The Staples Business Depot in Medicine Hat will be hosting a garage/yard sale on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31, and will be open for duration of the regular store hours.

The garage sale will consist primarily of the clearance racks, as well as a little bit of extra stuff, all being moved outdoors for customers to browse while enjoying the hopeful sunshine, and as it is supposed to be in the plus 20’s, sunshine is likely.

Check it out if you are looking for some business supplies.

Business hours:
Saturday: 10AM – 6PM
Sunday: 11AM – 5PM

As some of you may know, Menggu Grill has closed its doors (May 20th, 2009). Word is though, that the building has been sold – to who or what is unclear. To those of you not in the know, it was revealed several months ago that the Mongolian grill cuisine-style restaurant had been shut down by a representative at the Alberta Health Services (then called the Palliser Health Region) after a health inspection was carried out on October 30th, 2009. It was detailed in the report that rodent (mice) droppings were found in several locations including the buffet and food preparation area. The mice were apparently going in through a hole in the wall. There was also several other health problems noted in the report (linked to below).

After that, and a couple Medicine Hat News articles later, the owner, Andy Chen re-opened the restaurant as they had cleaned everything up, made all changes as laid out in the reports and got the go ahead by a follow-up inspection. Since then, it has been operating with a “clean bill of health” with no problems reported. The closing can probably be attributed (mostly) to the incident as many previous patrons presumptively did not return even after it was reported to be cleaned. But really, that is just speculation on my part.

As found in the Medicine Hat News: The Medicine Hat and District Food Bank is holding a garage sale and BBQ this weekend. It will be held on Saturday (May 23rd), from 9AM to 4PM in the food bank parking lot which is at 532 South Railway St. SE. It is a charity-style garage sale which means anybody can bring items to donate; although I think the deadline just ended as I am posting this. There will be both breakfast (coffee and muffin for $1) and lunch (burger, chips and pop for $3) available to visitors.

Also, keep in mind, as posted earlier, The Farmer’s Market will officially open Saturday as well. Looks like I got lots of shopping to do tomorrow!

Since most things we post about on Medicine Hat Media are up and coming events or news articles, I thought a post about things to do in Medicine Hat all year-round would be a nice deviation. Here is a short compilation:

Medicine Hat Family Leisure Centre offers 4 pools, including a wave pool, lane swimming pool, and a deeper end to accommodate the three diving boards and rope swing. The pool also offers a water slide, steam room, adult hot tub, and a warmer pool for babies and younger children.

Shortgrass Library is a spacious library consisting of thousands of books, magazines, audio tapes and CD’s, spread over multiple floors. Also offered are meeting rooms that include room enough to seat people comfortably, Internet connections, projection screens and whiteboards. The library is not just used to sign out books, but also offers TV, VCR/DVD, overhead and slide projectors, and theater LCD projector rentals.

Medicine Hat Menus is a menu website that includes a very large assortment of restaurants in Medicine Hat. Their slogan “Decide before you dine” is nothing short of the truth, as with nearly 30 menu listings and 150+ restaurants listed you do not have to drive around wondering where to go. The website provides users with the address and phone number of any restaurant in its listing, and also provides menus for the restaurants who allow their menu to be posted online with the website, which is very handy when ordering. Coupled with Medicine Hat Menus, MH Restaurants is a sister-site and provides reviews for many restaurants in the city. Check them out to see what people have to say.

The Fast Romantics are an alternative (indie) rock band from Calgary and are most recently playing gigs to promote their self-titled debut album. Their sound kind of reminds me of a mix between Arcade Fire (to reference a popular band) and something kind of like piano-pop with some jazzy bits – with maybe a little mix of  The New Pornographers, Hot Hot Heat, and The Strokes (in some of the synthesized stuff – more notably at the end “Stop Me”). Obviously with all of my references, they are a little hard to categorize, which is nice, because even though the genre isn’t my favourite, their music kept my quite satiated with an interest for they were throwing out on their first release.

It was all quite varied too, there’s a lot of different sounds going on throughout the album – but not exactly all over the place, it all worked together nicely. Very up-beat, very danceable (like lots of brit-pop and indie-rock) and overall a nice mix. I wasn’t shooting my mouth off about the “jazzy” bits either, “Mr. Magoo” features a trumpet, a clarinet, a trombone and a baritone sax (and a bass/guitar/piano/drums if those count too). If you want to get technical, several tracks also feature a viola, violin and cello as well. Keep in mind though, all of the external instruments are being played by external participants, or “special guests” which I list at the bottom of the post.

The album artwork is very nice with masterful and playful illustrations by Dave Barnes and design by Matthew Angus (the vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist of the band). The illustrations take place throughout the cover, the inside flap, the CD, under the CD and even on the back – it’s all great, beautiful, and typeset mostly in Trajan Pro (to ensure the EPICNESS).

CMT Casting Call

Excerpt from her bio posted on the site:

I’ve had a taste of the industry but now I want the full meal deal. I’ve worked in TV for two years now so am very comfortable in front of the camera. I have an outgoing personality, quick on my feet and work well under pressure. I’ve also worked with the country music radio station here in the Hat where I’ve filled in a few times for the morning show. I’ve interviewed numerous country artists and have even made some friends along the way! Have always enjoyed new opportunities and look forward to new challenges.

All the information I received is from a poster I seen and from the website invite. Judging by the name of the show, there will be a lot of “Contrast” going on in the subject matter of the photography. I will keep this post updated with any new information and images if they arrive.

Medicine Hat will be visited on May 27, 2009, by Duane Chapman, or more popularly known as Dog The Bounty Hunter from the television show of the same name that airs on A&E. Dog will be performing publicly about second chances and faith.

Duane Chapman, or Dog for short, is most well known for his A&E television series, but little known otherwise is that he and his wife, Beth, tour the United States and Canada to do public speaking.

This event will be part of Emerge – A city-wide, non-denominational youth event, and will be helped at Central Neighbourhood Hub. And best of all, all the proceeds from the event on May 27 will go to the Eagle’s Nest Ranch (www.enr.ca).

The Beefeater – it pretty much sums itself up in its name and it’s damn proud of it too! It is Medicine Hat’s premier “beef eating” establishment and probably one of the most expensive places you can eat at within the city (save M Grill and DeVine). I maybe should reword that for some people, it is an expensive place to eat if you are going there for a really nice cut of steak, such as a Filet Mignon or sirloin cut – but really you get what you pay for. Otherwise though, there is a standard selection of chicken, seafood, and other beef meals (ribs, burgers) that are reasonably priced and like I said, if you want the nice stuff, you’re going to pay for it. I even noticed a $10 hamburger – I was kind of intrigued since it seemed quite reasonably priced for the type of place. Throw the $1 salad and soup bar into the mix, and it’s actually a pretty good deal if you’re looking for a “fancy-ish” night-out.

Let’s talk about the soup and salad bar. There’s normally two soups available, piping hot and both delicious. Usually they serve a beef soup (such as beef barley) and an other alternative soup (such as french onion). Both are delicious, and the beef variety of soups they serve seem very “home-made” in the sense that it seems like they cooked the beef themselves and thrown it into the mix – this isn’t condensed soup grade beef (like Campbell’s), it is prepared in the kitchen. There’s a huge selection of salads: lettuce, macaroni, 6 different dressings with all the fixings. This is all for $1, unlimited servings, granted you buy an actual meal. Continue reading…
