The Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta are accepting grant applications for spring 2011 grants.

Applications will be accepted until the close of business on March 15, 2011. Organizations must hold a charitable registration number from the Canada Revenue Agency or be a qualified donee under the terms of the Income Tax Act. The Community Foundation awards grants for charitable activities in the arts, education, social services, the environment, health, culture, recreation or any project that will maintain or improve the quality of life in Southeastern Alberta.

During 2010 the Community Foundation was able to make 133 charitable grants to 74 different organizations for a total of $211,802.00.

“We are pleased to give grants to qualified organization in Southeastern Alberta,” said executive director Mike Christie.

Community Foundation donations are held forever and carefully invested, with the principal of the donation never being spent. The interest earned on donations is then used to give grants to community charities.

The grants committee of the Community Foundation will review the spring grant applications and notify recipients in May. Grants will then be handed out to the chosen organizations at the annual Founder’s Day Picnic in June 2011.

To assist in the grant application process, the Community Foundation will host a “Grant Application Workshop” for all interested parties, Wednesday February 9th, 2011 at 12:00pm at the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce.

The Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta has a large service area. Qualified organizations are welcome to apply for funds. Funding addresses critical operating expenses

Funding is available to non-profit organizations that have been struggling with sustainably issues.

MSI Operating Grants for non-profit organizations are available through the Alberta Government Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) and administered by the City of Medicine Hat. The grants are meant to address growth-related challenges and enhance the long-term sustainability of Medicine Hat.

“We are looking to assist successful organizations that serve a need and are now struggling to keep up with growth demands,” says Leslie Jerry, community inclusion coordinator. “Typically, funders focus on new programs. This MSI funding is unusual in that it provides the opportunity to address critical operational funding.”

Applications and further details are available on the City of Medicine Hat website www.medicinehat.ca. Deadline to apply is Thursday, January 27, 2011

Registered non-profit organizations can apply for MSI grants to cover qualifying operating expenses including salaries, wages, rent, utilities, small equipment, operating supplies and maintenance. An Application Information Session will be held in Council Chambers from noon until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2011.

Organizations that meet an identified need in Medicine Hat can apply for up to $25,000 to use within the calendar year. A total of $104,000 is available in 2010. Selection criteria includes measurable objectives, proof of accountability and non-profit status.

MSI Operating Grants are supported by the Alberta Government Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) and the City of Medicine Hat.

The Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta today announced the opening of the application process for spring 2010 grants.

Applications will be accepted from today until the close of business on March 15, 2009. Qualified donees or organizations must hold a charitable registration number from the Canada Revenue Agency. The Community Foundation awards grants for charitable activities in the arts, education, social services, the environment, health, culture and recreation, or any project that will maintain or improve the quality of life in Southeastern Alberta.

In December the Community Foundation unveiled over $36,000 in community grants, and the organization hopes to provide much of the same benefit to area non-profits this spring.

“We are thrilled to once again give grants to worthy organizations in Southeastern Alberta,” said executive director Mike Christie. “While we have several priorities at the Community Foundation, giving grants to kick-start community projects is one of the most rewarding.” THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

After one year in which no community grants were dispersed, the Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta today rewarded nine local charitable organizations with a total of $36,536 in funds.

Because of a harsh financial climate and decreased investment portfolio performance, the Community Foundation was unable to continue its normal grant cycles after the spring of 2008. With a slowly improving portfolio, however, the foundation was able to recommence its grant program again this September.

“It was very exciting to once again start the application process this fall,” said Community Foundation executive director Mike Christie. “Although we had been working as hard as ever in the office, we missed our twice-yearly community grants cycles. Giving out community grants is one of the best parts of our job, and the board and staff didn’t feel as fulfilled without it.”

Dozens of applications were received by the foundation in mid-September; a volunteer-based grants committee then met several times to decide which groups would receive the funds.

“It was hard this year in particular because we all knew what a tough time these charities are facing,” said Christie. “There were many worthwhile applications. Our volunteers worked diligently to find the right groups to award with funds, and we hope that Southeast Alberta will be an even better place with the funds going to these groups.” THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

With only two weeks left before its grant application deadline, the Community Foundation of Medicine Hat & Southeastern Alberta is reminding area non-profit groups to submit their applications as soon as possible.

Earlier this summer the foundation announced it was resuming its community grants process after a year-long break. Applications are being accepted until the close of business on September 15, 2009.

“We are happy to see grant applications received in our office daily,” said executive director Mike Christie. “Several organizations have worked very hard on their applications and we look forward to presenting them all to our grants committee.”

The organization strives to make grants that will better the life of area residents, and Christie says they are particularly looking forward to assisting community groups during this economic downturn.
