Medicine Hat Media, being the forerunner of bringing scam alerts to public attention online, especially with our coverage of StoresOnline in 2008 and 2009 have another one to alert you about. Saying that, I would also like to state that this could very well NOT be a scam, but who has ever heard of anything good coming out of these workshops? Well, besides that cheap digital camera that they give you that will break after a month. Fortunately for us, CHAT TV has helped us with this one and released their video to YouTube.

Official Dean Graziosi Insider’s Edge Website

The gullibility of a certain older lady in the video is quite disturbing; however, this is the type of people that they thrive off of. I can’t speak to the content of the workshop or program as I did not attend the event; however, a simple Google search reveals many complaints against The Insider’s Edge, Dean Graziosi (he has a lot, but mostly his own trying to pad Google with his own sites/products), and their parent company, “Investor Education”. Here’s a couple of those:

The City of Medicine Hat is in the process of reviewing parking in the downtown area to determine if additional parking space is required.

As part of this review, a team will be conducting surveys throughout the downtown. The survey is scheduled to commence June 2 and is expected to take two weeks to complete.

Interviewers wearing safety vests and name tags will approach patrons and ask them to answer a few questions regarding parking.

All residents are encouraged to answer this short survey on-line.

The City of Medicine Hat appreciates the public’s support and participation in this important survey.

The popular Facebook group for Hatters to buy, sell and trade locally has another home on 4U2CTV.

The Brooks multimedia station (4U2CTV.com AKA Brooks TV) which is known for showcasing videos with local content has created separate stations for several Alberta communities like Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. The Medicine Hat site was constructed with a classifieds section and has also embedded the Garage Sale Medicine Hat map.

Yours truly, the creator of the facebook group GARAGE SALE MEDICINE HAT, has been working with the creator of 4U2CTV.com the past few months to come up with the website.

The motivation behind the particular design of this website is to offer a better tool for those that enjoy GARAGE SALE MEDICINE HAT. Facebook worked well for the group because everyone seems to be on Facebook regularly and the group was only a click away. However, administrating a group of this kind is labour intensive in the confines of the platform and basically the group has outgrowned the clunky design of Facebook. Suffice to say, Facebook was never made for this type of activity.

On the 4U2CTV site, ads are categorized which is a feature you don’t have in Facebook. Another plus, ads self delete after a week and a half. There is no need to go back and remove old ads.

The Facebook group will remain, this new site is just another option that is 100% free.

Community Consultations Set for 2010 Vital Signs: Community Foundation asks for public input.

‘Hatters will have two chances next week to add their input to the 2010 Medicine Hat’s Vital Signs report. The Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta is hosting two separate public consultations in order for citizens to express what they would like to see in this year’s report.

The first consultation, aimed at the business community, will take place in the Chamber of Commerce’s board room on Tuesday, May 25 from 12 – 1 PM. The second consultation is of a general nature and will take place on Thursday, May 27 from 12 – 1 PM in REDI Enterprises’s board room.

Community consultations play an important role in the kick-off to the Vital Signs process.

“These consultations allow us to hear what citizens believe are the strengths and weaknesses of Medicine Hat,” said Mike Christie, executive director of the Community Foundation. “It also helps us create a better report because we hear what issues are important to ‘Hatters.” THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Daniel Cloutier is a 21 year old from Winnipeg that has a dream: Don’t Stop Believing The dream is to raise as much money as possible to beat Cancer, and to do this, he is rollerblading across Canada. Daniel is due to pass through Medicine Hat on the evening of Sunday, May 16th.

In tow are Daniel’s girlfriend, Chantal Courcelles and his friend, Eric Foidart who accompanying him on the way and accepting donations wherever possible. To donate, check out Daniel’s website www.dontstopbelieving.ca

Here is what Daniel has to say:

My name is Daniel Cloutier, I’m 21 years old, a 3rd year Business Student living in Winnipeg, Manitoba with a big goal in mind. I am rollerblading across Canada to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. I was inspired to rollerblade across Canada after seeing hockey player, Sheldon Kennedy do it. I’ve chosen this specific cause after losing my Uncle to cancer in 2007 and my Grandmother recently battled kidney cancer. This journey will help raise a lot of money to beat this horrifying disease.

I started this rollerblading adventure May 1st, 2010 from Vancouver, British Columbia and planning on ending it in July in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I am accompanied by my girlfriend, Chantal Courcelles and my good friend, Eric Foidart during this trek. They will be following me with a truck and trailer and collecting the donations for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Our vision for this trek across Canada is to bring everyone together with a common mission of conquering this terrible disease that sadly affects millions of people every day. When everyone gets together, the possibilities are endless! The cures will be achieved!

Gratefully with your help, we will be that much closer to making a difference and curing this disease.

I look forward to hearing from you and thank you so much for your time and attention.

Sincerely,

Daniel Cloutier

Arrival in Medicine Hat

I’d like to thank the kind citizens of Medicine Hat for making my short visit a special one. I toured around discovering the local scenery – The Teepee, the local mailbox (a little too closely), and even the Medicine Hat College’s Square Show. Sigh, breathing the fresh Alberta air was so relaxing. Daisies dancing gently in the wind as the breeze softly whistled through the branches of a nearby tree. It was beautiful and relaxing and everyone was so welcoming and friendly.  I love traveling to new places.  Do you think I should continue traveling?  Visit my website and let me know by voting – www.ivanthegnome.com.

The Hive Artist's Hub LogoA very interesting and unique project recently launched here in Medicine Hat is “The Hive”, or formally known as “The Hive Artist’s Hub”. The Canadian Badlands, Historic Clay District and Rural Alberta’s Development Fund have partnered to create an “artist incubator” in downtown Medicine Hat. The renovated downtown loft provides studio space for artists who need a space to focus on work. In addition to this, artists will have access to business development (for themselves) and a retailing store space.

I’m a little tardy to posting this on Medicine Hat Media, but I assume all the artists in the area already know about the project and have already submitted their application for space; however, if you have not, the deadline is May 7th, 2010 to get them in. There is five initial spots up for grabs.

To apply, contact Tobie Laliberte at 403.504.5371, tobie@hivehub.ca, visit the application section on the website, or drop by at 569 2nd Street SE in Medicine Hat, Alberta (kind of beside The Monarch).

I am surprised to see this type of project actually realized within Medicine Hat, and I applaud everybody involved. This will be a great promotional opportunity on several levels for all the artists to be involved.

As described in a recent Medicine Hat News article, distracted drivers in Alberta could now be fined under a new law introduced by the Alberta Government on April 21, 2010, if their driving is deemed to be suffering from distraction.

The fine, which is set at $172, applies to anyone who is talking on a handheld cellphone (a headset may be passable), texting, reading, writing, grooming, etc. The aim is to lower vehicle collision rates and force people to drive safer. Many people will jump at the chance to agree that talking and driving is not safe. But what about talking to passengers, especially with all the hand gestures usually involved in talking to someone face to face? I have even seen people driving wearing Alain Mikli Shutter Shades, and if there is one thing Kanye West has taught me, it is that you do not look cool wearing Shutter Shades, plus your vision is probably reduced by like 25%. Who needs to see more than 25% of the road anyway?

Previously the only fine the Police could doll out was a hefty $402 for “Driving without due care and attention” plus 6 demerit points to your driving record. With a law being passed to enforce driving without distractions, we can either expect the average driver to be safer, or for people to hide their phones between their legs while texting. Now all we have to worry about are those police officers who often use their laptops while driving. Wait a minute! Are laptops not an even bigger distraction than cellphones and texting? Not to mention the fact that those police radios are kind of like cellphones too. Maybe they should pull over or come to a complete stop while using them, or maybe police officers are infallible, and unlike the rest of us they can safely do two things at once.

There’s been a lot of controversy over the whole Monarch debacle, and there hasn’t been a lot of public information on the CCDA’s side of things until now. Our friends at CHAT TV who periodically release great content from their news broadcasts on to YouTube share their latest clip entitled “Downtown Dispute”. This video shows a bit of the CCDA’s position, where they contend, that the design expenses were never approved, so it was never officially in their budget (which was getting more and more thin as the renovations progressed). Their position is that “nobody knew about” the $9000 bill which was submitted at the end of the year by Amy of Rapscallion, and not a monthly invoice they would have thought to receive for any expenses. It seems a bit more fair on the CCDA’s perspective now.

Something still strikes me as odd though, considering they were using the posters, promotional materials, the logo and the website. Although it wasn’t stated in the video, it would be assumed, that of all these projects being done by Rapscallion was considered, by the board, to be volunteer work? It seems like a lot of work to be considered volunteering; was it never discussed? Months and months of separate pieces of work was never brought up and the payment for said pieces? I think some of the story is still missing here. Furthermore, they are still using some of the original content including the logo; albeit, an extracted/copied version. Who owns the intellectual property rights? If there was no invoice or payment, was there any contractual release of property rights?
