Edo Japan

“Delight in this flavourful combination of fresh cut carrots, broccoli flowerets, chopped mushrooms and cabbage – grilled to perfection!”

Fresh Grilled Vegetables

4/5

While looking for fast food options I tried out Edo, where they have fresh grilled veggies on their menu, which I have with yakisoba. It’s a combination of “freshly sliced carrots, broccoli florets, chopped mushrooms, and shredded cabbage steamed and grilled”, on your choice of rice or noodles with teriyaki sauce (if you’d like). I liked it before, not having meat hardly made a difference to me now. They also serve avocado and cucumber sushi, which was one of my saving graces for sushi cravings since I avoid seafood in my diet.

Engineering, project management firms selected for unique project

City Council passed a motion regarding the selection of vendors for engineering and project management of the City’s concentrating solar thermal energy project at their Council meeting on Monday, June 20.

The decisions mark one of the first steps in the project, which will produce energy mined from the sun’s rays, converted into steam, and then connected to the City’s existing electrical generation system. It will produce approximately one megawatt of electricity. The project is the first of its kind in Canada.

International company Worley Parsons was selected as the engineering firm. Cascade Management of Saskatoon was chosen to handle project management.

“There are many steps to go to bring this project to fruition, however, these firms are experienced and specialized, making us confident they will guide the City successfully through the process,” said Gerry Labas, Chief Operating Officer of the City of Medicine Hat’s Energy Division.

Worley Parsons has experience handling these types of initiatives, including working with the Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center in Florida, which is one of the few worldwide that connects the technology with a gas-fired power plant, as will be the case in Medicine Hat.

Project management firm Cascade Management has experience with the City of Medicine Hat’s electrical generation system as they oversaw the purchase and installation of the LM6000 electric generators to the City’s power plant. The firm also assisted with funding applications and project plans for the City’s solar thermal initiative during the research and approval phases.

The concentrating solar thermal project was announced in November 2010 as a partnership between the City of Medicine Hat, the Government of Alberta and Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC). Each partner contributed $3 million to the $9 million project.

As most of you know, the Canada Post is now in “lockout” mode, which is kind of like a reverse-strike; essentially, the employers are stopping the employees from working. Previously, Canada Post workers were on a “rotating strike” which meant packages and mail were still getting through on a semi-regular schedule, save for one day where each province would take their turn at striking.

In a lockout, no mail is delivered. But wait! Hope is not lost. According to a couple posts on the Medicine Hat News Facebook Page, one employee, Donny Taylor, has stated that he, and a couple others from the local offices of Canada Post are still delivering. This is both good and bad news. The good news is that cheques are still being delivered in this volunteer-mode; however, the bad news is this only effects cheques. That means you are still out of luck for packages and other pieces of mail.

The last Canada Post strike was in 1997 and lasted two weeks. Although this isn’t technically a strike anymore, I personally hope it still only lasts a couple weeks before some headway is made. Others though, are indifferent of the situation. In the age of email, online banking, online payments/bills, digital services – traditional mail is becoming less relevant. Unfortunately, I am still waiting for video games to be shipped, and I need my fix!

Hatlife.ca LogoHatlife.ca is a relatively new, community-based event site for Medicine Hat. They also recently changed the design and layout of their site. It features people, places, and things to do in Medicine Hat, on a day-to-day basis. The site features the most comprehensive calendar available in Medicine Hat for events and other happenings. You are bound to find something to do every day or every night.

On top the events calendar, there is also a community component to the site which allows people to register, recommend, create events/places/people, follow, and comment. Another interesting feature is “Hatitudes” which is an anonymous (well, to the public anyways) board of complaints or recognition for anything to do with or in our city. Kind of like a web version of Ticked Off or Tickled Pink.

Today a whole new group of artists have arrived in Medicine Hat and will be spending a month in Medalta’s studios.

For the next two weeks, we are hosting artists’ talks so you get a chance to meet the group and learn where their inspiration comes from. They’re always fantastic events and after that talks, everyone gets a chance to have a drink  & something to eat while speaking with the artists.

We hope to be able to show these visiting artists how much Medicine Hat appreciates the Arts.

Spectrum LogoAlthough it’s been pretty depressing in terms of weather lately, all signs point to some nice sunshine tomorrow for the annual downtown Spectrum event (but ofcourse, with some chance of rain). Officially the Spectrum starts today and lasts until Sunday, but most of the events are taking place tomorrow, except for all the great deals that is. As usual, there’s going to be tons of deals from all the local businesses downtown; however, this year they are opening up the event to take over first and third street as well. Besides the shops, there’s also the events such as, music, magic, fashion, comedy and more.

In typical fashion, the Medicine Hat News has released a Spectrum supplement which details all the different events happening this year: Spectrum 2011 Guide – It truly is a good informational resource for Spectrum.

Join Together Alberta Town Hall Meeting – June 7

Join Together Alberta

The Join Together Alberta campaign was conceived and launched jointly by a number of Alberta unions and union groups in cooperation with various community and advocacy groups.

All of the participating organizations share the belief strong public services are important to all Albertans. They also share a belief that Alberta is a very wealthy place and that we can afford them. The only thing that’s standing in the way of maintaining strong public services in Alberta is lack of political will. We can afford to maintain and strengthen public services by fixing Alberta’s broken system for revenue generation.

Come to the Medicine Hat town hall meeting and join the discussion! Help create the Alberta you want.
When: 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM, Tuesday June 7, 2011
Where: Medicine Hat Stampede Grounds, Fireside Room (in the Cypress Centre)

For more information contact:

Bill Grady, Volunteer Director with the 2011 Southern Alberta Summer Games Host Committee says, “We all know our community shines when it comes to pulling together to make these types of events happen. We’ll need between 400 and 500 volunteers and I’m confident our community will come through for us and show the rest of Southern Alberta what it means to be a ‘Medicine-Hatter’.”

Those interested in volunteering are asked to sign up online at www.southernalbertasummergames.com or visit the games office at the Medicine Hat Arena (155 Ash Avenue SE) to fill out a volunteer form.

The Southern Alberta Summer Games began in 1970 as a grass-roots sport and culture festival with an emphasis on participation, fair play and fun for the whole family. Each year, 13 teams or “regions” from across southern Alberta bring more than two thousand participants to a different southern Alberta host community – making in the largest consecutively-running festival of its kind in Western Canada. The City of Medicine Hat, in partnership with Cypress County and the Town of Redcliff, is thrilled to be the host for the 42nd Annual Southern Alberta Summer Games July 6-9,
