Greater Thoughts

Future house... I mean future, business office for Medicine Hat Media.

*EDIT* APRIL FOOLS!

We are very proud to introduce our new structure here at Medicine Hat Media. A paid subscription to view our blog and posts!

We haven’t decided on a final figure right now, but we are thinking about a price of $19.99 per month would be sufficient for the quality posts we present to you on a very consistent basis (really, there’s a very strict release structure here – but it’s so complex you might not be able to grasp it). In the past, our posts have always been error-proof, have impeccable grammar/spelling and are always non-bias. This is why we think we should charge for them. Admit it, you readers have been pretty greedy getting all this content for free over the past couple years, no?

With your money, we are poised to do numerous great things for the site. I for one, am going to go back to school to take journalism instead of graphic or web design – who needs design anyways? Anyways, I’ve prepared a short video for you about some other plans I have when we get your money: THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Things are going down in downtown Medicine Hat, as Amy Gervais of Rapscallion Design discusses on the Rapscallion website.

Some time ago, Medicine Hat Media discovered duplicate, but vastly different designed content for The Monarch, which we blogged about under the title “The Monarch Identity Crisis?“. Soon after we learned that The Monarch Theatre simply was not paying their bills or being thankful for the hundreds of hours of volunteer work that it took to get the theatre up and running.

The duplicate content can be found at http://themonarch.net/, which according to Amy Gervais’ story, was commissioned by the City Centre Development Agency with complete disregard to the design continuity and branding.

Medicine Hat Media, with the help of Ashley Meller, was behind The Monarch Theatre’s revitalization project from the get go. We advertised every show that was in Kin Coulee and even came out to support the events. We advertised movies that were playing and many of us behind Medicine Hat Media have regularly attended their screenings.

Medicine Hat residents and businesses should be supporting each other, not selling each other short. Who cares about a “historical downtown” if it just becomes derelict? Some of us at Medicine Hat Media are now going to withdraw all support from the theatre as we do not want to be a part of such a disappointing situation. If you are also concerned about the happenings and the state of Downtown Medicine Hat, please contact the city council.

Envydia Storefront

Envydia Storefront

Recently, two local stores within the Medicine Hat Mall, Multi-Line Jeans & Gotcha Shoes both closed to focus their inventory in a single store and concept, called “Envydia” (envy – dia). The new clothing store offers jeans, shoes, t-shirts, hoodies/jackets, and tons of handbags all in one store.

Some of the clothing brands offered at Envydia include: Buffalo, Guess, Silver Star, and Arson & Orb. For shoes: LaCoste, Osiris, Kenneth Cole, Steve Madden, and (lots of) Sketchers. For handbags: Guess, Kathy VanZeeland, Chinese Laundry, and Chocolate. The shop also wants to focus on offering brands that are nowhere else in Medicine Hat in the upcoming months. You can learn and see more on their Shop the Hat profile:

Job Fair 2010 addresses the needs of employers in the current economy.

Today’s labour market looks much different than it did a few years ago, and with many employers now having the ability to draw from an unusually large labour pool, employee recruitment and retention has become an entirely new ballgame. With this in mind, the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the Medicine Hat College to bring an emphasis on the needs of employers to their Job Fair for 2010.

Executive Director of the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce, Lisa Kowalchuk, commented that “this is a valuable event for employers looking to recruit in the next year. Not only does it afford them an opportunity to attract quality employees, but also a chance to gain insight and knowledge that will help them effectively select new employees and streamline their recruitment processes.”

Several new components have been added to this year’s event, including a networking breakfast for employers from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, followed by a keynote presentation by Charmaine Hammond, an internationally renowned speaker, author, instructor, and business owner from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM. The focus of Hammond’s presentation will be ‘Igniting Resilience” and will provide insight on how to handle change and uncertainty in today’s economy. THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Awards Honour Those Who Make a Contribution to Our Community

The call is out for nominations for area residents that make this city a great place to live, work and play.

Hatters can send in their nomination forms recognizing individuals for the 2009 Civic Recognition Awards in the following categories: Cultural, Environmental, Humanitarian, Sports/Recreational and Community Inclusion. City Council may also choose to recognize an individual with a Community Service award for making a major contribution in more than one of the above categories.

“The Civic Recognition Awards are an opportunity for the community to show its gratitude and appreciation to residents who are making a difference,” says Jeremy Thompson, Alderman Responsible for Civic Functions. “These awards are meant to acknowledge and recognize leadership, volunteerism, achievements and contributions, whether big or small.” THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Previously posted about on Sean’s article in early September, 2009, was news that the Google Car was spotted around town taking images for Google’s Street View service within the Google Maps application. It’s been awhile, but the day has finally come! Google Street View is now live for all of Medicine Hat (well most of it anyways). Unfortunately due to the age of the current satellite photo of Medicine Hat, all of the new development area in the south of the city was not recorded; however, it is possible that the car recorded the streets and will be added once the actual roads are added. CHAT TV also did a brief report on the subject:

9th Annual Medicine Hat Film Festival

9th Annual Medicine Hat Film Festival

The 9th Annual Medicine Hat Film Festival is a five-day event that will be held from February 24 – 28, 2010. We are pleased to announce that our festival will take place at The Monarch Theatre in downtown Medicine Hat. Our group brings to Medicine Hat some of the best films shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. Often we provide the only opportunity for people to see them on the big screen in the Hat. To complement the great films, we host some of the actors, directors and producers to talk about their films after the screening, followed by a reception at the Cypress Club. We also show a film for families. The Medicine Hat Film Festival has created a rich cultural experience for the people of southern Alberta. Profits from the festival have gone toward building and maintaining the DVD collection at the Medicine Hat Public Library. In addition, we provide funding for the free films shown on a regular basis at the library. Thanks for helping us to continue the Medicine Hat Film Festival.

Two Local Dancers Select to Perform Onstage with Ballet Jörgen Canada This Friday
Company also to lead Master Classes for local dancers on Thursday

Toronto-based dance company Ballet Jörgen Canada will give two local Medicine Hat dancers the opportunity of a lifetime this Friday when they perform Cinderella at the Esplanade.

Local dancers Jaimie Kopeck from the Hanson School of Dance and Kelsey Pocsik from the Medicine Hat College Conservatory of Music and Dance will play the roles of ballroom attendants, dancing alongside 15 professional Ballet Jörgen Canada dancers, including Artistic Director and CEO Bengt Jörgen.

Kopeck and Pocsik were selected from a number of local dance students who were nominated by their instructors to submit a short application to Ballet Jörgen Canada. The application asked: what the dancer loved most about dancing, and what the dancer hoped to gain from sharing the stage with Ballet Jörgen Canada. THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

It has been a while since we have posted about Fritzke’s case. Since the last post, court dates have occurred and new information has been released to the public about his charges of sexual assault and accessing and distributing child pornography.

When I first posted about Fritzke I raised the issue that we didn’t have all the information and that he was not yet proven guilty at the time for either of his charges. It took a while, but his second charge which was the sexual assault was dismissed; however, in my opinion, he is still guilty of the act itself. For those who are interested, there is a sad and detailed description of what he allegedly did in the Medicine Hat News. Yes, the victim gave consent, but at her age (fourteen at the time) combined with his age and stature, it was still wrong, I think. This type of incident probably influenced the legal change of the age of sexual consent from fourteen to sixteen years old (Parliament, 2008); however, the law that was in place at the time of the incident was used instead of the recently changed version of the law. This meant that since the victim was fourteen at the time she legally could have given consent.

We aren’t privy to much information about his first charge (of accessing and distributing child pornography), but I doubt he will be the victor in that case.

The Road Movie Poster - Wikipedia

The Road Movie Poster - Wikipedia

The Road is a novel written by Cormac McCarthy in 2006. It is about a post-apocalyptic journey of a father and his son that spans the course of several months after an event that destroyed almost all life on Earth. The novel won a few awards including the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 2006 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction. The Road was even one of the books chosen to read in Oprah Winfrey’s book club in 2007, and more recently a film adaptation was released for it that starred Viggo Mortensen.

The film release was pushed back two or three times over the course of 2009. Taylor and I, who have both read the book, were eagerly awaiting the release and were crushed each time it was delayed. Finally on November 25, 2009, it was released. Unfortunately, this was only a limited release that was shown in under 400 theatres, and the film only made just under $12 million worldwide in the two months since its release.

The film seems to have skipped Medicine Hat completely and gone to the cheaper theatres, such as the Lethbridge Movie Mill. So make a day trip and go see it, and check out Red Dog Diner along the way.
