Newly known to me this week is the Medicine Hat Fan Roundup event taking place this weekend on Saturday, June 23rd from 10am-10pm at the Medicine Hat College (F Wing). The entrance fee is $5, but kids under 11 get in free! So what exactly is the Medicine Hat Fan Roundup? Well, it’s a bunch of different things focusing on everything from anime, to board games, to retro gaming and more. It’s a pretty interesting/surprising mix of geek culture taking place in Medicine Hat. Best of all? Sushi Hat is catering for the event! From the Facebook page:

Medicine Hat’s own Fan Convention. A one day Expo in Medicine Hat for Fans of Fantasy, Sci-fi, Comics, Video Games, RPG, Card Games, Steampunk, Anime and Manga !

Activities include:

  • Video games from PONG to modern consoles.
  • Board games from Risk to obscure German titles.
  • Anime from the newest releases this year.
  • Indie films from studios and the Net.
  • Special events like contests and panels with professionals in art and writing.

Guests:
John Johnstone V, the writer/director of the indie Canadian film DungeonCrawl, will be around to talk about making movies and the experience of DungeonCrawl!

Empire Gaming has been open for about a week now. We’ve checked it out and it’s a pretty nice set up. Each XBOX360 comes with its own television. It didn’t take long for us to notice that you probably won’t be playing beside the friends you came with, unless you’re on a team with them, or don’t care that they are cheating by looking at where you are. Anyway, here’s a listing of tournaments scheduled for September 12th, 2009:

Rock Band 2

9:00am – 12:00pm

Gears of War 2

12:00pm – 5:00pm

Halo 3
12:00pm – 5:00pm
Halo Wars Limited Edition XBOX game up for grabs and bragging rights. No fees to enter, only regular hourly rates apply.

Empire Gaming LogoPreviously posted about, Empire Gaming, is now officially open. It will be open all day and until around 9PM tonight (or later). I won’t re-iterate what was said in the previous post, but for those of you that don’t know, or forgot (it was quite awhile ago), Empire Gaming is a new business in Medicine Hat dedicated to video gaming. There’s a ton of high-end PCs, lots of Xbox360’s, and a Wii on projection all for you and your friends enjoyment. Dusty and I went there today and played some Call of Duty 4 on the Xbox360 and joined in with some others who were playing.

More information will come over time about tournaments, events, and other special things going on. Today, ROCK 105.3 is on location there and they are serving BBQ hamburgers outside sponsored by Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Medicine Hat. If you go in and play for an hour you also get a chance to enter a contest for a free mini-laptop or a Playstation 3. Go down there and check it out!

Empire Gaming is located at 104-7 Strachan Bay SE (across the street from the Walmart, kinda).

How many times have you been sitting around a board game alone, just wishing you had some friends who were into that kind of thing to come over and play? O.K., this has probably never happened to any of you, but this exact thing used to happen to Medicine Hat resident Tyler McLaughlin about twice a week, until he got fed up and started a club. That was six years ago…

Tyler’s club has 20+ members and a catalog of around 1000 different games. They meet every Thursday night at 6:30 pm until they are done (around midnight) at the Volunteer Center, 211 – 4th St SE. There is a one dollar nightly fee, with a tournament held with prizes about every three months or so.

“As well as being really fun, board gaming can impart regular players with new skills or help to improve old ones all while you get to make new friends and be out of the house. We tend to focus on games which can improve processing speed, spatial reasoning, leadership and coaching abilities, cognitive abilities, communication skills and a stronger sense of self confidence. We also tend to talk about probability and other math now and again, as that’s all part of being good at the games.” says Tyler. THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »
