Medicine Hat Media

Through the month of July, nine artists from Canada and the United States are visiting Medicine Hat and working in Medalta’s contemporary ceramics studios.

On July 28 (7:00pm), Medalta’s open house and art reception are taking place, providing an opportunity to meet these artists who have spent the month in our community.

As members of Medicine Hat’s cultural community, you’re encouraged to attend and show these visiting artists how much we appreciate the Arts in Medicine Hat.

Marc Leuthold is one of the artists brought to Medicine Hat by Medalta. Marc’s large sculptures have entered the collections of the Metropolitan and Brooklyn Museums and the Museum of Art and Design. Critic John Perreault has remarked: “One looks and looks for artists who break up history, who bend the descent, who force one to connect the dots in new ways, even turn away from some. Leuthold is one of these.”

Sukjin Choi, who is leading this month’s residency at Medalta, is a Korean artist, educator and writer currently working in Virginia. Her practice ranges from the seemingly effortless production of traditional Onggi jars, to the large scale multimedia installation art.

This is a no-charge, informal event. Complementary food and drinks will be served. For more information, check out our newly-designed website.

Saw the Sign

I’ve been itching to get into this place ever since I saw the signage a week ago. Friday, July 15th was the day I kept hearing they would be opened so I’ve been counting down the days.

Twitter seemed to be the best place for me to find information about this coming restaurant. Local tweets got me a sneak peak of the menu and pointed me towards their website. Both the pictures and prices looked great which added to my already mounting excitement. I’ve been looking forward to a good sushi place in the Hat and this new business held a lot of potential.
Sushi for Lunch!

Well today is the 15th and I’m going for lunch! I had invited a couple people and talked with a few others, even mentioned the possibility of twitter users meeting (#tweepsandgeeks for the initiated), but all my options for company went south. No worries, I’m a big boy so I went alone.

Arrived at the restaurant at noon, was seated and had my first order taken right away. Ten minutes later I had a plate with some nice looking California Rolls and BBQ Eel Rolls.

Wait! Where was my Halibut, Salmon and Snapper Sushi? Apparently it was coming. I took my time, enjoyed the two rolls and was working on the last two pieces when the server returned to ask me if I wanted anything else. I reminded him that I had some coming, which he remembered and said that I would receive it very soon. A few minutes later he returned looking apologetic and informed me that the sushi counter had lost the second half of my order. I reiterated my order and added a spicy tuna and spicy salmon roll to the list. My server promised it all very soon and went to deliver my order to the counter. I wanted to let everybody know about a relatively new Facebook Group, entitled, Medicine Hat Live Indy Music. For a while now, the number of musical venues in the city have been dwindled to a very meager selection, especially for independent, local, and smaller artists. This has triggered in less shows, but also more misinformation about those shows that do happen.

Medicine Hat Live Indy Music aims to solve this problem by offering a place for all local and incoming indie bands to advertise their shows, but also to help them get information on venues and gigs within the city… a problem that Medicine Hat Media also tries to solve once and awhile when a band requests it.

Medicine Hat Live Indy Music Facebook Group

Which also reminds me, as posted in the group, there’s a show going on tonight at the The Legion Hall Games Room at 7PM featuring The Afterbeat w/ The Social Threat, The Weekend Kids, and Old Wives. View the Facebook Event for that here.

Bustin LooseIt’s that time of year, time to DO SOMETHING ABOUT BREAST CANCER – sign up for the 6th Annual Bustin’ Loose Race to End Breast Cancer which will be held October 2, 2011. This is a 3km, 5km & 10km run/walk event in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (prairies/nwt chapter).

Bustin’ Loose began in 2006 with a small committee speculating on whether we could attract 100 participants willing to pay $25 each, enabling the event to donate $2,500 to the cause. Boy, did we under estimate the generosity and enthusiasm of Medicine Hat and area. In the five years this event has been held, we have raised more than a QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation who is working to create a future without breast cancer – funding some of the most relevant breast cancer research programs in the country.

  • Online registration and pledging is open now.
  • We’ll still accept mailed in entries and pledge sheets at package pick up. If you are collecting pledges for the cause, please feel free to use the online option for everyone in your address book as well as carrying a pledge sheet for those friends and family you see in person.
  • 2011 tiered registration fees: Early Bird (Until August 31/2011) – $30.00 / After August 31/2011 – $40.00 / Last Minute (After September 30/2011) – $50.00 /*Committing to collect a minimum of $75.00 in pledges waives your entry fee.*
  • For logistical reasons and to ensure the best possible event – PLEASE ENTER EARLY. While we will continue to welcome all participants right up to race time, there will be a limited number of race packages available.
  • Those who wish to raise pledges are advised to register early even if they plan to continue raising pledges up to race day in order to guarantee their spot in the event.

New This Year

  • Participants can register as a team.
  • There’s a new race category for Kids 12 & under.

Have Lunch With Us

Join the Bustin’ Loose Committee on Saturday, July 9th at Wal-Mart on Strachan Road for the Annual BBQ, 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The food is good, the cost is low and the benefit to the cause is great. **Wal-Mart will be matching $$ raised at the BBQ.**

With your participation in the Bustin’ Loose Race to End Breast Cancer, you are joining a vast and powerful movement of people who share the vision of a future without Breast Cancer.

Hugs,
The Boobsters

There’s a lot of dumb intersections in Medicine Hat. It is my sworn responsibility to bring them to light so I can make more heads shake as a result.

Dumb Intersection #1

My first example in this series is between Superstore and Future Shop. For some reason you have to stop to turn right although nobody else has right of way in that lane since there’s a big cement brick blocking them. So why do I have to stop there? Who am I stopping for?

What were they thinking?
