ARTISTS’ EXHIBITION & RECEPTION @ MEDALTA
TUESDAY, MAY 27
7pm – 9pm

Through the month of May, Medalta has been a flurry of creative energy, thanks to a full-house of creative artists in our contemporary artists studios and even our industrial museum!

Terre Crew – a Quebec-based group – is an invitational residency featuring five ceramic artists. Joining them are three Medalta Award recipients (from Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia), another ceramic artist who has been with us from British Columbia since early spring and a Saskatoon-based artist who is creating a 3 meter by 6 meter charcoal drawing inspired by Medalta’s old factory.

Together, this group of 10 artists represents 6 provinces – incredible diversity all brought together in Medicine Hat.

With such a diverse group wrapping up their time in Medicine Hat, we’re giving them a suitably interesting send-off by hosting an exhibition and public reception in our dome-shaped beehive kilns and old factory.

This is a great opportunity to meet excellent, creative artists from across Canada. Many of whom are on their first visit to Medicine Hat. They’re an engaged group who have thoroughly enjoyed their time in Medicine Hat (and riding those fantastic bikes so many of you donated through Medicine Hat’s trails).

Help us give them a proper farewell and enjoy yourselves in the most unique setting in Southern Alberta. Join us for this free evening celebrating Canadian artists.

Medalta LogoWith another busy summer of artists putting in long hours in Medalta’s contemporary artists’ studios (and putting miles on those bikes so many of you generously donated to us), we want to make sure every artist who comes to Medalta has a comfortable place to sleep in Medicine Hat.

Although these artists do work very long hours in our studios, they actually do sleep. And although one of our studio couches make do as a spot for a quick nap, they really prefer a bed.

We keep a list of Medalta supporters who are willing to take in a visiting artist during their stay. Over time, that list has slowly shrunk as peoples’ lives have evolved.

Now, we want to add that list. If you have a spare room in your home and are interested in hosting a visiting artist, we would love to hear from you. If you decide to be a potential host, we will ask you how long you’re comfortable having one of these artists in your home (we have artists who come anywhere between one month and one year). We will make sure that whoever you welcome into your home is a good match for you.

These artists pay to stay with you and you set the rate. Given that these people have taken time away from their families, careers and home, we do suggest that you set a rate in line with the current market while making it something that both you and the artist are both comfortable with. Most of our current hosts charge between $400 & $500 per month for a room (while some simply ask the artist to pay what they’re able to pay). Again, it’s up to you.

They generally take care of their own meals (lots of meals are eaten at our studios with the other artists), laundry (we have laundry at Medalta), transportation, etc. THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

First Annual Medalta International Cup Show

From August 23 to September 28, Medalta is hosting its first annual International Cup Show in the Yuill Family Gallery. The exhibition features 150 pieces of artwork from 10 different countries. Saskatoon-based ceramic artist and international blogger Carole Epp juried the exhibition, which received over 450 submissions. The pieces, which all showcase the artists’ interpretation of a cup, showcase a wide range of styles and personalities.

The goal of the exhibition, according to Medalta Curator Jenna Stanton, is to “expose Medicine Hat to a wide range of artistic styles and show the creative possibilities that exist in an everyday object, like a cup.” The exhibition features both functional and non-functional pieces which take the idea of a cup to the extreme. According to Stanton, “we’re excited for this exhibition to push people’s perceptions of what is possible in ceramic art.”

Medalta has partnered with Medicine Hat College to emphasize the community-building aspect of the International Cup Show by offering one-month artist residencies & accommodation as well as a purchase prize for exceptional works of art from the show.

The Medicine Hat College Purchase Prize will be juried by Carole Epp, with those pieces becoming an identified part of the Friends of Medalta Society public collection. The Medicine Hat College has also offered one month’s accommodation to the artist selected to participate in Medalta’s one-month artists’ residency in the summer of 2014.

According to Medicine Hat College Director Advancement Mark Keller, “Medicine Hat College recognizes the positive impact of arts in our community. We’re pleased to welcome artists to the community and look forward to another success for Medalta.”

The Opening Reception for the First Annual International Cup Show is Friday, September 6 at 7:00pm in Medalta’s Yuill Family Gallery. The online sales gallery will be open at the same time. There is no charge for the opening reception and everyone is encouraged to attend and/or purchase a piece of work online.

A newspaper’s front page has long been a ubiquitous part of many peoples’ lives. It is often the first point of reference when big news breaks anywhere in the world. The headlines call to us and even though the images are often iconic, few can name the source they originally came from.

How can it be that one of the most important communication tools of the past 500 years can be taken for granted?

In this exhibition, Medalta and the Medicine Hat News have partnered to exhibit important front pages over the past one hundred years.

The thought is that by elevating the Front Page from its regular place on your dining room table to the walls of a gallery, it will encourage the viewer to re-visit the idea of how information is transmitted.

Aaron is currently working with experimental, highly translucent soft paste porcelain that matures at an extremely low temperature. His interest in this new material, for which there are few historical precedents, grows out of a concern for the environment and reducing the carbon footprint of his practice.

At the same time, he has become interested in contemporary communications technologies – QR Codes in particular. He is experimenting with the merging of ceramic art with these new forms of communication.

This is Aaron’s latest Big Idea. We hope you enjoy it.

The City of Medicine Hat Cultural Development Department and the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre are proud to join in the celebration for Alberta Arts Days from September 30 to October 2, 2011.

“With an array of cultural activities happening in every corner of Medicine Hat over the weekend, the community displays vibrancy like no other in Alberta. This is an occasion for everybody in Medicine Hat to take pride in who we are and what culturally shapes our identity,” says Tobie Laliberte, Marketing/Promotions for the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre (Cultural Development Department).

The weekend will kick off Friday evening with the Downtown Medicine Hat Artwalk putting together a roving art reception called pARTy!. Molly Johnson will be performing in the Esplanade Theatre at 8 PM.

On Saturday October 1, Medalta in the Historic Clay District, an official host site for Alberta Arts Days, will hold a Raku Festival from 10 AM to 4 PM. Twenty five years ago, I bet we were all watching Top Gun and wondering if Oprah was ever going to make it. Sports fans watched the Mets win the World Series (do you remember Bill Buckner?) and millions of Americans lined up for Hands Across America.

Al Capone’s vault was opened (spoiler alert … nothing was in it), Pixar opened its now-famous animation studios and we saw Halley’s Comet. And closer to home, the Friends of Medalta Society was formed on the heels of Medalta gaining National Historic Site status.

2011 is a pretty big year for us. We managed to rescue Medalta from the wrecking ball and have turned it into a museum, contemporary ceramic artists’ centre and production pottery studio.

It’s our twenty-fifth anniversary this year (and ninety nine years since the building was built).

This month’s newsletter also features news from a lot of Medicine Hat’s cultural community, including The Hive, The Esplanade, The Monarch Theatre, Inspire Gallery, Studio and (soon) Cafe and Medicine Hat’s folk music scene.

We’re always looking for content so if you know of something we should be including, email Quentin the info and we’ll do our best to include it.

Artist's Co-op CoordinatorFull job posting: http://medalta.org/coop_coor.html

I would like to take this post to talk about Medalta for a second. I’m sure you all know about Medalta Potteries and if you don’t, all the information you will ever need to know is located on their site. This post is about their newsletters which are released monthly-ish and managed by a local celebrity of sorts, Quentin Randall – I only say that because I see his name at least once a day in some blog post, a Twitter post, an email, a city-based project, or in this case in the Medalta newsletters.

The Medalta newsletters, “Medalta, in the Historic Clay District”, are more than just news of the Medalta Potteries (there is plenty of that too though), they are about events happening around the city, art exposure, books, performances and more. It’s always a little bit different too which is nice. It becomes a very nice local resource, perhaps one that you haven’t thought of coming from a pottery museum.

Not convinced by words alone? Take a peek at the October newsletter. Subscribe to the newsletter here.
