Stores Online is coming back to Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and Calgary to do their yearly Internet Marketing Conference.

Vaughn and I attended the conference last year when they were here and learned a lot about their practices, both in attending, and through the Internet afterward. We also learned that lots of people seem very taken in by the notion that they can make lots of money through the Internet with minimal effort. Do not forget to read the review on our attendance from last year. You can bet with their snappy dress codes, offerings of a free meal and MP3 player and encouraging words exclaiming “Anyone can do it, even you!” that their conference this time will be all about luring people in to get as much money as they can and offering poor website templates just as much as it was last year.

To summarize and make a few points, the last time they were here:

  • The entire crowd, except for Vaughn and me, was pretty much all people above 40 years of age. (An attempt to lure people in who may not have as much experience with eCommerce as newer generations).
  • They offered us a free meal for attending, which was poor at best.
  • They offered us a free MP3 player that ended up having multiple virus’s that installed automatically upon connecting with our computers.
  • They coersed people into buying their product by using powerful phrases like “You have to make decisions fast!” followed by “Some people don’t make any decisions ever in life.” to make people sound like failures if they do not buy in.
  • The website templates they offer look like they are circa 1998 at best.

There is a whole website dedicated to the review of Stores Online and has over 800 comments, which can be found here.

Last year, we had found out that Stores Online had received as Cease and Desist order from the State of Utah. Now upon Googling it, it seems they have received even more.

Vaughn and I might be at the conference again this year, as I received two free tickets to attend it through my place of employment. Oddly enough, to add their their unprofessionalism, they spelled both the first and last name wrong on the tickets I have.

Medicine Hat Media is primarily about showcasing Medicine Hat-related things, but I cannot help wanting to branch out a little bit to do a review on the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa in Moose Jaw.

Earlier this week, Taylor and I visited the spa during a trip to Regina and we were far from being even slightly disappointed. The pool is not overly meant for swimming, but more for relaxing, and is about 5 feet deep at the deepest part and has both indoor and outdoor sections. According to the Temple Garden’s website, the water is drawn up from 4500 feet below the Earth’s surface. The therapeutic benefits from the high concentration of Epsom and Glauber salts, Silicon, Potassium and Magnesium result in soothing effects on the body, joint pain relief, skin hydration, and much more.

The spa is often compared to the mineral pools in Bath, England, which has a rich history of mineral water being used for therapeutic benefits.

As Moose Jaw is just a few hours down the road from Medicine Hat, if anyone is heading out that way, it would do a work of good to stop by Temple Gardens and have a dip. There is also a hotel to stay in, a restaurant in the building and a casino across the street.

The Monarch Theatre is showing the fourth film of their summer series “Films Al Fresco” on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 9:00PM at the Kin Coulee Park Band Shell.

Midsummer Nights Dream

Midsummer Night's Dream

Our movie this evening will be “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (1999) starring Christian Bale, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kevin Kline, Rupert Everett, Stanley Tucci, Calista Flockhart, Anna Friel, Daniel Strathairn, Dominic West, Sophie Marceau, and Sam Rockwell.

This adaptation of Shakespeare’s magical comedy of a love-tangled summer’s evening shimmers with sumptuous cinematography and a truly stellar ensemble cast. Set in the Tuscan countryside, the film follows the romantic misadventures of four lovers who wander into the forest and are magically bewitched by the creatures living there. This cheerful romp is a feast for the senses set to a magnificent classical score and is the perfect entertainment for a languid midsummer’s evening. The movie is rated PG for mild sensuality.

People are reminded to bring a blanket or lawn chairs, as there is no fixed seating available in the park. Come early to get the best spot!

Mucho Burrito

*UPDATE* September 8th – It is now confirmed that Mucho Burrito is open to the public once again.

*UPDATE* Just got an email reading: “I just reviewed your comments on line and do respect and appreciate. We will be reopened in a few short weeks. Looking forward to seeing you there again as a customer.” – Stephen Travers, President – Extreme Brandz Western Canada.

Looks like it is good news for all the fans, we might do an update when it re-opens. Otherwise, below is the original article:

Mucho Burrito has recently closed as of this weekend. A lot like East Side Mario’s closing earlier this month there is a lot of speculation and not a lot of information as to why. I only stopped in there once when it first opened because I was intrigued at the concept. Although I wasn’t completely sold on the variety of sides they had (for example, I was expecting mexi-fries rather than plain tortilla chips with salsa)  the rest of the food was good and I thoroughly enjoyed the homemade-style salsa. I believe I got both a chicken burrito and a beef burrito with the hottest salsa – and it definately was HOT.

Seemingly this place would of got a lot of business being so close to everything in the new developing area, but then again, East Side Mario’s was seemingly doing well as well. So what’s going on? Anybody with more information, feel free to comment or contact us.

TriCube Media Logo

Newly designed logo

Although I’m a tad bit late on this, TriCube Media, local web design and development company has released their new website a long with a new logo and branding effort. TriCube Media has also recently celebrated its fifth year running.

For those of you unaware, TriCube Media is The Medicine Hat New’s web department that branched out as its own company years ago and started servicing their own clients as well. TriCube Media also offers web advertising, company branding and other design related production. TriCube Media currently has offices and representatives in Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Thunder Bay, and Kelowna.

The new website focuses on a clean and simple aesthetic with a bit of “corporate” feel to it (the stark white areas) offset by some colorful and bright backgrounds. The logo follows that same function but mixes “technology-esque” typography with a simple, yet iconic visual logo playing with the idea of illusion for introducing the “three cubes” as showcased in the intro video on the home page.

Some of you may know that I currently work for TriCube Media and was largely responsible for the outcome of the design and development on both the website and the new branding.

Sean has said that he wants to do a post or round-up of all the web design companies within the city, so make sure to stay tuned for that if you are interested in this kind of post. We will probably also feature each company separately at some point – kind of like this post, but more focused on the company itself rather than if it launched a new site.
