Recently Taylor and I have become Members at the Medicine Hat YMCA for the affordable “Couple’s Membership” of about $60 total per month.

Everyone is probably familiar enough with the YMCA, but I was impressed with just how much they have. Included in the most basic packages is access to the fitness area, which has a dozen treadmills, bikes and stair masters, circuit training room and fairly complete weight room. You also get access to the gymnasium and racquetball/squash courts. If you want a little more, you can join the Health Club, which then grants access to hot tubs and a more exclusive work out area.

From the YMCA Medicine Hat website, you can view upcoming activities and annual events, find out how to volunteer, ongoing charities, and more.

The only quarrel I have with the Medicine Hat YMCA is that their website was done by Look Matters, a Regina-based design company. Why is this a bad thing? Because the YMCA always promotes being “so local”, and advertises on their website that “We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities”, but where is the strength in community if they go out of the city for their design needs?

All in all, the YMCA is an affordable and enjoyable place to go and exercise. If you are at the downtown YMCA and see someone biking or stomping abnormally loud on the treadmill while laughing at their iPod, that is probably me.

On Sunday, June 21st, 2009 it will be the YMCA’s 25th anniversary Father’s Day River Run in Medicine Hat. Judging on how successful the recent Relay for Life was, which brought in an amazing 800 people and $290,000 in fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society – it would seem people love running and fundraising in Medicine Hat. Although this running event is a little different, expect a lot of these things to happen this summer. The following is a transcript from the pamphlet if you need more information. You can also grab the .PDF entry form and pamphlet here.

On April 19th, the second annual “Give the Gift of Life Fun Run & Walk” will take place at the downtown YMCA. Participants are encouraged to raise funds for patients waiting for organ transplants for The Kidney Foundation of Canada Southern Alberta Branch. Last year, the first time that the event took place, they had 60 participants and raised $15,000 stated Jodi Currie, manage of communications for the foundation. This year the organization hopes to raise $20,000 and bring at least 100 participants out. The event includes a light breakfast as well as entertainment from the local band, Mahoney. The event will be a 5 km fun run, or a 2 km walk for those who attend.
