The Medalta International Artists in Residence program can add the University of Montana to its list of partners. In 2011, both organizations agreed on a partnership which would enable promising ceramic arts students to gain valuable real-world experience in a residency setting. In January 2012, 8 students participating in the program will benefit from this partnership through working in Medalta’s Shaw International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics.

According to Artistic Director Aaron Nelson, the students’ time at Medalta provides professional and international experience. “Hosting residencies here at Medalta gives these students a way to apply the knowledge and skills they learn at University,” explains Nelson. “One of the primary benefits of a hands-on approach such as this puts theory into practice and further prepares students for life after university.”

“Forming partnerships with post-secondary institutions has always been one of our goals,” explains Barry Finkelman, Executive Director of the Historic Clay District. “The benefit of having talented, creative people in Medicine Hat is enormous – both from an economic development and community-building perspective.”

Everyone is invited to meet this group of visiting artists during a public open house on Friday, January 27, from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. Open Houses provide a unique opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at an artist’s studio and see artwork in all stages of completion. Work made during the month will be on display. The Open House is free to the public.

The Historic Clay District is a 150-acre National Historic Site in Medicine Hat, Alberta which encompasses a number of historically significant clay factory sites. One of the centerpieces of the Historic Clay District is the Medalta Potteries National Historic Site, which features an industrial history museum, major industrial archaeological excavation, contemporary ceramic artists-in-residence program and working pottery. It is one of eight major attractors within the Canadian Badlands and receives significant support from the Government of Canada, Government of Alberta and City of Medicine Hat.

AT THE MONARCH THEATRE, MEDICINE HAT
January 16 and 17, 2012

Travel to exotic lands and remote cultures! Be up close and personal with adrenaline-packed action sports! The Best of the Banff Mountain Film Festival returns to Medicine Hat on Monday and Tuesday, January 16 and 17, 2012 at 7.00 pm sharp. Tickets are available at the Information Desk at Medicine Hat Public Library or through the students in the Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership program at Medicine Hat College. Tickets are also available at Valhalla Pure Outfitters, at 1667 Dunmore Road SE. The evenings take place at the Monarch Theatre in downtown Medicine Hat.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. If not sold out, there will be a limited number at the door at $12 each evening.

Two evenings of films, with different line ups, will be shown. Spoil, filmed on the remote west coast of BC, chronicles the attempt to photograph the elusive and legendary spirit bear in an area threatened by a proposed pipeline, currently in the news. Cold captures the interwoven roles of pain, fear and doubt as two climbers experience winter and the dangers of avalanches on Gasherbrum 11 in the Karakorum range of the Himalayas. In On The Trail of Genghis Khan, Australian Tim Cope, his band of horses and his dog travel overland 10,000 km from Mongolia to Hungary, following in the footsteps of the legendary warrior and nomad Genghis Khan. In addition films on tightrope walking across incredible abysses, kayaking, climbing in the desert and glaciers, as well as a nine year girl wonder climber, skiing and paddling will be featured.

For the past 36 years on the first weekend in November, people have gathered in Banff to see films and videos which celebrate the best in mountain culture, extreme sports and the environment. Once the festival has concluded, a selection of these films goes on the road across Canada and the United States and around the world.

The students in the Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership program at the College are an integral part of the evenings as they generously volunteer their time to help with the presentation of the Best of the Banff Mountain Film Festival in Medicine Hat.

Two local companies, Criterion Catalysts and Technologies and Cancarb have generously sponsored the Film Festival, thus allowing for the proceeds of ticket sales to go towards library projects.

For more information, please call Hilary Munro at 403-502-8533 or email hilmun@medicinehat.ca.

Alternative Water FuturesFriday, December 9
7:00 – 9:00 pm

Room S154, Medicine Hat College
299 College Drive South East

In 2008, the Alberta government announced it would review and update the water allocation system in the province, a system that is proving increasingly incapable of dealing with the challenges of today’s emerging water crisis. Policy recommendations released by the government in late 2009 suggest it is moving toward a province-wide deregulated market for water in the province, turning critical decisions about who will be able to access water over to the market.

With long-delayed public consultations promised in the new year by Premier Redford, it’s more important than ever for Albertans to explore and discuss alternatives to water markets that will build a water allocation system on the principles of equity, fairness, sustainability and respect for treaty obligations.

Join the Our Water Is Not For Sale network and Jeremy Schmidt, author of the soon-to-be released report Alternative Water Futures in Alberta, for an exploration of the challenges for water in Alberta, why markets aren’t the answer to Alberta’s water challenges and what alternative allocation systems that protect our water commons for ecosystems, our communities and future generations could look like.

Presented by the Our Water Is Not For Sale network, with support from the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Council of Canadians, Parkland Institute, Public Interest Alberta and Sierra Club Prairie THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Aaron is currently working with experimental, highly translucent soft paste porcelain that matures at an extremely low temperature. His interest in this new material, for which there are few historical precedents, grows out of a concern for the environment and reducing the carbon footprint of his practice.

At the same time, he has become interested in contemporary communications technologies – QR Codes in particular. He is experimenting with the merging of ceramic art with these new forms of communication.

This is Aaron’s latest Big Idea. We hope you enjoy it.

Medicine Hat’s Volunteer Centre will likely close it’s doors after Christmas. The organization that has been a staple in our community since 1991 was overlooked for FCSS funding and can no longer operate. Program funding was a decision made by our current city council. The same council that has recently allotted funds to Slave Lake, Haiti and the Horn of Africa. Irregardless of the fact that our generosity extends beyond our borders, times are tough and we cannot fund a twenty year old organization providing services to the local community. If you are wondering why, here are some people you can ask:

Mayor Normand Boucher mayor@medicinehat.ca
Alderman Graham Kelly gldarops@shaw.ca
Alderman Wayne Craven waycra@medicinehat.ca
Alderman Les Pearson lespea@medicinehat.ca
Alderman Phil Turnbull phitur@medicinehat.ca
Alderman Ted Clugston tedclu@medicinehat.ca
Alderman Jeremy Thompson jertho@medicinehat.ca
Alderman John Hamill johham@medicinehat.ca

A water main break occurred at 2 a.m.at Ajax Coulee near Kipling Street. The water main break affected several areas of the city including the southwest, southeast and northwest.

Department crews worked through the night to isolate the break and are working to resolve the issue and restore full water pressure. Residents in the southeast area of the city may experience low water pressure or temporary discolouration. This discolouration poses no health concerns. Customers may also temporarily experience air in their water lines.

Environmental Utilities apologizes for any inconvenience and thanks the community for their patience during this period.
