Blue Cat Eight cordially invites you to their painting show at the Medicine Hat Cultural Center on the evening of December 3rd, 2008. The show starts at about 8:00PM. As always, free wine and perhaps beer will be available, and even perhaps delicious fruits, vegetables, crackers and maybe meats will be up for grabs by the attendees. If you are in College, it is a good way to socialize or get lots of vegetables and fruits to fight scurvy, whichever you prefer the most. Blue Cat Eight features student’s work from the Painting I class in the Visual Communications program at the Medicine Hat College.

The event will show the artwork of the following artists:

Emily Borody, Chelsey Buchinski, April Dammann, Lacey Fehr, Jessica Hayward, Jane Jacoby, Carol Jordan, Kristian Jungk, Safira Lachapelle, Amanda Lowey, Allison Martin, Vincent Matt, Kaitlyn Mckinley, Jonathan Moscoso, Meredith Penner, Matthew Shorten, Charis Slusar, Laura Sou, Erin Stankewich, Kathlene Steel, Ashley Steier, Matthew Valgardson.

A fairly complete and concise history of the Richardson Family Murders and Jeremy Steinke Trial.

Every source online or in the media says they cannot name the Richardson daughter because she is under the age for being tried as an adult for the crimes she committed. But if you Google “Richardson Family Murder”, the Wikipedia article, and every source or media reference gives the history as: “Richardson family was killed by their daughter and/or Jeremy Steinke.” As a result, in this article, we will abide by The Law and not give her name, instead, we will just call her “Richardson”, because that much has already been said everywhere else in the media.

Jeremy Steinke and his girlfriend apparently met one day in early 2006. Sources vary as to the location of their meeting, going between a local Punk Rock show in Medicine Hat and on the social networking website Nexopia. At any rate. As Jeremy Steinke was 23 years old at the time, and his girlfriend was 12, her parents – Marc and Debra Richardson – naturally wished the two not to date; however, Richardson continued to see Steinke. At length, her parents forbid her from seeing him entirely. During the ordeal, the couple maintained contact through various social networking websites on the Internet. Nexopia, Vampirefreaks and Bolt seem to be the main three.

On Vampirefreaks, Jeremy Steinke listed several personal interests that many people in the Western World have. BMXing, skateboarding, snowboarding, cars, music, piercings, tattoos. But as the list goes down, the interests get a little more (socially perceived) dark and name such interests as scarification, pain, “kinky fetishes”, blood, razorblades, Lycan’s and his girlfriend. In his profile on Bolt, Steinke describes himself as “A Gothic individual who believes in blood, destruction, guts, gore and greed. Am I God’s champion or Satan’s angel?” Apparently, he would often comment to his friends how he was a 300 year old werewolf.

Perceivably, these traits, coupled with photographs of him wearing dark clothes and eyeliner, and having a shaved head, lead many people – as I have heard discussed – to comment on how “weird” and “freaky” he is. The truth is that no matter how “bad” a person might appear, they might be the nicest person ever. I have been to quite a few Punk Rock shows, and there are numerous people who “look” dangerous or threatening, but when you talk to them, they seem quite intellectual, or even so nice as to help you up if you get knocked down while dancing. But the 300 year old werewolf thing is kind of weird. All-in-all, his interests, style of dress, and falsified comments regarding himself were probably, in part, an attempt by him to appear to be part of certain scenes (music scenes, trends, etc.) and getting people to pay attention to him. At any rate, in an interview his Mother said he was a very nice young man. Mother’s are always right, as mine always says.

In a topic earlier posted it was discussed how The Doghouse, Ezzies and the Kensho-Kai Karate Club had burned down. Since then, new information had been brought forward by the owners and the investigators.

It looks as though the fire had started in the attic and since the building is fairly old, it did not have any “firewalls” which would normally impede fires – in this case, since  the fire spread so rapidly, firefighters could not salvage a lot of the building. Although, all that 40% alcohol probably didn’t help the haste of the fire, haha… not to make light of the situation of course. On that same note, surprisingly the Kensho-Kai Karate Club was hardly harmed at all – since it was located in the basement. Most of their equipment was unharmed besides any water damage that occured. The 30 or so students will be resume their classes and use the cleaned-up equipment at their new temporary location, the Medicine Hat Monumental warehouse. They still do not know the actual cause of the fire.

The Doghouse has recently updated its site showcasing many links to all the news stories, but also links to a new Facebook group entitled “MAKE THE DOGHOUSE BIGGER AND BETTER” which already has 288 members. The Doghouse owner, Stig Gjerlaug is noted as saying (in a Medicine Hat News interview) that “We poured our hearts into that place, everything was going so well” and that he loves bringing entertainment to the community and he wants to continue. It really showed too, The Doghouse brought a lot of artists to Medicine Hat, that without The Doghouse probably would of never came here including bands like SNFU and A Wilhelm Scream to name a few. There was also a couple events that now have to be canceled or at least redirected including a perfomance by Priestess.

Not that it is really Medicine Hat-based, but the other day, on November 22, 2008, YouTube broadcast it’s first and hopefully annual event called YouTube Live. Although, in a way, since it is on the Internet, it is like it is actually in Medicine Hat, if not everywhere at once.

YouTube Live was broadcast live from San Fransisco and featured about three and a half hours of live show coverage as well as backstage cameras and audience cameras. The event was highly geared towards Internet phenomena from all around the world who had “made it big” using YouTube’s services. People and acts from all over joined in San Fransisco to participate. The most amazing part to me was the fact that I knew about probably 80% of the acts and people and who they were and what they did to gain fame, and to see them all come together was wonderful.

The acts included performances by Joe Satriani with FunTwo, Mythbusters, Fred, Katy Perry, Chad Vader, The Spinto Band, and much more.

Check http://www.youtube.com/user/live for more information and videos of the show.

And of course, check http://www.youtube.com/MHCVideo for a bunch of videos that students in Visual Communications at the Medicine Hat College have created.

View Midnight Madness 2011 Instead

*Updated November 26th, 2008*

As part of officially kicking off the Christmas season, starting at 6:00PM on Thursday, November 27th, the Medicine Hat downtown area will be hosting “Midnight Madness”. Many businesses downtown will have their doors opened until midnight – many featuring huge deals and savings. Labels For Men & Women, for example, will opening their second floor for this night only – trying to sell huge amounts of their inventory at reduced prices. For a complete listing of businesses and places having sales, take a look at this huge list on the Downtown Medicine Hat site.

Other events include Santa arriving at the city hall at 6PM, tree lighting ceremony, Christmas carols, ice sculptures, free parking and the international festival of trees. I’m not sure what that last one is about, but I guess you have to go down and check it out to find out. For more information and complete listing of events, check out the Downtown Medicine Hat site events page.

This is madness! Madness? This is MEDICINE HAAAAAT! (300 reference for good measure)

Mount Royal (or Mt. Royal) is a born and bread Medicine Hat-based band.

Image courtesy of Mt. Royal's MySpace

The band operates primarily as a quintet, consisting of brothers Robert and Thomas DiNinno, Steve Lind, Ryan Goehring and Dustin Desharnais, but it is not unusual for other members and friends to drift in and out casually, most notably Mike Wallace and Nicole Brunel.

Mount Royal was initially conceived in the early 2000’s, starting out as a high school band by The DiNinno brothers. Since then, they have received much success mainly in the Medicine Hat area and most often play at The Ottoman Lounge. They often attract the majority of the student population of the Medicine Hat Visual Communications cousre to their shows, as The DiNinno brothers both participated in the course. Over the past two summers, Mount Royal has done two cross-Canada tours and in going between the east and west coast, have befriended many musicians along the way, always to return with open arms to their fans in Medicine Hat.

You can easily find out if Mount Royal is playing a show simply by looking around Medicine Hat for the craziest band posters. Extreme colour usages, crazy illustrations and fighting robots are among their intriguing way of advertising shows.

Mount Royal at The Ottoman Lounge

At shows, it is not unusual to see the crowd get into their music, or conversely, to see random people who have not witnessed them before have an awkward look on their face, not being sure what to make of the unique style of music. Such a response, I am sure, would make Mount Royal all the more happier with their performance. As The DiNinno brothers are from the Medicine Hat Visual Communications course, that makes them especially crazy, if not often times labeled as “those crazy art guys”, which so many of us art graduates become known as.

With two cross-Canada tours under their belts, Mount Royal continues to rock the Medicine Hat and lower Alberta music scenes. Shows are relatively inexpensive, usually it is about $5 per person to enter, which gets you access to seeing usually 2-4 bands. Think about it! You can either go to a two hour movie for $10 per person, or for $5 per person, you can witness live creativity in front of your eyes. Check out their MySpace for show times.

Magic: The Gathering

Friday Night Magic! 5:00PM until around 8:00PM. I personally go to this one often, as I have been in to Magic: The Gathering since in my early teens (off and on addiction). Magic: The Gathering is the most successful and longest running collectible card game (circa 1993) of all time.

HeroClix

The lesser known of the three games, HeroClix happens from 12:00PM (noon) until around 3:30PM. HeroClix is a collectible miniature or figure game in which players battle each other, turn-based on a gridded play mat.

Warhammer 40,000 (WH40K)

This one happens on Sunday from 12:00PM to 5:00pm. Players are encouraged to bring their armies and their paints. There was fire in the sky in the early evening of November 20, 2008, as a massive meteorite streaked across the Canadian Prairies. The sky lit up as far north as the Territories, and as far East and West as British Columbia and Manitoba respectively.

As we are near the latter part of the year, the days inevitably are getting shorter, so it is already quite dark by 530PM when the meteorite screeched across the sky. As a result, residents of Medicine Hat were amazed to see how it apparently seemed like it was midday time from the flame-engulfed ball of space rock.

It is speculated that the meteorite fell somewhere in central Alberta. Search parties are expected to begin this weekend to try and claim pieces of the rock.

It seems that a joke from the popular cartoon South Park titled “Kick A Ginger Day” got taken too literally
on November 20th in Medicine Hat and across the country. Teachers across the nation were warned by school boards to be on the lookout for attacks or out-of-hand jokes towards red haired children.

Throughout the day, My96FM describes that Facebook, one of the most popular social networking websites, also sported a public group declaring the event over a national scale. Continually throughout their “Free Speech Friday”, people have been calling in, discussing their thoughts on how Facebook and television is to blame.

In Medicine Hat, “Kick A Ginger Day” was accompanied by few students at various schools, including Medicine Hat High School, McCoy High School, Crescent Heights High School, refusing to go to school on November 20. In other cases, one student was allegedly kicked over 200 times, while in another case, one student was allegedly hospitalized after being kicked so hard.

South Park Ginger Kids

South Park Ginger Kids

*UPDATE*
It seems as though the situation and comments were blown out of proportion. It was reported in the Medicine Hat News (days later) that no student was kicked 200 times and no student was ever hospitalized. The police were never called about any assaults. While kids were reported to have been kicked, it was clearly only in a friendly, jokingly manner.

This kind of behavior, like with most semi-violent or violent situations, brings up the irresolvable questions that asks if television and video games provoke violence. Do they? Personally, I believe that if kids are raised poorly, it will have a good effect on their judgment and consciousness, and to determine properly what is right and what is wrong. There are, indeed as we all know and have heard the media report, some cases in which youths of well-standing families turn awry and do things unexpected and violent.

* Click THE JUMP below to continue reading about how television, the Internet, and video games are not responsible for violence committed by youths.
