A great independent music line-up going on Tuesday night, October 20th as presented by the Young & Pretty Folk Music Association. The cover will be $5 and will start at 9PM. It’s been a while since I’ve done a post for a Young & Pretty event, mostly because of my lack of knowledge on the great indie scene in this town, but also, there’s generally 1-3 shows happening a week so it’s hard to keep up on sometimes. The best source to get this information is on the Young & Pretty Folk Music Association MySpace page or by joining their Facebook group. This show features Young Galaxy, an indie-rock band from Montreal, Bend Sinister an extremely varied folkish-rockish type ensemble from Vancouver and lastly, Mordichia, a local band of experimental music fame.

There’s a Young and Pretty Folk Music Association show going on tonight at CAPE School which means it’s one of those rare all-ages show. Thomas DiNinno, creator of the Young and Pretty Folk Music Association, states that they are talking a break from doing bar shows to do some all-ages shows.

There’s a mixed bag tonight featuring Russia Attacks, an all-girl band from Medicine Hat that sing about Russian history. There’s Thwomp, a Calgary-based Nintendo cover band who cover songs from classics such as Chrono Trigger, F-Zero, Final Fantasy and more. Mordichia is Jonathan Micheal Walker from Medicine Hat who plays music that can be described as techno-indie experimental kinda stuff. Lastly is Ghostkeeper is some genuinely good indie-rock from Calgary.

Also keep in mind there is also a Gob show tonight happening in Redcliff (it’s kinda pricey though). Doors open at 8PM and admission is $5, and like I stated before, it’s an all-ages show so bring your babies – I’m talking about newborns and the like – bring em’ all.

There will be a $5 cover charge and it will be DJ Bones’ first time DJing in Medicine Hat. The cool part is he will be taking requests all night as well he will be taking pre-requests via the Facebook Event board.

This Tuesday, November 25th, get ready for some rock with a touch of experimental. Both bands have a lot of variety. The Summerlad and Kava Kava are playing at The Ottoman Lounge, hosted by Young & Pretty Folk Music Association, starting at 8:00PM.

The Summerlad is:
Arran Fisher (bass, guitar, floor pedals, Kord Poly 800II)
Dean Martin (drums, Microkorg)
Garret McClure (vocals, guitar, vocoder, Yamaha Electone)

With that mix of synthesizers you can tell it’s gonna be crazy. The Summerlad is from Calgary and their music can be described as an eclectic mix of indie, psychedelic rock, and noise – much a long the same lines as Godspeed You! Black Emperor (the length of their songs confirms the comparison).

Kava Kava is Jay Bowcott, resident of Medicine Hat. Kava Kava is more a long the lines of acoustic and soft rock mixed with other elements such as beats and piano. Kava Kava fronted by Bowcott is not to be confused with the other Kava Kava band out there. Kava Kava is supposedly is a herbal relexant that was banned and used to treat insomnia – a fitting reference?
