Medicine Hat Media

This is the first post I’ve done of this kind on Medicine Hat Media. Small tweaks and changes over the sites short history were always just done and never commented about. The changes done in this case are more important – or important enough to do a post about.

New Logo

Somebody recently asked us for our logo which made us come under the realization that our “logo” was more of just a site header rather than a traditional logo-type that could be used in multiple applications. Which really was bad considering I never do that for any of my projects and I did graduate from the Visual Communication program after all. I was also never satisfied with what I created in the first place – it was just too busy and meaningless for the sites function.

Although I’m traditionally opposed to using the “tipi” imagery since it’s so cliche; I think it speaks more about our site than anything else ever could. I also wanted to add things like “art” and “music” symbolism into the logo but was too busy and maybe was too specific anyways since this site ranges topics a lot more now than it did in the past. So more than anything, this site is about commenting about Medicine Hat – the reference that the speech bubble with the tipi conveys.

I felt kind of guilty by not posting this before with my Mary Anne Barkhouse posting on February 12th. At the time, I didn’t even know Dean Francis was also having a show on the same night. Well, no problem – you might have missed out on the reception but his work is still being displayed until April 1st, 2009.

His work involves very technical, almost photo realistic oil paintings about wildlife, nature, and the open landscape. In some instances his brush strokes appear to be looser on some paintings, especially when painting grass and tree branches, but in other cases, when he is painting clouds and animals, they seem very detailed and the brush strokes are not as apparent. I believe all the paintings he has in the Esplande are new works from 2008 and 2009.

Dean Francis has been painting for over 30 years, being outside recording and analyzing the landscape, nature and the animals in the outdoors. His paintings are very vibrant which is odd considering much of the subject matter that some would consider “the boring prairies”, but I think he captures the settings in his own “light” and conveys their real beauty without being over the top.

Lindsey Sine from the Loudly Whispered Theatre writes into us:

From the people who brought you Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol last December comes one of David French’s most beautiful stories about the Mercer family. Loudly Whispered Theatre is proud to present Soldier’s Heart by David French. Set in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland in 1924, the play focuses on the young son of a soldier who fought in World War I. The boy confronts his dad to relive the horrific memories of war on July 1, 1916 that still haunt and torment his father eight years later.

Written Description:

“What you might know about Helen of Troy, “the face that launched a thousand ships” is a ruse.  Helen was in Egypt the whole time the Trojan War was being fought. Helen’s image was used as bait by Aphrodite to lure a foreign prince while Helen biding her time awaiting news about the war being fought over “her”. Helen’s rightful husband, Menelaus, is shipwrecked in Egypt and discovers the reason for his entire expedition to Troy (and it’s destruction) was a false trail. The new Pharaoh doesn’t intend to honor his father’s agreement to keep her safe but plans to force her to marry him instead. Will they escape Egypt in time?”

This stage adaption of Helen: A Spartan Love Story is a look into what might of happened if 20th Century Fox asked Marilyn Monroe to film this project. Be sure to come check out this nostalgic mash-up of Sparta, Troy, Egypt and 1950’s actors and actresses. Thanks to Charleen Wilson for this submission.

Kirby, also known as John Kirby, is a talented Canadian folk artist and will be playing at The Ottoman Lounge, March 19th, and again on April 17th. Kirby has toured Canada solo three times in 2008 in support of his second release “The Good Fight EP”. Now, on this tour, he has 32 separate dates all across Canada.

Listening through some of his online stuff and even downloading his full set of releases; yes that’s right, you can legally grab all of his music (including demos and other stuff) in good ol’ MP3 form right off of his website here – he seems to be a very talented folk artist in the traditional acoustic singer-songwriter fashion, reminding me of John Mayer in my limited scope. Lots of his music seems depressing or more introspective on a basic level, but as one commenter put it, Craig Webster, on his blog,

“On the surface, you might think songs like “Defeat” and “Lost Loved Ones” are songs of sorrow and despair, but you’d be wrong. Instead, they are songs about overcoming your obstacles, and they show the listener that no matter how bleak life and its situations might look, there is an optimistic way to look at it.”

I think I would tend to agree with him, especially when viewing his first video single “The Good Fight” (shown below).

A Canadian movie, just released (March 6th) called ‘One Week’ with Joshua Jackson from Dawson’s Creek fame.  It was filmed across Canada and there is an interesting story of the filming in Medicine Hat.

http://www.oneweek.ca/home

From the website, Director Michael McGowan talks about how the film was made on a shoestring budget and explains that this type of guerrilla filmmaking mirrored the spontaneous nature of the story and the lead character’s journey. “Countless times, if we happened to drive by a location that we liked, we’d just stop and shoot,” McGowan says. “Fortunately, everything that could have gone wrong– everything from Josh falling off the bike to bad weather to locations we couldn’t get–didn’t happen.”

For example, one of the most stunning locations in the film is ‘Fran’s ranch’. Finding the location was pure luck. “This was always going to be an ambitious day of filming. We needed a stunning vista, a pick-up truck, a farm. Horses for the actors to ride and not to mention lunch for the crew,” McGowan says. Typically this would involve wranglers, extensive location scouting and organizing the infrastructure to shoot in a remote location. By the time the crew arrived in Medicine Hat, on a Friday, they still didn’t have a location for their Monday shoot.
