Area non-profit organizations will have a chance to learn more about the Community Foundation’s grant application process at a workshop on Wednesday.

All interested parties are invited to attend the “Grant Application Workshop,” where Community Foundation executive director Mike Christie will guide applicants through the forms and process.

“During past grant cycles we have found the workshop very valuable,” said Christie. “It leads to higher quality grant applications and makes the process easier on both the applicants and grant committee members.”

Applicants are under no obligation to attend the workshop, as it is not a required part of the grant application process.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday, July 29 from 12 – 1:30 PM at the Volunteer and Community Information Centre located at 211 4th St. SE. Coffee will be provided and attendees are welcome to bring their lunch. THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

One thing that is important to Medicine Hat Media are the visitors and potential for a community. With a growing amount of visitors, we have to try to keep the site updated and current as much as possible, which isn’t always easy given the circumstances. Along the way we have developed quite a following, but there is still room for growth and improvement which this post highlights. I know, what I wrote might not have anything to do with the article, but in a way it does, because the most of the statistics relate to our visitors.

Here’s a little information thus far, as of  July 26th, 2009 about Medicine Hat Media’s visitors, connections, general information, and statistics on and off the site since our launch in October, 2008.

Getting your local news and stories is getting easier and easier in Medicine Hat. We are also tooting our own horn by saying we’ve been helping in this very field; however, there is a couple places you may not be aware of, and others which are second nature to most living in the hat.

Medicine Hat News

Medicine Hat News

This can be filled under the “duh” category. The Medicine Hat News website is a great source of free local news. For a bit more, you can subscribe to the digital or physical version of the paper to get more news and events. Typically, less than half of the news gets put online that is in the actual subscription versions which a lot of people surprisingly don’t know. Some places of relevant interest on the site include:

CJCY-FM News

102.1 The Lounge’s news section on their new website features local news stories as reported by a small team of four including: Joe McFarland, Christy Mitchell, Steve Krysak and Harv Speers. There is quite a few good stories posted every so often and typically 2-3 stories go up every workday. They are usually pretty short, but nice and to the point. As of right now I can’t figure out how to see previous news stories as the news page only shows the 15 last news stories with no option of going further back. Either way, a good free news resource.

Maverick Rides Again

Maverick Rides Again

The Monarch Theatre’s “Films Al Fresco” series is premiering its third film of the summer on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 9:00PM at the Kin Coulee Park Band Shell.

Our movie on this evening will be the western comedy “Maverick” (1994) starring Mel Gibson, James Garner, Jodie Foster, James Coburn, Alfred Molina, and Graham Greene.

From the director of The Goonies and Lethal Weapon, and the writer of The Princess Bride, Maverick is the story of Bret Maverick, that charming, amoral gambler of TV fame. He’s back, and still wreaking comic havoc wherever he goes. This time, Maverick’s out to compete in the Three Rivers Poker Championship, but he’s got one small problem: he still needs another three grand for the entrance fee. Soon he finds himself in all sorts of trouble – being held up in a bank robbery, trapped on runaway stagecoach, shot at by a Russian archduke, and held captive by natives… doing anything he must to get that cash.

2009 Medicine Hat Stampede & Exhibition

2009 Medicine Hat Stampede & Exhibition

Looking for the 2010 post?

With the 2009 Medicine Hat Stampede & Exhibition well under-way, many are excited for this weekend when they will get the chance to visit the Exhibition portion of the event. The grounds officially opened today at noon. The festivities began with a pancake breakfast served at the Medicine Hat Lodge from 7AM to 10AM this morning where an estimated 2,500 people attended. There’s also another breakfast coming up on Friday if you missed this one – make sure you get the details in the guide supplied below.

Many people (like myself), wait until the weekend to enjoy all the festivals. This year it will be running until the 25th (Saturday). There’s plenty to do including rides, shopping, sightseeing, and don’t forget to spend a couple dollars trying to win overpriced stuffed animals! I’m a sucker for those coin pushing games, I probably spent like 25 dollars last year on them. How could I forget about the food? With a concession and/or food and drink place every couple steps you are sure to get your “eat” on. Some of my favourites include the real lemon aid stand with a side of Elephant Ears! Mmmm…

Already concluded in this years festivities was the Stampede Queen Contest, won this year by Candice Wutch followed up by Stacey Kading (crowned princess), and Cymara Shock. The event was on Saturday, July 18th and you can check out the Medicine Hat News video on the event here. Another one already finished is the annual Visual Arts Show which I sadly didn’t enter this year due to time. Dusty didn’t enter this year either; however, she won 1st place last year. I’ll post the results of that event here when I find them out. Most of the works should still be up though for viewing in the Cypress Centre – don’t quote me on that though.

There’s really too many events and things going on to talk about here though. If you want anymore information, please be sure to check out the official website, or grab yourself a PDF copy of the Stampede Event Guide 2009. Careful with the PDF. There’s some huge complex artwork included in it that brought my computer to a slowed halt. *Update* Alternatively, you may view Medicine Hat Media’s compressed computer-safe version here.

Stampede starts on full stomach – Medicine Hat News by Alex McCuaig

The Snowbirds will be buzzing in Medicine Hat tomorrow, July 23rd. They were supposed to fly through the area during the Stampede Parade but had scheduling conflicts. Look to the skies above the Stampede grounds at about 5PM.

Booster Juice is a popular health-conscious stop stop for many people not just in Medicine Hat, but now all over the world. The chain started up in Edmonton in 1999, and ten years later, there are 174 locations in Canada, 23 in the United States, and (seemingly random) 5 in Saudi Arabi, and one in Dubai, India and The Netherlands.

In Medicine Hat, I am rarely let down by the quality of the fruit smoothies. Although, to be fair, I get the same kind whenever I go there, but I have tried others that other people have gotten, and they were good! The staff there are usually friendly. A few times; however, they have seemed less-than-thrilled to be there, but we all have our ups and downs, but overall, they provide consistent quality of deliciousness.

You can couple the Booster Juice with a wrap for the usual price of a meal from any other restaurant. It is definitely a fresh switch from the greasy fast food places.

Booster Juice in Medicine Hat is located in Suite 108, 3215 Dunmore Road Southeast (Across from KFC on Dunmore Road.)

I have not had a working iPod in over a year and a half, and even when I had one, it was still the first generation iPod Mini series that I bought refurbished off eBay. My burned CD collection goes back to about the year 2000, and most of them are fairly scratched up to an unplayable state due to being shoved into a CD wallet uncaringly. I am tired of skipping music, time for that to change.

I did my research and went to Future Shop. They had exactly what I was looking for – An 8gb Silver Nano. What is more, it was reduced in price by about $10 than everyone else, which was a pretty awesome and unexpected. I was approached by an associate named Marielle, who asked if I needed any help. After knowing what I wanted, she immediately went to get to the key to open the display case. She explained the warranty packages available without being forceful in the least and I was in and out of the store in probably less than 5 minutes.

The incentive for Future Shop associates to be more friendly, forward and helpful is that they make commission on their sales, but even with that in mind, I have never had a negative experience at Future Shop. Being a technologically inclined kinda guy, I usually know what I am looking for, but even so, the associates are pretty much always on the ball with trying to assist you and not being pushy about it.

Grease PosterAs part of the Monarch Theatre Revitalization Project, “Films Al Fresco”, this weekend’s movie is 50’s musical extravaganza Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. The movie will be playing in Kin Coulee Park Band Shell on Saturday, July 18th at 9:00PM.

People are reminded to bring a blanket or a lawn chair as there is no fixed seating, so your probably want to show up a bit earlier to get a good spot. Concessions will consist of pop, popcorn, chips, candy and chocolate bars. Also, in addition to the movie, members of the Medicine Hat Vintage Vehicles Association will have some vintage cars on display – a suiting reference to Grease.

For more information check out The Monarch Theatre Website. Thanks to Ashley Meller for the submission.

Scatterheart via MySpace

Scatterheart via MySpace

Scatterheart are a high-energy rock band coming out of Vancouver and will be playing at The Ottoman Lounge tomorrow night (July 17th) at 10PM. The cover, $5, seems pretty cheap for an act like this. Scatterheart usually performs with a crazy stage presence act which includes dancing and costumes. They were recently touring with Bif Naked but are stopping by Medicine Hat again for this show (and many other cities across Canada). Much of their music reminds me of another Canadian rock band, Robin Black – they share that certain “glam rock” sound. View their new video single, “Beautiful” after the jump.

Location: The Ottoman Lounge
Where: 502 South Railway St. SE.
Cover: $5
When: Friday, July 17th
Start Time: 10PM
