Students at St. Mary’s School are getting everything in order for next week’s performances of they’re most challenging musical yet – Fiddler on the Roof Jr.

This special edition of one of Broadway’s greatest masterpieces, Fiddler on the Roof Junior, covers the full range of human emotions as seen through the eyes of one of the greatest stage characters, Tevye the Dairyman. With this production, St. Mary’s School continues to bring outstanding musical theatre for the whole family to Medicine Hat.

Probably the most challenging task of this one is reaching out to the kids, having performed in 3 of the musicals myself, they will not compare in any way to this.

St. Mary’s is back with their annual presentation at the Esplanade starting April 27-28 at 7:00 PM. Cost to see this play is $10.00 + S/C and GST. Call 403-502-8777 for tickets or visit Tixx Central.

Friday night, Sean and I had the pleasure of enjoying The Children’s Hour in the Cultural Centre’s Blackbox Theatre. The play began promptly at 7:30 and the high-quality of the acting was immediately evident. I have never seen such excellent acting in a Medicine Hat production, many of the actors in The Children’s Hour were near the calibre of the actor’s I’ve seen on Broadway (however, that is hard to judge without numerous over-the-top dance numbers). The storyline was thought provoking and had no shortage of moral dilemmas to ponder following the performance. The bleachers were packed, and the rest of the audience seemed to enjoy the performance as much as Sean and I.

I have only one minor critique to offer, as I usually do in reviews like this. First of all, the play began at 7:30 and ended at 10:10, and it definitely felt that long due to the slow progression of the plot. This fact was not helped along by the two ten-minute intermission that coincided with set changes. In most, if not all, other plays I’ve been to the customary practice is to have one intermission following the longer section of the play, with a significantly shorter section following the break. Until now I had not realized how beneficial such a practice is. The play last night seemed much longer than it was, since the first scene was 45 minutes long, the second roughly 20 minutes, and the final scene was approximately 30 minutes with short intermissions between the scenes. In short, it felt like it was dragging toward the end, which is unfortunate since the play was excellent otherwise.

I hope this play precedes many more excellent performances in this city!

It is Earth Hour on Saturday March 27 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Earth Hour is about taking simple steps everyday that collectively reduce carbon emissions – from businesses turning off their lights when offices are empty to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.

The City will be participating in Earth Hour by turning off the lights at City Hall, The Esplanade and the Library.

“Earth Hour is an excellent opportunity for the City to engage the community in a discussion around responsible energy use,” says Russ Smith, energy sustainability manager.

What will you be doing? Here are a few different ways to spend Earth Hour and reduce your carbon footprint:

  1. Gather family and friends for a night picnic in your local park and gaze at the stars. Try to identify some of the constellations in the night sky.
  2. Enjoy a family dinner by candlelight
  3. Organize a treasure hunt in the dark using wind up flashlights
  4. Take the dog for a late evening walk
  5. Enjoy a candle-lit soak in the bathtub
  6. Sit in the dark and share stories
  7. Organize a family night playing board games

To find out more about Earth Hour, visit the official website www.earthhour.org. Sign up and join millions of people in more than 1,400 cities and towns in 80 countries by turning off your lights for one hour starting at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27.

Job Fair 2010 addresses the needs of employers in the current economy.

Today’s labour market looks much different than it did a few years ago, and with many employers now having the ability to draw from an unusually large labour pool, employee recruitment and retention has become an entirely new ballgame. With this in mind, the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the Medicine Hat College to bring an emphasis on the needs of employers to their Job Fair for 2010.

Executive Director of the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce, Lisa Kowalchuk, commented that “this is a valuable event for employers looking to recruit in the next year. Not only does it afford them an opportunity to attract quality employees, but also a chance to gain insight and knowledge that will help them effectively select new employees and streamline their recruitment processes.”

Several new components have been added to this year’s event, including a networking breakfast for employers from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, followed by a keynote presentation by Charmaine Hammond, an internationally renowned speaker, author, instructor, and business owner from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM. The focus of Hammond’s presentation will be ‘Igniting Resilience” and will provide insight on how to handle change and uncertainty in today’s economy. THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

9th Annual Medicine Hat Film Festival

9th Annual Medicine Hat Film Festival

The 9th Annual Medicine Hat Film Festival is a five-day event that will be held from February 24 – 28, 2010. We are pleased to announce that our festival will take place at The Monarch Theatre in downtown Medicine Hat. Our group brings to Medicine Hat some of the best films shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. Often we provide the only opportunity for people to see them on the big screen in the Hat. To complement the great films, we host some of the actors, directors and producers to talk about their films after the screening, followed by a reception at the Cypress Club. We also show a film for families. The Medicine Hat Film Festival has created a rich cultural experience for the people of southern Alberta. Profits from the festival have gone toward building and maintaining the DVD collection at the Medicine Hat Public Library. In addition, we provide funding for the free films shown on a regular basis at the library. Thanks for helping us to continue the Medicine Hat Film Festival.

Operation: Bella Bomb Poster

Operation: Bella Bomb Poster

We haven’t really posted anything about the Gas City Rollers before on Medicine Hat Media and when I take a look back, I can’t really think of why. I might do a follow up post about the Gas City Rollers in a more in-depth look, but for right now, all you need to know is: They are a roller derby group based in Medicine Hat who are participating in their debut bout as a team facing off against Calgary’s B52 Bellas.

The all-ages showdown will be taking place on Saturday, February 20th at the Cypress Centre. Admission will be $5.00, doors open at 6:00 and the game starts at 7:00.

Hedwig & The Angry Inch

Hedwig & The Angry Inch

Being more of a punk rocker than a theatre-goer, when I caught wind of this production happening in Medicine Hat, I couldn’t resist getting on board. Here’s the scoop…

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a rock musical about a fictional rock and roll band (The Angry Inch) front by an East German transgender singer. The musical premiered off-broadway in 1998 and the film adaptation was released in 2000, starring and produced by writer John Cameron Mitchell.

The local production features 11 full songs, with the band on stage throughout the entire show, a band featuring a handful of local punk rock veterans (One Shot Left, Rex Stiff, Iverdale). You can guarantee this will be the heaviest rock musical to ever run in Medicine Hat!

When: March 12-13, 18-20
Where: Community Theatre Arts Centre (1221 10th Avenue SW)
Tickets: Adults – $24, Students – $19 (with valid student ID)
