With the recently implemented Medicine Hat Media option of using a Web-based feed, I want to mention a feed that I set up a month or so ago to allow listening to hour-long CBC Radio 2 Podcasts of mainly Canadian talent. You may also download the MP3 file directly to your computer from the feed as well.

One that I would like to mention is the podcast on October 7th, 2008 that features the famous Country artist, Corb Lund of Taber.

Beef Jerky is an addiction that many people share. Fortunately, there are many cattle ranchers in Alberta, and as such, the Medicine Hat area has no shortage of fresh jerky that is vacuum sealed.

Taylor and I both share this addiction, so a few months ago we took up the task of finding out the best places to get jerky around Medicine Hat and compiled the following list:

Premium Sausage is a locally owned meat store located in Seven Persons, Alberta (about 15 minutes out of Medicine Hat on Highway #3). They have both beef jerky and pork jerky, although the beef is a little stringy, but the pork is exceptional. Apart from jerky, they have a wide selection of meats, baked goods, and the business functions as a General Store of sorts for the Seven Persons community and surround. My previous post on the Premium Sausage store can be viewed here.

Sobeys is a grocery store in town and has some of the best beef jerky in town. They stock three flavours: Regular, Peppered and Teriyaki, all of which are very good.

Mike’s Meats is a locally owned meat store located on Foundry Street in Medicine Hat. Their beef jerky is top notch and I have been back there numerous times. Apart from jerky, they are much like any other meat store, carrying an assortment of meat products.

Reg’s Homestyle Meats & Deli Ltd is a locally owned store located along Sierra Drive SW in the Southridge area of Medicine Hat. They have beef jerky, although it is pre-packaged, and sometimes deer jerky. Along with this, they have a lot of frozen meat-goods, ice creams, drinks, and a deli. Reg’s is a regular stop for me and Taylor, not for the jerky, but because their deli makes the best sandwiches ever.

Medicine Hat Farmer’s Market is, as title says, a market for farmers. They come and sell their wares, a lot of which includes jerky and other meat. Most of the attending farmers who raise cattle have their own style of processing jerky that vary in type (Angus and Deer being notable) and flavour. The Farmers Market is without a doubt the place to go for the biggest selection of jerky in town. Vaughn did a post on the market in the Spring and can be viewed here.

Medicine Hat Meat Traders is a local business in Medicine Hat that processes and sells natural meat. Their “Dang Good Jerky” is just as it says, dang good! They have different kinds of jerky and is by far one of the best in town.

The Monarch Theatre is premiering the second-to-last film of their summer series ‘Films Al Fresco’ on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 9:00PM at the Kin Coulee Park Band Shell. The movie this evening will be the 1987 twisted fairy tale The Princess Bride starring Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Billy Crystal, Fred Savage, Peter Falk, Mandy Patinkin, Christopher Guest, Chris Sarandon, and Wallace Shawn.

      The Monarch The Princess Bride

“It’s a lively, fun-loving, but nevertheless epic look at the nature of true love.” – Rita Kempley, The Washington Post

Welcome to the magical kingdom of Florin, the ultimate imaginary land, complete with dashing heroes, cowardly princes, rhyming giants, shrieking eels, rodents of unusual size, fancy swordfights, and yes…even some kissing. When the lovely Buttercup is kidnapped (and saved from an undesirable engagement to be married), she is pursued by a mysterious stranger in black who bears a striking resemblance to her true love Wesley, who she thought had died many years earlier. As Buttercup and her motley crew of captors make their way across the land, trying to evade the man in black, she comes to realize that courage, honour, heroism, friendship and love are just life’s little excuses to have a great adventure. A clever, satirical, and outrageously funny fairy tale for all ages, The Princess Bride is arguably one of the most entertaining films of all time.

New look for the Santa Claus Fund website

New look for the Santa Claus Fund website

Lately, I’ve been trying to get around to featuring all the new local websites that have been popping up lately, but it’s really hard writing about all of them on a weekly basis now. It almost seems like around 2 or 3 of them pop up per week – I guess I am not helping the situation either, as it’s part of my profession, haha.

This week we have a new website for the Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund (Society). The logo was designed by local design studio, December 2nd, while the website was created and designed by TriCube Media for a Medicine Hat News organization. It’s great when three local companies can come together and develop something; albeit, TriCube Media and Medicine Hat News were already working together. The website URL has also changed over to “mhsantafund” rather than the obscure “mhscf”.

A great section of the site is the event section which is a huge list of events taking place as part of the Santa Claus Fund. The 17 or so events are all happening from July to December and most of them are recurring yearly. Hopefully we can even post a couple of them on Medicine Hat Media when they are near. There was a full story about the make-over posted in the Medicine Hat News today.

All information about the organization can be found on the new website.

Brooks has it’s own TV station now. Well… sort of.

Darin Crapo, an IT specialist in Brooks, has taken a video making hobby to a higher level. He created a series of tourism videos for the county of Newell. Working in this genre and doing these projects has brought him in contact with a number of aspiring videographers in his hometown.

Darin decided he would create a forum for himself and other video makers, where they could showcase Brooks, as well as Southern Alberta. It’s called 4U2CTV and is quickly becoming Brooks TV.

A couple of months ago in Veterans-Riverside Park there were a bunch of paving stones removed from around the tank area. These pavers were lifted and used to make a large fire pit. I couldn’t help but think how long it must have taken to construct this and the fact that nobody reported a fire going in the park.

Don’t know why, but I’m always surprised to see that there is a common problem of homeless and transients downtown. I’m never downtown in the Wee hours when I guess a lot of trespassing and vandalism occurs. I don’t think most people see this side of our City.

Vaughn says: As part of Medicine Hat Media’s new partnership with the City of Medicine Hat, we will now be posting their press releases a long with any news or announcements coming from their website in association with Corporate Communications Manager, Jody Lamb. Here’s the first of such posts:

The City of Medicine Hat is launching its new automated waste collection system in September. A 95-gallon waste cart will be delivered to each Medicine Hat resident with an active solid waste account.

“We are excited to introduce this new and improved system of collecting residential solid waste,” said Ed Jollymore, solid waste utility manager. “This system, used by many municipalities nationwide, is one of the most advanced in the industry. These carts will provide for a cleaner environment, better looking streets on collection day and a much safer collection method.”

The carts have two wheels for easy handling and an attached lid that reduces odours and helps keep out insects and stray animals.

Here are some important tips about the new automated waste collection service: THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »
