Get Ready to Roll

Vaughn says: As part of Medicine Hat Media’s new partnership with the City of Medicine Hat, we will now be posting their press releases a long with any news or announcements coming from their website in association with Corporate Communications Manager, Jody Lamb. Here’s the first of such posts:

The City of Medicine Hat is launching its new automated waste collection system in September. A 95-gallon waste cart will be delivered to each Medicine Hat resident with an active solid waste account.

โ€œWe are excited to introduce this new and improved system of collecting residential solid waste,โ€ said Ed Jollymore, solid waste utility manager. โ€œThis system, used by many municipalities nationwide, is one of the most advanced in the industry. These carts will provide for a cleaner environment, better looking streets on collection day and a much safer collection method.โ€

The carts have two wheels for easy handling and an attached lid that reduces odours and helps keep out insects and stray animals.

Here are some important tips about the new automated waste collection service:

When the new carts are delivered, look for a special plastic packet attached to the cart that contains important information about the new program. Residents are asked to read all of the enclosed materials.

Start using the new cart right away. Transfer garbage to the automated waste cart. Garbage placed outside of the carts will not be picked up.

Until the end of the 2009 yard waste collection program, residents should continue to place their yard waste in paper yard waste bags or approved 77-litre cans labeled “For Composting”. A new automated yard waste collection program will begin in spring 2010.

If you want to learn more about the new Automated Waste Collection system, the City is hosting a series of open houses for residents to ask questions and see the new carts. Please watch for further details in the media on the dates and locations of these public meetings.

This seems to be what most cities are doing progressively. We have it in Regina, not sure if your place has it or not, Von.

It’s a good thing for most people who just have garbage to go out, and a lot easier, less wasteful, etc. But it kind of sucks for someone who does a lot of renovations or yardwork, like my Dad. The bins are said to (in Regina) fit 8 bags, which it does, but not 8 bigger orange garbage bags, which flew with the old garbage men who picked up garbage before. Garbage.

Very cool for the City of Medicine Hat to also go through Medicine Hat Media, for example, I can guarantee I would not have known ANYTHING about the garbage bins had I not read here and now. ๐Ÿ™‚
