The Hive Boutique and Gallery Has Moved!
We will officially opened in The Esplanade on Wednesday December 5th. Our new gallery and boutique is located to the left of the main doors next to the Studio Theatre in the former Gift Shop space.
The studios will remain at the current second street location and will still be open to the public on Saturdays. All art classes will still be held at the classroom in the studios.

Joe Rogan is done his stop in Medicine Hat, but there is another huge name in comedy coming to the Esplanade. Mark your calendars – Wednesday, October 21 at 8pm, Deal or no Deal Host, Howie Mandel will be making his way into the Gas City.
The Canadian comedic icon from Kingston, Ontario has had much success in the last few years as he has stared in many Boston Pizza commercials, appeared many times on Live with Regis and Kelly, hosted Deal or No Deal and Deal or No Deal Canada, as well as his comedy show Howie Do It premiered on NBC and Global TV earlier this year. So this is a show you don’t want to miss.
The cost to see Howie is $56.00 + S/C, GST.
This weekend is heritage day long weekend and as part of the celebrations, The Esplanade is hosting a public one-day festival on Saturday, August 1st from 10AM to 4:30PM. In Alberta, Heritage Day is a civic holiday celebrated on the first Monday in August to increase community awareness of Alberta’s heritage and to celebrate the history of the province.
More than 30 heritage groups and organizations are participating in this year’s festival that will be performing various events scheduled throughout the day including:
- Live Entertainment on the Outdoor Stage
- Historic Walking Tours at 11AM and 2PM
- Doll-making workshop from 11AM – 3PM in the Discovery Centre
- Quilt Display and Vintage Vehicle Display
- Heritage Skits, Readings, Movies and Jiggers in the Studio Theatre
- Free Admission to the Galleries including the exhibit “Playful Revelations Toys: 1880 – 1980”
- Live Chess Demonstrations at the Giant Chess Board
- Local Community Heritage Showcase, and Showcase by local Toy Collectors

I have recently seen an article in the paper that prompted anybody interested in local arts, culture and heritage (I’m looking at you, visual communications students and alumni) to attend a meeting coming up. Every month the Cultural Development program in the city hosts a luncheon where people get together to network and discuss cultural happening and events. Over the years, the attendance has been dwindling since it started 10 years ago. The purpose of the article written in the paper, and even the purpose of me posting here is to maybe bring some old and new faces to the meetings. This meeting, Carol Beatty (Manager of Cultural Development for the City of Medicine Hat) will be talking about a program called “Cultural Capitals of Canada”. The program supports communities that are engaged in the arts and culture through money grants – which would be greatly support local artists as well as bring more art events to the city.
The meeting is to take place on January 29th, 10AM to noon at the Esplanade Studio Theatre. Anybody that will be attending are asked to RSVP to Terry Gill at 403-502-8795 or tergil@medicinehat.ca
