Medicine Hat Media

Yes, supposedly there is a season, in Medicine Hat, for Beach Volleyball, who knew?

The official Medicine Hat Beach Volleyball League is looking for teams for the 2011 season. The reason runs from June 7th until August 25th and they are looking for teams for Tuesdays, or more importantly, Wednesday nights. The name of the game is co-ed 4’s (2 guys and 2 girls) and the entry fees are $125.00 a team, and that includes the year-end wrap-up. All levels of players are invited to come out and have some in in the sun (this is the sunniest city afterall, right?).

For more information, contact Vern at 403-581-7856 or by email at coedslopitch@hotmail.com. To register a team call Josh at 403-977-7454.

Water levels of the South Saskatchewan River continue to decrease, down by over half a meter since yesterday.

As river waters continue to slowly recede, the City of Medicine Hat advises that in conjunction with advice from RCMP,  no boating will be allowed for the next 24 – 48 hours allowing time for debris to pass downstream.

Water Levels in the South Saskatchewan River

Alberta Environment has upgraded from High Streamflow Advisory to Flood Watch for the South Saskatchewan River including the City of Medicine Hat. As peak flows from the Bow and Oldman Rivers make their way downstream, South Saskatchewan River water levels continue to rise and are expected to peak in the next 24 hours.  These high levels will be sustained for at least a few days.

Minor flooding in parkland areas is expected. Residents are advised to use extreme caution when visiting areas along the river. The rising river water levels and potential for bank erosion or sloughing is a concern, however no homes or businesses are expected to be at risk.

Municipal Works is conducting regular inspections along Harris Street and the areas surrounding the arena. River Road is closed due to the current high flow of the South Saskatchewan River but there is still access to the City Hall and Court House Parkades via Fourth Avenue. There is no access from Maple Ave.

Parkview Drive between Finlay Bridge and the train bridge has one lane open.  Parks & Outdoor Recreation continues to monitor trails and parkland along the river.

The City continues to closely monitor the situation and mitigation plans have been developed for low lying areas along the river that may be impacted.

Residents are advised to use caution around the river and motorists are asked to observe all road signs.

Something to Say

Something to Say

Something to Say is more than just an album title for Emma Cloney. It’s a statement about surviving a painful period of her life. Emma overcame the challenges of a difficult upbringing in foster care – creating a life for herself filled with love, friendship and opportunity. On her first ever western Canadian tour, Emma will share the songs that have helped her find her voice and indeed give her something to say. An honest and talented songwriter, Emma captures the essence of her experiences in music and she’s ready to share it with anyone who is genuinely willing to listen:

Where: Medicine Hat, AB – Private House Concert (contact me at signy@soundstrategymusic.ca)
When: Friday June 3, 2011
Time: 7:00 PM
Special Guests: Dan Frechette

Emma will be joined on her Uphill Both Ways tour by the venerable Dan Frechette – a well-respected Winnipeg folk musician who has graced the stages of some the most prominent folk festivals in North America. Dan, with his innate ability to engross his listeners with stories and melodies, has long been a mentor to Emma.

As true folk raconteurs, both Emma and Dan will offer their audiences a variety of introspective, original songs interwoven with timeless folk classics. From Something to Say, Emma will perform a number of songs, including “Tiny Soldiers” – an ode to her siblings’ ordeal, “The Anthem” – a heartwarming tribute to a friend battling cancer, and “Mustang Dreamer” – a lullaby about watching her daughter grow up too fast.

Emma Cloney has something to say with her new album, and no doubt the new fans she’ll be making on her western Canadian tour will be eager to hear more.

Arborglyphs Poster

May 20, 2011 – June 4, 2011

Opening Reception: May 20, 2011 7:00-10:00pm

Arborglyphs is an attempt to capture the forms of trees both in and out, retold within its very substance.  No two trees are exactly the same, each one is shaped by a myriad of forces at work each day.  My work on these already amazing examples of art, seeks to be just as unique as the pieces that I work upon. ~Hayden Werezak

Hayden’s Bio: Trees I find to be one of the most fascinating things. My fascination with this part of creation inspires my retelling of these growing works of art. I seek to capture trees either carved or etched on wood, slate, and marble.

Born and raised in Calgary, matured in the North Saskatchewan River valley and the Cypress Hills, I currently reside in Medicine Hat, with my wife Aryn.

There are companies in the Medicine Hat area accepting donations for people affected by the fires in Slave Lake.

Canadian Red Cross is taking monetary donations online or in person at the office in Medicine Hat (398 Aberdeen Street SE) or in Brooks (110 – 2nd Avenue W).

However, I have heard Red Cross is only accepting monetary donations. Items can be dropped off at Sanjel (1901 Dirkson Dr NE – Redcliff) or at Genivar (110-1222 Brier Park Rd NW – Medicine Hat).

Please donate, many of us know people who live in Slave Lake and they need our help.

Living With Lions, The Social Threat, The Robertson PrivilegeOn Friday, June 3rd, at 7:30PM (until 11:30PM) three bands will rocking the Kinplex Social Room (2055 21 Ave Se, Medicine Hat, Alberta). I mean, how often do punk shows happen in this city? Not very! So I think it’s important to support these (mostly) local bands.

The Robertson Privilege (local) will be opening for the night. Living with Lions, popular (as far as punk bands go) Vancouver pop-punk will be playing as part of their recent tour in support of their newest album release entitled, “Holy Shit”. They have also played a couple times in Medicine Hat, including once with A Wilhelm Scream. Topping it all off, The Social Threat (local) will also be playing in support of their first full length album release entitled, “Protest Songs”.

The event is all ages and will set you back a measly $10.
