Although many Hatters probably are already aware of the service, I just stumbled on the Medicine Hat Police Service’s website section entitled “Caught On Camera“.

The service in most cases offers numerous screen shots of a suspect, or sometimes a video of them in action, their offense, the date and location of the offense, and the Police generally ask for anyone who has any information or can identify any of the offenders to call in at 403-529-8400; otherwise, call in to Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

This service is pretty great for local businesses and in helping the community, because no one wants to be robbed or victimized.

The Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta today launched Vital Kids, an extension of its Vital Signs program.

Vital Kids is aimed at teaching children more about the community they live in. This is done by discussing some of the more kid-friendly facts featured in Medicine Hat’s Vital Signs. Issues covered will include voting, neighbourhood populations, Canada Day activities, volunteering, youth employment rates and much more.

The first Vital Kids presentation was held in the grade three/four classroom at St. Mary’s School today, led by Jennifer Thompson, community impact coordinator at the Community Foundation.

“Our Vital Kids presentations will be a conversation with the students,” said Thompson. “We will cover fun facts about Medicine Hat and talk about what they can do to make their community an even better place to live.”

The Community Foundation has produced Vital Signs for three years, joining more than a dozen Community Foundations across the country. Medicine Hat’s Vital Signs has inspired programs such as Vital Activities and Vital Munch; Thompson hopes that Vital Kids will touch a new generation. THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

BizPaL, a new online permit and licence research service network has launched on the City of Medicine Hat website thanks to the Business Support Office and Planning, Building and Development department.

BizPaL is an innovative and interactive service that incorporates the business permit and licence process for entrepreneurs, governments, and third party business service providers. BizPaL provides business clients, especially new business startups, with the information they need to meet all permit and licence requirements quickly and efficiently. BizPaL is available on-line whenever the client needs to seek information.

“BizpaL is a terrific, easy to use on-line tool that provides entrepreneurs and business owners with the permit and licence information for Medicine Hat that they need to grow or start their business,” says Keith Crush, business development officer. “This is part of an ongoing effort to ensure our community supports and encourages business development.”

A partnership between all levels of government – federal, provincial and municipal – BizPaL provides one stop easy access to all permit and licence requirements. “It is a great tool to cut down on the research and paperwork associated with prior licence and permit requirements,” says Crush.

For additional information on the BizPal network, please visit the City of Medicine Hat website at www.medicinehat.ca or http://bizpal.alberta.ca/

On Thanksgiving Day, CHAT TV will be airing a half hour Documentary about a pair of Medicine Hat residents who have established a company to drill water wells in Africa.

It is a beautifully pieced Documentary by Jeremy Hunka that will give you many reasons to be thankful. I urge everyone to see this documentary.

‘Too Dry For Tears’ is the title and it airs Monday Oct 12th. (Noon, 5:30PM, 6:30 & 11:00PM)

Facebook Connector is no longer installed on Medicine hat Media due to speed/loading issues as well as poor coding/design implementation of the WordPress plugin.

I could go on a long Facebook rant like I did a couple days ago about Twitter, but I’m pretty sure everybody knows what Facebook is, and most likely also know how they spend too much time on it. What you need to know is this: Facebook Connector has been implemented so that you can log in to Medicine Hat Media to comment through your Facebook login. What this means is that you can comment on the site and it will link back to your Facebook profile as well as take your current Facebook profile picture. This will only work if your privacy settings allow. For example, if you don’t have a public profile or public picture, they won’t be displayed – it doesn’t break any of your rules. You will also be able to do some other things like write status updates directly based on your comments or posts on the site. I’m sure I am missing other functions as well – I also seen a cool little Facebook overlay pop up on the site when I logged in via Facebook through Medicine Hat Media.

To log in using Facebook, click the “Facebook” login button above the comment submit section of every post. Normally though, it should log you in automatically if you are already logged into Facebook. Facebook and Medicine Hat Media now go together like bread and butter, and a hamburger between them, and maybe some BBQ sauce.

The Medicine Hat Vital Signs 2009 project has been completed and packaged up for the public to see.

As Vaughn explained in the previous Vital Signs article, Medicine Hat Vital Signs is a community “check up” that measures and assigns ratings in the community. The information was taken in by completing a survey on the Vital Signs website.

The final 28 page booklet, which was designed by Hide Away Studios Inc., includes statistical information population, education, police and security services, environment, plus much more, including an honourable mention to Medicine Hat Media on Page 23.

It was a year exactly since CHAT TV went from CBC to an E! Canada station when Canwest Media decided to shut down the E! counterpart in Canada, leaving all the stations in limbo. CHAT TV, as well as its sister stations in Kamloops and Prince George, BC, switched over to an affiliation with Citytv. This brought forth a change the schedule yet again. Instead of news at noon, 5, 6, & 11 weekdays, it is now at noon, 5:30, 6:30, & 11.

With the switchover, it brings in new Citytv programming, such as CityLine, The Bonnie Hunt Show, Rachel Ray, the Jay Leno Show, Murdoch Mysteries, 30 Rock, and the Office. So you can be sure to have your “Mom” shows, but not so much “guy” shows. Hmm, what’s the matter with that picture? So, welcome in your hit comedy shows as well.

You may be asking what happened to the other E! stations/affiliates in Canada, well here’s what happened:

  • CHEK Victoria was schedule to close, but instead was sold to a group of private investors and continues to run independently.
  • CHBC Kelowna became Global Okanagan.
  • CHCA Red Deer closed on August 31st after 52 years of being on air as RDTV, CH, and E!
  • CHCH Hamilton was sold to Channel Zero and currently carries a news and movies format.
  • CJNT Montreal was sold to Channel Zero and continues its multicultural format with addition of foreign movies and music videos.

Goodbye E! Welcome to the new Citytv era! Another entry for the Jim Pattison Broadcast History Books!

If you missed what this was all about, a small group of people took to the streets for 48 hours to raise awareness for homelessness in Medicine Hat. The event, aptly named, “Hatters Without Homes”  took place on the weekend with around 25 participants. The participants used shelters and food services as provided by the city which has come with a lot of criticism including a couple comments a long the lines of, “They were out their wasting all the much needed food and resources.”; however, it’s been cleared up that they re-supplied all that they took as well raised money for charity while they were out there.
