Hamilton’s The Reason is coming through Medicine Hat with Denmark buzz band, Thee Attacks. They will be performing at Medicine Hat College on Monday, November 25th.

The Reason

The Reason is an indie rock group from Hamilton, Ontario. Their last LP Fools was awarded both the Rock Album of the Year and People’s Choice Album of the Year at the 2010 Hamilton Music Awards. The single “The Longest Highway Home” hit the Top 5 on the Billboard Canadian Rock charts. The band is currently writing and recording a follow-up to their most recent EP Hollow Tree.

Thee Attacks

Thee Attacks are a rock band hailing from Denmark that play high energy, garage/retro/mod-style rock. In 2008, after starring in a national Budweiser advertising campaign that aired during the Super Bowl and the 2008 Beijing Olympics, The Manvils contributed eight songs to the Space Network thriller Never Cry Werewolf and provided the musical score for the CBC Humanity award-winning documentary Moscow Freestyle. Amidst all of this, the band set out on a major North American tour that brought them to New York, L.A. and Toronto three times in a mere six months.

2009 saw the hot streak continue for The Manvils. After being handpicked by Bif Naked to support her national tour, they graced the cover of Vancouver’s #1 entertainment magazine, The Georgia Straight, and rocked the 2009 Virgin Festival main stage crowd, supporting Sonic Youth, Jarvis Cocker, Metric and Ben Harper.

A great independent music line-up going on Tuesday night, October 20th as presented by the Young & Pretty Folk Music Association. The cover will be $5 and will start at 9PM. It’s been a while since I’ve done a post for a Young & Pretty event, mostly because of my lack of knowledge on the great indie scene in this town, but also, there’s generally 1-3 shows happening a week so it’s hard to keep up on sometimes. The best source to get this information is on the Young & Pretty Folk Music Association MySpace page or by joining their Facebook group. This show features Young Galaxy, an indie-rock band from Montreal, Bend Sinister an extremely varied folkish-rockish type ensemble from Vancouver and lastly, Mordichia, a local band of experimental music fame.

The Fast Romantics are an alternative (indie) rock band from Calgary and are most recently playing gigs to promote their self-titled debut album. Their sound kind of reminds me of a mix between Arcade Fire (to reference a popular band) and something kind of like piano-pop with some jazzy bits – with maybe a little mix of  The New Pornographers, Hot Hot Heat, and The Strokes (in some of the synthesized stuff – more notably at the end “Stop Me”). Obviously with all of my references, they are a little hard to categorize, which is nice, because even though the genre isn’t my favourite, their music kept my quite satiated with an interest for they were throwing out on their first release.

It was all quite varied too, there’s a lot of different sounds going on throughout the album – but not exactly all over the place, it all worked together nicely. Very up-beat, very danceable (like lots of brit-pop and indie-rock) and overall a nice mix. I wasn’t shooting my mouth off about the “jazzy” bits either, “Mr. Magoo” features a trumpet, a clarinet, a trombone and a baritone sax (and a bass/guitar/piano/drums if those count too). If you want to get technical, several tracks also feature a viola, violin and cello as well. Keep in mind though, all of the external instruments are being played by external participants, or “special guests” which I list at the bottom of the post.

The album artwork is very nice with masterful and playful illustrations by Dave Barnes and design by Matthew Angus (the vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist of the band). The illustrations take place throughout the cover, the inside flap, the CD, under the CD and even on the back – it’s all great, beautiful, and typeset mostly in Trajan Pro (to ensure the EPICNESS).
