If you don’t already know, Midnight Madness is happening tonight from 6PM until well, you guessed it, midnight. As part of the officially kicking off the shopping season, many businesses in the downtown area will be open until midnight, usually offering great deals and sales. You know the drill. There was a couple pages in the Medicine Hat News today announcing specifically what is on sale from most of the downtown vendors, although I am sure once you are down there, you will see the offerings for yourself.
Some of the non-shopping events include tree-lighting in Batus Park at 6PM with choir signing from Medicine Hat High School, free hay rides (6-8PM), and the Monarch will be showing a free children’s movie at 5PM, 6PM, and 7PM. The Medicine Hat Public Library is hosting a book sale until 8:30PM. The Esplanade is offering craft activities in its Discovery Centre from 6 to 8PM. There’s also a ton more going on than even listed here.
Coinciding with the event is the Downtown Medicine Hat Christmas Roving Art Reception which features local art and galleries, taking place in the Hive, Inspire Café and Gallery, and at the Esplanade.
Road closures will be in effect throughout Midnight Madness. Free parking will be available in all city-owned lots, as well as the Transit Terminal Parkade.

The Medicine Hat Cubs and Paradise Valley Par 3 Golf Course are teaming up for a fundraiser on Tuesday, November 29th at Paradise Valley Par 3 Course. The event will run from 5:00pm – 9:00pm at Paradise Valley Par 3 Golf Course. There will be a silent auction as well as a live auction. The live auction will begin at 7:00pm. This is a huge event and is open to the public. The Cubs coaching staff, players and board will all be present for this special evening.

At 7pm, Thursday, November 17th in Room F156 at Medicine Hat College we will be showing “The Healthcare Movie”. There is free admission and everyone is welcome.
This documentary provides the real story of how the health care systems in Canada and the United States evolved to be so completely different, when at one point they were essentially the same. Most people under the age of 50, in both countries, are not aware of the intensity of the political struggle that led to the universal medical care system in Canada. Nor are they aware of the public relations campaigns, still active today, that have been prevalent in the United States since the early 1900’s to dissuade the public from supporting national health care.
Produced by Canadian/American couple Laurie Simons and Terry Sterrenberg, The Healthcare Movie reveals the personal and emotional impact on Canadians who now have access to universal health care because of the heroism of people who took a stand nearly 50 years ago. It also reveals the continuing struggle in the United States between the fear of government intervention and the right to quality health care for all people.
Every day people are dying or going bankrupt due to the ills of the United States system. Who are we in the face of this human tragedy? If you agree that people are more important than profits, then you must watch this film.

The Parks and Outdoor Recreation department has installed signs at a number of leisure trails indicating if it is considered a dog off-leash or on-leash area. The signs will help educate and assist users in understanding when they are entering or exiting these areas, allowing everyone to take the required actions.
Pet owners are reminded that they are always responsible for promptly picking up any waste and ensuring that dogs are under their control at all times, regardless of whether they are on or off-leash.
At this time, signs have been installed at major trail heads indicating that dogs are allowed off-leash. A complete map of off-leash areas can be found on the Parks and Outdoor Recreation section of the City website.

The Esplanade Art Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of two new exhibitions, Z’otz* Collective and The Faculty Show, on display until December 18. There will be a reception with the artists on November 24 at 7 PM, part of the Downtown Artwalk and in conjunction with Midnight Madness.
Z’otz* Collective
“It is said that when bats arrive in a new place, they form clusters. This is a central premise for the members of Z’otz*, a Toronto-based art collective comprised of Nahúm Flores, Erik Jerezano and Ilyana Martínez, three artists who initially united because of a shared heritage — all have Latin American roots… Zotz is the Mayan word for bat, represented in pre-Columbian Maya hieroglyphics as the stylized head of a leaf-nosed bat. Rich in dualities, the bat was worshipped for both its dark and light qualities… For this ancient culture, bats were a symbol of dreaming, intuition and vision — of ideas taking flight.” Independent art curator, Mark Laliberte.
The art of Z’otz* tells stories where hybrid beasts and wild characters inhabit odd and imaginary lands. Z’otz*’s quirky and often outrageous work reflects a combined sense of humour that fills their drawing sessions with endless laughter and fun. This exhibition presents Z’otz*’s recent drawings and ceramics and is curated by Mark Laliberte. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication produced in partnership with the Thames Art Gallery, Chatham, Ontario, and the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery, SK.
On November 23-24 Nahúm, Erik and Ilyana will publicly create a 30 foot-long wall mural in the Esplanade Art Gallery, filled with beasts, fables, and humour.
The Faculty Show
Every two years the art and design instructors of Medicine Hat College’s Visual Communications Program show Medicine Hat their all-new paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, graphic design and projected video. The exhibition gives a snapshot of their current creative interests and the issues underlying their work, and showcases their impressive range of artistic techniques. It’s a big biannual show by artists of today, who teach artists of tomorrow.
The Clay Trade and Framing and Art Centre are very proud to feature two very talented local artists – Zach Quin & Dean Francis during Midnight Madness & the Art Walk.
Midnight Madness is a Downtown Christmas Tradition and the Downtown Art Walk is becoming a staple event for art lovers! These two events will be merged into one!

Fall City Fall is on their Western Canada tour and are stopping in Medicine Hat again, along with Deadbeat (Edmonton/Vancouver hardcore) with local Punk Rock legends (is that too epic?), The Social Threat. The show is all ages and is $10 at the door. According to the Facebook event, “It’s gonna be the best $10 you’ll ever spend”. Who am I to disagree?

After being re-scheduled, the Medicine Hat Photography Club is excited to celebrate the opening of its 5th Annual Exhibition on Saturday, November 19th, 2011. Entitled “Ghosts of Historic Medicine Hat”, the exhibit steps back in time to showcase the vast history of Medicine Hat, captured through the “passionate camera eyes” of club members. Join club members (and ghosts) for the official ‘Show Reception’ between 7-9pm in the beautifully renovated gallery of the Medalta Potteries National Historic Site.
Support from local business makes it possible, once again, to shine the spotlight on Medicine Hat’s local talent. The support of sponsors such as Medalta, Heredity Homes, London Drugs, Tidy Truck Boxliners and Boylan Imaging plays an integral part in bringing this exhibition to the community.
In excess of 40 submissions are expected this year, the theme for which is a result of collaboration between the Medalta Gallery Committee and club members. With a theme as rich in possibilities as Medicine Hat is in history, club members are sure to demonstrate their talents through a diverse collection of works.
Photography Club President, Tye Carnelli, describes the upcoming show “as the culmination of a year-long personal photographic journey unveiling people, places and ideas that for many are now only memories and historical remnants and suggestions… A challenge that each [photographer] has answered eloquently…”
The free exhibit will be on display from 14 November through until 16 December.
The Medicine Hat Photography Club meets the second Thursday of each month at the Cultural Center, beginning at 7pm. They are the voice of photography within the community, exploring the limits of today’s technology and technique, helping understand the jargon and getting down to the essentials of it all, “making photographs.” The group is active through exhibitions, seminars, field trips, photo contests, and meetings that are always informative, exciting, and inspirational.
Some locals, Daniel and Tom, from comtv.ca have started a new show discussing the latest news on Digg and Reddit. There’s also some local story discussion as well.
