Elliott BROODThursday, June 28th
Schooners Pub (in the Medicine Hat Legion). Doors open at 8:00pm.

Tickets $15 in advance (available at Madhatter Roastery downtown) $20 at the door. Come rock out. Local talent to open.

Marking a 3rd street effort milestone, Elliott BROOD is the reason we began booking and promoting independent Canadian artists in Medicine Hat.

The Alt Rock/Country trio, often described as “Death Country” is touring following the release of their latest album, “Days Into Years,” and we’re overjoyed to have them.

Collective Soul is coming to Medicine Hat on October 20, 2009 and they will be rocking up the Cypress Centre at the Stampede Grounds.

I have not listened to Collective Soul in years years, but still listen to a few songs every now and then when they come on the radio. I used to listen to them all the time way back in the day when I used to play Starcraft and Alt-Tab to chat on ICQ (around 1998 or 1999), even before I met Vaughn and got into Punk Rock from his musical influence.

Collective Soul will no doubt be playing some of their bigger hits at the show, including “Run”, which is probably their most recognizable song.

Tickets are $42.50 and available at the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede website: http://tickets.mhstampede.com.

New Years Eve live recording of “Run”:

Sean Ashby is a Toronto-based (formerly of Vancouver, formerly of Hamilton) singer, songwriter, composer, producer , guitarist , programmer and engineer. He has won several awards including: two 4 times platinum U.S. records and one diamond record in Canada for work with Sarah McLachlan.

He will be playing Thursday, August 13th, 2009 at 9:30PM at The Ottoman Lounge which is located at 502 South Railway St. SE.

Don’t miss this show everyone! Thanks for supporting the live music.

The Fast Romantics are an alternative (indie) rock band from Calgary and are most recently playing gigs to promote their self-titled debut album. Their sound kind of reminds me of a mix between Arcade Fire (to reference a popular band) and something kind of like piano-pop with some jazzy bits – with maybe a little mix of  The New Pornographers, Hot Hot Heat, and The Strokes (in some of the synthesized stuff – more notably at the end “Stop Me”). Obviously with all of my references, they are a little hard to categorize, which is nice, because even though the genre isn’t my favourite, their music kept my quite satiated with an interest for they were throwing out on their first release.

It was all quite varied too, there’s a lot of different sounds going on throughout the album – but not exactly all over the place, it all worked together nicely. Very up-beat, very danceable (like lots of brit-pop and indie-rock) and overall a nice mix. I wasn’t shooting my mouth off about the “jazzy” bits either, “Mr. Magoo” features a trumpet, a clarinet, a trombone and a baritone sax (and a bass/guitar/piano/drums if those count too). If you want to get technical, several tracks also feature a viola, violin and cello as well. Keep in mind though, all of the external instruments are being played by external participants, or “special guests” which I list at the bottom of the post.

The album artwork is very nice with masterful and playful illustrations by Dave Barnes and design by Matthew Angus (the vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist of the band). The illustrations take place throughout the cover, the inside flap, the CD, under the CD and even on the back – it’s all great, beautiful, and typeset mostly in Trajan Pro (to ensure the EPICNESS).

There’s a lot going on tonight apparently. If you’re not already going to The Big “D” or Lord of the Dance then you also can choose to enjoy a little reggea/alternative rock as supplied by Once Just, a band coming out of Calgary. Their sound is kind of like a mix between Korn and Skindred.

Cypress Center
Monday, November 10th, 2008
Doors open at 8:00PM

Two Canadian bands will be rockin’ the Cypress Center on November 10 here in the hat. Both of these bands I haven’t listened to in quite some time. I have fond memories of feeling “hardcore” listening to probably Finger Eleven’s hardest song called “Drag You Down” whilst still in high-school.

The first time I heard of The Dudes was actually when I was downloading some music by The Strokes and they just happened to have a couple songs hidden in the archive file… for some reason. Anyways, I realized why they were in there, because they kind of sound similar in ways, in that indie-rock-sounding-kind-of-way that was popular years ago – however I still say they are more similar to bands like Modest Mouse, which is not a bad thing at all.
