Medicine Hat Media

Since YouTube is the video God of the Internet, and Vaughn and I are no exception in having accounts to upload videos, I set out to find some prime Medicine Hat YouTube accounts, so here they are:

MHCVideo is my user account I made to upload not only my own videos, but videos from the Video I and II class I was in during college, so there are also a few student videos to view.

Drathy is Vaughn’s user account (one of his internet pseudonyms), mostly used to upload his own videos done in college, as well as gaming videos that synergize with one of his websites, The Gamer’s Journal

Bent Radio is the user account for someone that was in First Year when we were in Third Year. His name is Matt and that is about all I know regarding him. He has a funny video though that we saw at the Video Show in December-ish.

The Newsom Brothers generally do short 10-45 second videos regarding a lot of questionable stuff. Pretty funny if you are not grossed out easily.

Living In The Hat

Living In The Hat

Living In The Hat, an all-purpose website guide for tourists and citizens of Medicine Hat, has been updated. The new website, which looks much like the old layout, designed by Lynn Costea (Website Design & Development head of Memory Lane Computers), has been upgraded to use CSS and Javascript, and is entirely cross-browser compatible (Coded by me, wee!).

Living In The Hat has a huge business directory, including some 2277 items, a menu directory for many popular restaurants in and around town, and a list of things to do. Bored? Simply check out the directory and you can no doubt find something to do.

If you have a business which you would like listed (which may be beneficial, as the site gets some hundreds of viewers a day), navigate to the Contact Us section and send an email with your name and website link, as well as the category or categories your business falls under.

We are finally “newage” ! We have mastered technology and the internets! We made a Medicine Hat Media Facebook group. Look for a spammy-facebook-style invite coming soon!

We were just waiting for a large enough user base before making it, and now it is made, so get more fur than any turtle ever had, be more awesome than any biker mice on Mars, be more noble than a pharaoh when Egyptians ruled the world, quit the quack attacks, and join the group. Too many 1990’s cartoon references?

So, there I was, merging onto the #1 from the overpass by The Medicine Hat College. There was a police officer next to me and as I began to merge he was not slowing down or speeding up to let me go in front or behind him. So I tapped the gas to get in front just as he begins to go into the right lane to go onto 13th. He pulls back and turns his lights on, drag. I was not speeding by enough to warrant a ticket, so what else could it be? He says “You did not signal”, which is like impossible (like as in, one in a billion amount of times I will forget it, since I am a very signal, mirror, shoulder checking type of person – usually). Although in thinking back, I did not see him signaling, but whatever. He checked my signal light, and it was working.

So in the way that funny stories go, he says “You have a nice car”. Oddly enough, I have been pulled over so rarely that it is years in between, and despite having probably the most recognizable car in Alberta/Saskatchewan (probably), it has never been the reason I have been pulled over in the past. He checks my insurance and it turns out that it is out of date. Double drag. But he calls it in and of course it is valid. He seems to be a good guy about it and polite as well, and not a jerk, something most people would contrarily attest to, and not without warrant, because usually cops seem all too happy to write out some tickets as opposed to realizing people are fallibly human. This one time I was going like 7kph over the limit at 11pm on Highway #3, got pulled over, cop asks why I was speeding, I said “I do not have cruise control and sometimes my foot eases on and off the gas ever so slightly”. Apparently that is not a good reason, and 7kph over on the loneliest of roads is a hazard to everyone around me.

He comes back to my car, we talk a bit, and in saying I am from Saskatchewan and only recently changed my plates over to Alberta plates. Insurance is way different there, which he agreed with and even said he liked Saskatchewan’s system better (diss to expensive Alberta insurance), he did not give me a ticket for either offense.

Long story short, most of the time police officers seem to hand out tickets without reason other than “because”, but sometimes it is not entirely a bad experience.

I attended the play Helen on Monday, March 30th and on the whole I enjoyed it.

The cast were well versed in their rolls and acted them out to perfection and the set was well put together. The videography was well done and the sound effects were good.

My only quarrels are these:

The play promotes something that seems like a mix of Hollywood and Spartan culture; however, the only time this became apparent really was near the end of the first act, near the end of the intermission, and the start of the second act. During these events, one of the actresses “up and quits” and is replaced by another. Other situations are the main actress being modeled after Marilyn Monroe, and some mannerisms that reflect and parallel the attitudes and actions of present day culture.

These things aside, it was a fun experience to partake in and a welcome change to that of a movie or watching television. It is a different experience entirely to watch something on screen and know how many times it must have taken someone to get the line just right or act their part just right, then sit down to a play, that takes hours, days, or weeks to get down and present that just right for the audience.

It was a great performance, you, the cast and crew of Helen.

Twitter Twittering Tweets. If you don’t already know somehow, Twitter is a social networking and extremely popular micro-blogging service that enables users to post short messages (or tweets) from their phone, computer, their own website and other devices. There is not a lot of people quite a few people and businesses that post regularly on Twitter that are from Medicine Hat. This post is another one of my famous lists, so here it goes:

*Updated July 26th, 2009*

Medicine Hat Public Library
That’s right, the MHPL uses Twitter to post updates and events happening in the Library. It’s nice to see a place you would think would be fairly old-school using this service.

Medicine Hat College
Now, even the Medicine Hat College has begun to tweet! I’m told they will begin to post event info, advisor updates and more.

Medicine Hat News
Medicine Hat News has started posting links to their top and local stories using the “twitterfeed” web application.

TriCube Media
Local web design and development company has just started using Twitter to post and will post a variety of things including finished/portfolio work, cool gadgets, internet happenings, and more.

From Womb to Cradle
The From Womb to Cradle posts about pregnancy, birth, postpartum and parenting information as well as professional events.

Memory Lane Computers
This local computer store and web development company uses Twitter to post about new stock, technology/computer news and other things.

I originally had a very large list here of individuals in Medicine Hat that post on twitter, but it just got to hard to keep up with. So instead, please take a look at who Medicine Hat Media follows (login required). We try to follow everybody from Medicine Hat, unless they have been inactive for months, then we usually un-follow them to keep our list active; however, we do try to keep all the businesses and organizations followed.

Well that concludes it, I hope you found some twitterers that tweet in Medicine Hat to follow or friend! Okay, I’m sick of saying Twitter related words now. One thing I did notice was the mass majority of Twitter users also have their own website, in most cases it is another blog which 99% of the time contains their Twitter feed in it. Comment if I have missed you!

*Thanks to Sarah and Michelle*

Fresh Flowers & Gifts

Fresh Flowers & Gifts

I don’t really seem like the type to be posting about flowers, and truthfully I really am not the type but I’m doing it anyways because every experience I’ve had with Fresh Flowers has been great. I actually haven’t even bought any flowers from them, but I have stopped in several times for plants and gifts. They always have an ever changing selection of unique and fun house plants which me and my girlfriend like to have around the house. They also have a really good selection of vases, containers, potters, stones, soil – everything you need essentially. In the flower department they have a great selection of exotic things to gander at as well, including flowers that get shipped from Africa to Calgary to Medicine Hat in a day. Grocery store flower shops have nothing on this place.

The staff is really friendly and always extremely accommodating to any question that you may have about flowers, plants or gifts. Our next purchase is definitely going to be “the oldest known plant”, the Cycad which they currently have a selection of right now. You can even get a free vase with your arrangement when you call or email in and say that you saw them on-line (meaning their website). I think it’s a great local shop not to mention their store is really well designed including their business cards and booklets.

My96FM is now sporting a brand new website.

The new website is pretty slick and incorporates an interactive poll to vote on whatever contest is going on, an MP3 and video module for listeners to hear and see the latest band or song that is out, photo albums from My96 events, Facebook links to the On Air Crew, concert links for Southeast Alberta, etc.

The website incorporates a streaming radio application you can run directly from your web browser as well, so you can listen to My96FM from work or home and you can win stuff by listening and rate the music. Simply click around to see what you can find.

Interested in finding out all about the On Air Crew? Check out their biographies. According to The 10 Facts about Grant Buchanan, he has only one testicle. Not only can you see photos of what the voice coming out of your speakers looks like, but you can read about what is in their pants too!

Visual Communications Students gear up for Lost & Found Art Exhibition April 3-12th, 2009 at Medicine Hat College. Every year the graduating students from the Visual Communications Program put on an end-of-the-year exhibition to showcase their work and the skill gained from the previous three years.

Lost & Found is the name of this year’s final exhibition. The students have chosen to have a “green” theme this year and are looking to recycle many materials used during the duration of the exhibition, including all the cardboard and corrugated board, which is used as decoration throughout the show.

“We are getting recycled cardboard and are planning to reuse it afterwards,” said student, Tobie Laliberte. “I just love working with the cardboard, with its natural look and flexibility.”

This year’s show will feature a wide variety of mediums including painting, graphic design, furniture design, illustration, video and photography. Each student is responsible for their own work to put into the show, along with the preparation involved in hosting their exhibition.

“Every student produces their own original work for the show,” explains Laliberte, “along with helping plan, promote and prepare for the event itself. The class is split into different committees and the work is divided amongst themselves.”

The Lost and Found Exhibition will take place April 3rd – 12th in the front corridor at Medicine Hat College. Attendance is free.
