Awards Honour Those Who Make a Contribution to Our Community

The call is out for nominations for area residents that make this city a great place to live, work and play.

Hatters can send in their nomination forms recognizing individuals for the 2009 Civic Recognition Awards in the following categories: Cultural, Environmental, Humanitarian, Sports/Recreational and Community Inclusion. City Council may also choose to recognize an individual with a Community Service award for making a major contribution in more than one of the above categories.

“The Civic Recognition Awards are an opportunity for the community to show its gratitude and appreciation to residents who are making a difference,” says Jeremy Thompson, Alderman Responsible for Civic Functions. “These awards are meant to acknowledge and recognize leadership, volunteerism, achievements and contributions, whether big or small.” THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

This is the first post I’ve done of this kind on Medicine Hat Media. Small tweaks and changes over the sites short history were always just done and never commented about. The changes done in this case are more important – or important enough to do a post about.

New Logo

New Logo

Somebody recently asked us for our logo which made us come under the realization that our “logo” was more of just a site header rather than a traditional logo-type that could be used in multiple applications. Which really was bad considering I never do that for any of my projects and I did graduate from the Visual Communication program after all. I was also never satisfied with what I created in the first place – it was just too busy and meaningless for the sites function.

Although I’m traditionally opposed to using the “tipi” imagery since it’s so cliche; I think it speaks more about our site than anything else ever could. I also wanted to add things like “art” and “music” symbolism into the logo but was too busy and maybe was too specific anyways since this site ranges topics a lot more now than it did in the past. So more than anything, this site is about commenting about Medicine Hat – the reference that the speech bubble with the tipi conveys.

I never realized this, but there is a huge community for buying and selling (garage sales) in Medicine Hat. Most of this community exists spread throughout several Facebook groups. Overall, it’s probably not the best system or way to do it; however, considering it’s Facebook, you’re going to get a lot of users, visitors and searches for items you are buying and selling – and most importantly, for FREE. In this post I will give a breakdown of all the Medicine Hat Buy & Sell groups available on Facebook.

I’m going to try and post all of them even if they don’t have much business going on because if anybody is trying to sell something (especially fast), it would be easier to post on every one of these groups to get maximum coverage (granted the item is compliant with the group’s rules). Sorry about the length on this one, there’s so many (redundant) groups!

GARAGE SALE MEDICINE HAT

One of the largest, if not the largest Medicine Hat based groups out there. There is over 6000 members, thousands of items, hundreds of posts. There’s a lot of business going on here. Who needs real garage sales anymore? GARAGE SALE MEDICINE HAT

ANYTHING for sale in Medicine Hat

This group is another big one with close to 1000 photos listed. Plenty of users and discussions going on. As the title suggests, anything is allowed on here. ANYTHING for sale in Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat Moms Swap/Buy

This group is for children and baby items only. It is by far one of the largest groups of this type with almost 2000 members and over 800 items listed. Medicine Hat Moms Swap/Buy

There have been quite a few Medicine Hat community sites popping up lately, Medicine Hat Media being one of the new kids on the block. There is also some more long-running community sites you might not be aware of (but chances are that you are). This post is dedicated to listing all the blog-like, social, or community based Medicine Hat sites that are out there. I have even posted some very obscure ones I found on my hunt.

Mad Hatters

Also known as “medhatblog”, The godfather’s of all alternatives to Medicine Hat Media, originally started in March of 2006 started with a simple concept, as stated by Skeet (one of the three bloggers):

The concept of this blog is to discuss all things pertaining to Medicine Hat in a candid, mainly factual style with open discussion. Something that you do not receive from the mainstream media. No sugar coating here. We will strive to make at least a post a day.

The general theme of the site appears (by the content) to be largely about breaking news and Medicine Hat/Canada politics, obviously in a less mainstream tone/setting. http://www.medhatblog.com/

Medicine Hat Forums

This site (or forum) popped up at about the same time Medicine Hat Media did, but I never found it, even when doing extensive searches until recently when I found it in Google on a random Medicine Hat related search. It’s a Medicine Hat forum, exactly like the name suggests where users can discuss anything relating to Medicine Hat (and other stuff as well). http://www.medhatforums.com/

The Mad “C.A.P.C.S.” (Citizens of Alberta for Positive Community Standards) of Medicine Hat is a unique blog about political and social news about  and relating to the C.A.P.C.S. Originally posted and reported in length on the Mad Hatters blog, spider, the owner of The Mad-Capcs Of Medicine Hat started posting on his own site. There’s plenty of good articles on his site if you don’t know about any of this, but chances are you remember the incident when they ruled that bikinis were pornographic and shouldn’t be allowed in view of children (referring to magazines/books). http://mad-capcs.info/

Now for some of the more obscure ones:
