I kind of had to post this Medicine Hat-based rap… by, none other than Kim Johnston? It’s pretty hilarious, in that, radio voice doesn’t translate so well to into a signing voice, especially in the chorus.

The spoofed song is Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind”, you know, for comparison sake.

Singer-songwriter, Akon is coming to Medicine Hat to perform at The Medicine Hat Arena with Danny Fernandes and Girlicious on Sunday, November 1st, 2009.

*UPDATE* The show has now been moved to the Cypress Centre.

Akon is a Senegales-American R&B singer-songwriter who rose to recognition in 2004 and has since put out a number of radio-recognized songs that, like most rap, include a large amount of sexual innuendo, as well as typical rap-stereotype references to drugs, alcohol, f-words, n-words, and much more (you can already tell I am a fan… Sarcasm intended).

Some hit songs include: Right Now (Na Na Na), Smack That, Gangsta, Ghetto, most of the content of which can easily be guessed by the name of the song.

Tickets are $49 or $69 and can be purchased at www.tixx.ca

I’m a little late on mentioning this massive live performance, as most of you probably already know about it, but the event coordinator did give me an email, so I will oblige.  Canadian-born Sean Kingston will be performing live in the Cypress Centre on September 30th (located on the Stampede grounds). The concert, like most big ones in the city, is presented by My96FM and tickets are available by phone call at 403-527-1234 or online here.

Even though it’s not entirely my most listened to type of genre, I admit, I’m a sucker for “autotune” and electronic beats/rhythm, mix that with some reggae fusion and you have Sean Kingston’s “Fire Burning” single, which I add, I do personally think is quite catchy.

This Saturday, July 11th, Karl Wolf will be playing at Dublin’s Pub. I know it’s kind of “WTF?”, but I think something fishy is going on here. As well, the guest list includes Kay & AACE, Cash Flo, and Absent Minds. First of all, I thought this is kind of weird considering Dublin’s is fairly small for an act like this, not to mention the posters say “All Ages!”, yet below that it says (with licensed 18+ area) which leads me to believe that the show might be happening in the now empty building inside/beside Dublin’s Pub (in the same building, that used to be a Bingo hall). It would be cool if anybody can confirm this. Karl Wolf’s MySpace lists the event as “Dublin’s Event Room” so I might be right in my speculations.

Anyways, the doors will open at 7PM on Saturday night and advanced tickets are going for $20 a pop available at either Shoe Warehouse (for minors) or Dublin’s Pub, it doesn’t list a door price, but I assume around the $25 mark. Karl Wolf will also be doing a 3PM autograph signing at the Medicine Hat Mall on Saturday. Although I’m not a big fan of the artists playing, I do like Karl Wolf’s cover of Toto’s (think back to the 80’s) “Africa”. All artists playing are Canadian(ish), so that’s a definite plus! Dublin’s Pub is located at 4 Strachan Court SE and you should try some of their food if you have a chance – it’s excellent! Links and videos after the jump… THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »
