Sent in by Reid Edward Erb of the Sentinel Society

WHO?
My name is Reid Edward Erb. I am 21 years old and have lived in Seven Persons my whole life. In the fall I will be going to university to study physics. If all goes according to plan, I’ll be going into a Master’s of Architecture program once I get my B.Sc.

WHAT?
I am trying to start a secret society devoted to the general improvement of life in south-eastern Alberta. Of course, I’ve already put flyers for it all over town and told everybody I know about it on Facebook and now I’m writing this, so it’s really less of a secret society and more of a “secret” society. It will be called The Sentinel Society

WHY?
Lots of reasons, I guess. Like I said, I’ve lived in the area my whole life, and as much as I love it here, it’s pretty obvious that it could be better in many, many different ways. No doubt, if you’re reading this website, you probably feel the same way. This can be kind of a frustrating place to live! For most of my teen years, nearly all I did was fantasize about moving to a bigger, “better” city (i.e. Regina, Vancouver, Brooklyn), but now, having stuck around for a couple more years, I think that would be kind of a cop-out. As ridiculous and old-fashioned as it might sound, I feel that I’m duty-bound to stay here and do whatever I can to make Medicine Hat and the greater area a better place. I’m hoping to find some people who feel the same way.

HOW?
There’s a lot we can do to work towards a better Alberta! Right now I just want to get a bunch of people together to talk and listen to each other and try to figure out exactly what a “better Alberta” really would be. In the beginning we’ll probably just be trying to support and let people know about the people already working around town (i.e. local charities, local businesses, local artists and musicians). Really, there’s already a lot of great stuff going on around the Hat, and if people just knew about it, and knew they had a community behind them, it would really encourage them to go out and do something themselves! Besides that, I’d like us to organize some events in the community. Basically just try to get people excited about living here!

WHEN?
Our first meeting will be on Sunday, May 15 at 3:00 p.m. I’m guessing it’ll go for about an hour, but it depends on how many people come and how the conversation goes, I guess.

WHERE?
Meet me at the Riverside Memorial Park. I’ll be waiting under the cenotaph. After that we’ll take a bit of a walk around town and talk for a while. Walking has always helped me to think, and I think it’ll make for a more casual atmosphere besides.

Remember: you can make a difference! See you on Sunday!

I’m not really sure what to make of this, but…

I was contacted about a “secret society” to make South-Eastern Alberta a better place. The message was entitled “The Sentinel Society” and was told the first meeting is going to be on Sunday, May 15th, at 3PM at Riverside Memorial Park where attendees will partake in a walk and talk around the park. I was also told to get the word out. I’ve also seen some posters posted around town about this same event. I know posting it here makes it less of a “secret”, but I think this is just weird enough to be interesting to some of our readers.

The Esplanade Art Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of two new exhibitions, Les Manning’s Common/Opposites and the 2011 Group Exhibition of the Hat Art Club and the Medicine Hat Potters Association, on display until June 19. There will be a reception with the artists on May 5 at 7 PM.

Common/Opposites

Fresh, highly coloured and all new clay sculptures by Les Manning, the internationally recognized ceramist based in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Joanne Marion, Esplanade Curator of Art, says “For the past several decades, Les Manning has become internationally known for his elegant clay vessels based on the eroded forms of the Rockies. But in these new sculptures, he vaults way beyond into new territory, with brilliant colours, rich textures and powerful, sometimes playful shapes”.

Hat Art Club and Medicine Hat Potters’ Association 2011 Group Exhibition

A longstanding tradition at the Art Gallery, this exhibition gives a glimpse into the creative talents and imaginative interests of Medicine Hat’s own artists and artisans. Curator Joanne Marion comments that this year, “ the Hat Art Club and Potters’ Association are presenting a surprising array of works, from 21st century digital renderings to clay pots inspired by ancient vessels.”

Thai Orchid Room

$14.95
“Coconut milk curry made with cilantro and spinach, sauteed with fresh mixed vegetables and tofu.”

Green Curry Vegetable (Gaeng Kiaw Wan Pak)

5/5

Okay seriously, this is all-in-all the best food I have ever eaten, I cannot put into words how perfectly creamy, perfectly spicy, and perfectly delicious it is. I’ve never gotten past the thai green curry dish to try anything else there because I simply love it so much. If there’s sauce leftover I will drink it straight. This veggie dish can come with tofu – needless to say, the best tofu I’ve ever had. It’s deep fried tofu, I think a combination of chewy and bready is the best way I can describe it but it certainly doesn’t have the awful texture most tofu has. It comes with jasmine rice, which is probably as good as jasmine rice will ever get. I know Thai Orchid can be pricey, it’s a fancy place, I’ve never had anything bad to say about the staff and service. I don’t know what else to say, it’s simply all kinds of amazing.

I would also like to mention that Thai Orchid Room has been on Medicine Hat Media’s Top Restaurant Picks for the last three years since it started.

Gas City Rollers LogoThere’s another roller derby home game coming up June 4th and the Gas City Roller Derby Association needs sponsors!

There are two kinds of sponsorships, and both of them are a great deal:

1) Business Card Sponsors $50
These people receive 2 tickets to the game (worth $20) and get their scanned business card printed (in black and white) in the game program. Business card ads also get a mention by our announcer.

2) Game Day Sponsors $200
These sponsors receive 4 tickets to the game (worth $40!) and a personally built ad by our talented designer, Amy Gervais at Rapscallion Design. These are 1/4 page ads are nice and flashy! The league will also hang up the businesses banners at the next game and Les Louder, our AMAZING announcer, will mention the business mulitiple times throughout the game. This costs $200, but is definitely worth its weight in gold as 700 people are forced to hear your name or business, over and over! Any game day sponsor are guaranteed that no other competing business will be allowed game day sponsor for that game. So first come first serve!”

Needless to say, myself and others would personally appreciate all the help we can get! If you’re interested, please contact me at du57y@hotmail.com or comment below and I will be around to help set you up or answer any questions you may have.
