Grease PosterAs part of the Monarch Theatre Revitalization Project, “Films Al Fresco”, this weekend’s movie is 50′s musical extravaganza Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. The movie will be playing in Kin Coulee Park Band Shell on Saturday, July 18th at 9:00PM.

People are reminded to bring a blanket or a lawn chair as there is no fixed seating, so your probably want to show up a bit earlier to get a good spot. Concessions will consist of pop, popcorn, chips, candy and chocolate bars. Also, in addition to the movie, members of the Medicine Hat Vintage Vehicles Association will have some vintage cars on display – a suiting reference to Grease.

For more information check out The Monarch Theatre Website. Thanks to Ashley Meller for the submission.

A small portion of Tyle'rs amazing collection

A small portion of Tyler's amazing collection

How many times have you been sitting around a board game alone, just wishing you had some friends who were into that kind of thing to come over and play? O.K., this has probably never happened to any of you, but this exact thing used to happen to Medicine Hat resident Tyler McLaughlin about twice a week, until he got fed up and started a club. That was six years ago…

Tyler’s club has 20+ members and a catalog of around 1000 different games. They meet every Thursday night at 6:30 pm until they are done (around midnight) at the Volunteer Center, 211 – 4th St SE. There is a one dollar nightly fee, with a tournament held with prizes about every three months or so.

“As well as being really fun, board gaming can impart regular players with new skills or help to improve old ones all while you get to make new friends and be out of the house. We tend to focus on games which can improve processing speed, spatial reasoning, leadership and coaching abilities, cognitive abilities, communication skills and a stronger sense of self confidence. We also tend to talk about probability and other math now and again, as that’s all part of being good at the games.” says Tyler. THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Canada Day is coming up and there will be a whole lot of events going on in and around the city.

The Canada Day celebration kicks off at 730AM at the Lion’s Club with a pancake breakfast and officially ends with Fireworks in Kin Coulee park.  I sure hope the hills in the coulee start on fire again, that is at least half the fireworks entertainment value!

Other entertainment will include bands, lotteries, food and snack stands, and of course, merchandise.

A compilation of the events can be found on the events section of the Canada Day Medicine Hat website, check it out.

Monarch Theatre Media Release

The Monarch Theatre is holding a series of film showings entitled “Films Al Fresco” as part of the Monarch Theatre Revitalization Project.

The films will be shown every Saturday in July and August (except July 11th), at the Kin Coulee Park band shell and start at approximately 9:00pm.

Please bring a blanket or a chair as there is no fixed seating, so get there early for the best view. A small concession with some of your favorite movie snacks will be available on site during the events.

For those who are unaware, the Monarch Theatre is a theater downtown that was closed a couple years ago but is now re-opening and will run as a not-for-profit movie theatre and performance space for five days out of the week. It was purchased by the City Centre Development Agency (CCDA).

For more information check out The Monarch Theatre Website.

There are a few teepees set up in Kin Park at the intersection of 9th Street and Allowance Avenue in celebration of the upcoming National Aboriginal Day, which is marked by the summer solstice and occurs on Sunday, June 21.

The event promises to be educational to the aboriginal cultures, including First Nations, Metis and Inuit cultures, and they want everyone in the community to participate in the experience by going down and checking out what is going on.

Everything kicks off at Noon on June 21 with the raising of a ceremonial teepee and is followed up by a traditional pow wow dance, singing, games, as well as arts and crafts.

I personally think it would have been more interesting to set up the teepees by the giant teepee off the Trans Canada to both relate to why that big teepee is there, and attract some passerby attention, but oh well.

Check it out!

I told you there would be more of these types of events this summer!  This one is not a running event, but a walking event, meaning anybody should be able to join and participate. Judging by the name of the event, you could also be able to guess this a Alzhemier cure event brought to you by the Alzhemier Society and Investors Group.

It will be taking place in several locations throughout Canada on June 20th, 2009, but in Medicine Hat, it will take place in Kin Coulee Park. Registration is at 10:00 AM and the walking starts at 10:30 AM. For more information please call 403-528-2700. The registration fee is $15 dollars after June 1st and you are encouraged to raise/pledge money in an effort to help “Alberta make history by raising $200,000″. This goal will be shared with all Alberta events which takes place in 6 locations within Alberta so it’s quite possible. All money raised will go to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and there is several prizes and rewards to win for raising money.

You can register and find more information at the following sites:

Snow, in June?

Snow, in June?

As if it was any wonder to most people, Spectrum 2009 has been officially cancelled. This morning I awoke to a delightful snowy day, well it would have been delightful if it wasn’t June and wasn’t Spectrum weekend. Although the yearly festival went ahead as scheduled on Friday night (with small attendance), it was cancelled on Saturday citing concerns for not only the weather, but for safety, as described in this Medicine Hat News article. The article also explains that it is not only cancelled, but it is really cancelled, as in, it’s not going to be re-booked or delayed because the money and planning has already been spent for this year.

It’s really a sad thing for the coordinators, the events planners, the entertainment and even the businesses; however, some shops downtown still had their pre-planned sales going on that were meant to bank off a steady stream of Spectrum go-ers. On the up side, a lot of people are happy about the move from Kin Coulee back into the downtown, hopefully it will stick for next year.

Judging on how successful the recent Relay for Life was, which brought in an amazing 800 people and $290,000 in fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society – it would seem people love running and fundraising in Medicine Hat.
