This morning when I left the house to drive to work, I noticed a Peace Officer SUV stopped in the middle of the street. As I walked to my car that was parked along the island of the cul-de-sac, they backed up about 3 houses worth then took off. This in itself did not seem overly weird to me, so I continued on to work.

Immediately when I pulled onto Southview Drive from the street I live off of, near the Southview Community School, I saw a police car driving down the street, and further down Southview towards Dunmore Road, I saw another police SUV (not the same Peace Officer) going alleyways. As I came to the Southview/Dunmore intersection, I saw one more police car waiting for the lights to continue on and join the fray.

Four police officers on their own might seem coincidental, but when they are driving up and down alleys in a seemingly coordinated manner, it seems like there must have been something going on.

“Healthy Decisions in a Fast-Paced World”
Lunch Session to Help Steer ‘Hatters to Healthier Lifestyles

In continuing to bring issues from Medicine Hat’s Vital Signs to the forefront, the Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta unveiled today the second session in a series of Vital Munches.

“Healthy Decisions in a Fast Paced World” will be the topic of discussion at the free lunchtime seminar, set to take place February 8, 2010 from 12 – 1:30 PM in the Honor Currie Room in the Medicine Hat Public Library. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch, and the foundation will provide beverages.

Panel members will include dietitian, food columnist and best-selling cookbook author (“The Big Cook”) Joanne Smith, and Ed Stiles, Certified Exercise Physiologist and owner/operator of Peak Performance Fitness Services.

“We are thrilled that Ed and Joanne will be joining us for this important discussion,” said Jennifer Thompson, Community Impact Coordinator. “Ed is very well known in the community for his insight into personal fitness and is dedicated to helping people improve their lives through exercise. Joanne’s experience teaching families to eat healthier through her work, column and cookbook will benefit all those in attendance as well. Ed and Joanne are both well respected and we are grateful that they are taking time from their busy schedules to help create a healthier community.” THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Sadly, as rumored this morning by radio stations, Devine Grill has closed, but why? They seemed to be busy the few times Taylor and I had been there, and everyone seemed to praise their cullinary art.

Recently, as heard around town, Devine had struck lunch specials from their menu. I found this surprising, since most restaurants maintain lunch menus to help drive business. Regardless, that would not stop me from going there during lunch hours. The thing I will miss most is having a good freshly prepared meal outside on their patio.

The rumor going around is that the Medicine Hat News arrived at City Hall this morning to interview the Business Development Officer regarding the closing. You can bet there will be something on the news tonight and on the radio tomorrow about it.

The Medicine Hat SPCA is seeking volunteers to join their 2010 Board of Directors. Our annual general meeting will be held Feb. 17, 2010, membership is required prior to board nominations. A strong legal, financial HR, business or marketing background would be an asset, no previous board experience is required. The organization is managing to operate successfully in spite of some ongoing financial restraints. We are looking for forward thinkers wanting to help plan and move the organization forward into the future. For for information please contact Audrey Becker at contact@medhatspca.ca or phone (403)526-7722

If you do not want to be on their board of directors or do not qualify, why not just volunteer some time and take a pooch for a walk? This could be particularly beneficial if you live somewhere that does not allow animals or if you do not have anyone to go jogging with.

Check out the SPCA’s website to see how you can help.

The Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta today announced the opening of the application process for spring 2010 grants.

Applications will be accepted from today until the close of business on March 15, 2009. Qualified donees or organizations must hold a charitable registration number from the Canada Revenue Agency. The Community Foundation awards grants for charitable activities in the arts, education, social services, the environment, health, culture and recreation, or any project that will maintain or improve the quality of life in Southeastern Alberta.

In December the Community Foundation unveiled over $36,000 in community grants, and the organization hopes to provide much of the same benefit to area non-profits this spring.

“We are thrilled to once again give grants to worthy organizations in Southeastern Alberta,” said executive director Mike Christie. “While we have several priorities at the Community Foundation, giving grants to kick-start community projects is one of the most rewarding.” THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Contributor, Mike has made me aware of a news segment broadcasted on CHAT TV that was just recently aired on January 14th. Just weeks after the Medicine Hat city council voted down funding options that would of seen construction begin on an event centre in our city, the community of Brooks begins to celebrate the opening of their new arena. While it’s easy to compare both of our cities because we are so close, that’s kind of a blind-sided thing to do. Medicine Hat is a different city than Brooks is, especially in the finance/money spending department, but being so close… it’s hard not to see this as ironic or sad in some way. Well… that is if you are for the events centre.

Monopoly CanadaMedicine Hat has made it onto a list of 65 Canadian cities that will vie for a spot on a new Monopoly Canada board game to be launched on Canada Day. Hasbro, the makers of Monopoly, are launching a nationwide vote for Canada’s 22 favourite cities to be included on the new game board in celebration of Hasbro’s 75th anniversary.

Beginning Monday at midnight and running to Feb. 7, Monopoly fans can visit www.monopolyvote.ca to vote for their favourite Canadian cities. Medicine Hat is one of 65 cities pre-selected for the top 20 city vote, based on population and a representation of all provinces.

Justin Quinton, from the “NoAudience” project has just released his second Podcast (give or take a couple days). To my knowledge, this is the only Podcast coming out Medicine Hat which is quite cool. It’s great to see the start of new forms of media emerge in Medicine Hat. If you missed the first podcast and introduction, please check it out and if you missed the first post explaining the NoAudience project, please view that as well. When I first listened to the Podcast almost a month ago, I was blown away with the quality of production as I was expecting a lot worse being the first Podcast I have ever heard coming out of Medicine Hat.

Justin even gave a shout out to Medicine Hat Media on the second podcast. Sorry for the delay on posting this one; give me a break,  i’m currently on my holidays.
