Brooks has it’s own TV station now. Well… sort of.

Darin Crapo, an IT specialist in Brooks, has taken a video making hobby to a higher level. He created a series of tourism videos for the county of Newell. Working in this genre and doing these projects has brought him in contact with a number of aspiring videographers in his hometown.

Darin decided he would create a forum for himself and other video makers, where they could showcase Brooks, as well as Southern Alberta. It’s called 4U2CTV and is quickly becoming Brooks TV.

A couple of months ago in Veterans-Riverside Park there were a bunch of paving stones removed from around the tank area. These pavers were lifted and used to make a large fire pit. I couldn’t help but think how long it must have taken to construct this and the fact that nobody reported a fire going in the park.

Don’t know why, but I’m always surprised to see that there is a common problem of homeless and transients downtown. I’m never downtown in the Wee hours when I guess a lot of trespassing and vandalism occurs. I don’t think most people see this side of our City.

The Monarch Theatre is premiering the sixth film of their summer series ‘Films Al Fresco’ on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 9:00PM at the Kin Coulee Park Band Shell.

Monarch - Viva Las Vegas

Monarch - Viva Las Vegas

The movie this evening will be the 1964 Elvis extravaganza Viva Las Vegas starring Elvis Presley and Ann Margaret.

“It’s all color and glamour and sexy fun.” – Sean Axmaker, msn.com

In this high-voltage musical, the King plays Lucky Jackson, an aspiring auto racer with a dream of winning the Grand Prix. While desperately trying to raise the money for a new engine he meets sexy, spunky Rusty Martin (Ann Margaret), a swimming instructor who falls for him against her will. The King croons, shakes, and shimmies while Ann-Margret shows her mastery of 60’s dance moves in the glitzy, electric production numbers. It’s a jewel of a film that ranks among Elvis’s best. The movie is rated PG for mild thematic elements.

People are reminded to bring a blanket or lawn chairs, as there is no fixed seating available in the park. Come early to get the best spot and to enjoy some pre-show Elvis entertainment.

As with all of the films in the “Films Al Fresco” series, this event is being held as a fundraiser for the Monarch Theatre Revitalization Project, and admission is by donation. The suggested donation is $5.00. Concessions (pop, Monarch popcorn, chips, candy, chocolate bars) will be available for sale on site, and all proceeds will benefit the Monarch Theatre.

The ‘Films Al Fresco’ series is sponsored by CHAT 94.5 FM and MY96 FM. Viva Las Vegas is additionally sponsored by Hebert Wellness and the Zucchini Blossom Cafe.

Our movie on this evening will be Steven Spielberg’s unforgettable family film “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” (1982) starring Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is Steven Spielberg’s warmhearted classic delight for both children and adults. It tells the story of an alien creature, E.T., mistakenly left behind on Earth. When a young boy, Elliott (Henry Thomas), finds E.T. and hides him in his home, both their worlds are changed forever. E.T. teaches Elliott and his two siblings (Drew Barrymore and Robert MacNaughton), whose parents have recently separated, about caring and love while the children protect E.T. from the scary and sometimes sinister
world of grown-ups.

The movie is rated PG for language and mild thematic elements.

Midsummer Nights Dream

Midsummer Night's Dream

Our movie this evening will be “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (1999) starring Christian Bale, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kevin Kline, Rupert Everett, Stanley Tucci, Calista Flockhart, Anna Friel, Daniel Strathairn, Dominic West, Sophie Marceau, and Sam Rockwell.

This adaptation of Shakespeare’s magical comedy of a love-tangled summer’s evening shimmers with sumptuous cinematography and a truly stellar ensemble cast. Set in the Tuscan countryside, the film follows the romantic misadventures of four lovers who wander into the forest and are magically bewitched by the creatures living there. This cheerful romp is a feast for the senses set to a magnificent classical score and is the perfect entertainment for a languid midsummer’s evening. The movie is rated PG for mild sensuality.

Maverick Rides Again

Maverick Rides Again

The Monarch Theatre’s “Films Al Fresco” series is premiering its third film of the summer on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 9:00PM at the Kin Coulee Park Band Shell.

Our movie on this evening will be the western comedy “Maverick” (1994) starring Mel Gibson, James Garner, Jodie Foster, James Coburn, Alfred Molina, and Graham Greene.

From the director of The Goonies and Lethal Weapon, and the writer of The Princess Bride, Maverick is the story of Bret Maverick, that charming, amoral gambler of TV fame. He’s back, and still wreaking comic havoc wherever he goes. This time, Maverick’s out to compete in the Three Rivers Poker Championship, but he’s got one small problem: he still needs another three grand for the entrance fee. Soon he finds himself in all sorts of trouble – being held up in a bank robbery, trapped on runaway stagecoach, shot at by a Russian archduke, and held captive by natives… doing anything he must to get that cash.

Scatterheart are a high-energy rock band coming out of Vancouver and will be playing at The Ottoman Lounge tomorrow night (July 17th) at 10PM. The cover, $5, seems pretty cheap for an act like this. Scatterheart usually performs with a crazy stage presence act which includes dancing and costumes. They were recently touring with Bif Naked but are stopping by Medicine Hat again for this show (and many other cities across Canada). Much of their music reminds me of another Canadian rock band, Robin Black – they share that certain “glam rock” sound. View their new video single, “Beautiful” after the jump.

Location: The Ottoman Lounge
Where: 502 South Railway St. SE.
Cover: $5
When: Friday, July 17th
Start Time: 10PM

Back in May the Canadian Forces did urban exercises in Medicine Hat. If you haven’t seen this yet, it’s worth a look to see the excellent training they received here.

In about eight weeks or so, most of the military participants that trained here will be on the ground in Afghanistan.

All our best wishes for a safe tour of duty.

In a deflated economy we’re still seeing a lot of business activity and expansion in the ‘Hat’. To name a couple examples, the Northlands strip mall and positive suggestions from City Council that the Events Centre is still in the works.

In my opinion, it’s great to see that our region hasn’t folded up the tents to wait out the storm. Long live our entrepreneurs!
