release (PDF). I’m sure Jace will comment here if he has anything to add.

Keith's 214th Birthday

Keith's 214th Birthday

Today (October 5th) is Alexander Keith’s 214th Birthday, and hatters can celebrate tonight with the annual party at The Silver Buckle. East coast celtic folk trio The Stables will be the entertainment of the evening (they actually have a bass made out of a hockey stick, a wash basin and a string, that’s reason alone to check it out). There will be giveaways all night, with the grand prize a limited edition beer barrel bar fridge, which has been on display at The Buckle for the last week or so, as well as the staple Keith’s foam antlers and commemorative pint glasses.

The party gets started at 9:00PM, $5 at the door.

The Historic Clay District’s Transportation Committee is hosting an information session on Thursday, October 4 from 7:30 – 8:30pm at the Medalta Potteries National Historic Site.

The Transportation Committee is responsible for the restoration of the 1912 CPR caboose that is currently situated in the Medalta Potteries’ courtyard and all other aspects of transportation related to the Historic Clay District. The session is designed to educate interested individuals on the scope of the project and suggest areas where help is needed.

Everyone interested is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.

The Historic Clay District is one of eight attractors in the Canadian Badlands, is featured in AMA’s “Alberta 100 Journeys” and is Western Canada’s largest National Historic Site. The District museum – in the Medalta Potteries National Historic Site – provides visitors a unique opportunity to visit a restored 1912 pottery factory, which once produced three-quarters of all stoneware in Canada. It is operated under the stewardship of the Friends of Medalta Society.

Joshua Key will be speaking at the Unisphere meeting room at Westminster Church at 7 p.m. on October 2.  He is hoping to raise awareness and support for US soldiers that are seeking refuge in Canada.

Joshua Key joined the US Army in 2002 and served in Iraq for one tour. He never expected to see battle (he claims his recruiter said he never would) and he suffered post-traumatic stress when he returned. He could not go back in good conscience and faced going to prison unless he did. After being on the lam he eventually deserted to Canada in 2005 where he remains awaiting a federal court ruling on his immigration status.

His book, The Deserter’s Tale, is an indictment on the US effort in Iraq. It’s a fairly disturbing read as he recounts what he witnessed in Iraq in a very matter-of-fact manner. I was able to read most of it and it’s worth checking out if you find the subject matter interesting. There is currently a copy available at the library (it’s actually at the Brook’s library but you can have it brought to Medicine Hat if you request it).  If you can’t make it you can check out the link below to hear him speak.

From an e-mail I received from Monday Nights at the Movies:
We have three great films lined up for this fall. We’ll be at the Galaxy for the first three films this season – be sure to mark Monday September 21 (Goodbye Solo), Monday October 19 (The Hurt Locker) and Monday November 9 (Is Anybody There?) on your calendars. December’s film will be screened on Monday, December 14, but the venue and film selection will be determined later this fall.

Passes and brochures are now available at the Information Desk of the Public Library and Fresh Flowers and Gifts (in Riverside – 63 3rd St. NE). Also, we’ll have a booth in front of the Esplanade this coming Saturday, in conjunction with the Arts Festival – drop by to buy your passes, or just to talk about films.

Prices are unchanged from last year – 4-passes are $26, and can be used by more than one person at each showing / 9 passes are $50 and can only be used once for each showing (except for December and May, when you can invite a guest to take advantage of any unused dates). Single tickets are available at the door for $8 –  students with a student card are entitled to 2-for-the-price-of-1 admission.

Goodbye Solo has a rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes; it’s rated 14A in Alberta for coarse language. For a description of the film with links, visit the Monday Night at the Movies website.
