Here’s another one of those bigger name bands showing up in Medicine Hat in 2009. Vancouver band, Marianas Trench will be playing an all ages show at the Cypress Centre on October 30th, 2009. With them, are three guests: The New Cities, Carly Rae Jepsen (of Canadian Idol fame), and The Mission District. All of the bands are in or around the same genre: that pop-punky rock type stuff, some might reference “emo” as well with except Carly Rae Jepsen who is more folk-pop. They are also all Canadian bands ranging from all over the country.

Tickets will be $25 and you can get them by calling 403-527-1234 or online here. Seems pretty worth it to me, $25 for a big line-up like this?

Dayglo Abortions

A match made in heaven, Dayglo Abortions, the Grandfathers of Canadian Punk Rock, will be rocking The Royal on Wednesday, September 30 with BDFM (Calgary) and locals Common Enemy and The Finishers.

Since their formation in 1979, Dayglo Abortions have had their fair share of media scrutiny with controversial album artwork and titles such as Feed Us A Fetus & Corporate Whores (plus many others much too vulgar for this site). In 1988, the courts attempted to prosecute the band for possession with intent to distribute of obscene materials, but Dayglo was found not guilty.

Controversy aside, they always put on great show, full of humour, beer and a good dose of vulgarity, much like any night at the good ‘ol Royal!

Doors open for the keeners at 6PM, tickets are $12.

A bit about Mobadass:

As a double platinum artist and 3-time Juno nominee, Mobadass’ Earl Pereira has established himself as arguably the most entertaining bass player in the country. Being the bassist and co-founder of one of Canada’s best live bands Wide Mouth Mason, Pereira has already had a successful career highlighted by numerous top 20 radio and video hits.

By 2004, Pereira felt it was time to put his energy and experience into a new passion. He founded Mobadass as a creative outlet for his distinct style of “island rock” music. This is a sound created by combining music of his two cultures, the Philippines and Canada with soulful reggae-rock and funky pop.

Blurb About Mojave:

Officially formed in early 2007, Mojave started as a side project from two members of Vancouver hard rock bands, Damsel Fly and Latitude. Having already spent a few years writing songs together, LJ and Paul had an entire album ready to record by the time their bands called it quits. Mojave’s sound draws from the bands previous rock background, but is softened with classical elements like viola and violin. Bringing the sound together is an eclectic mix of percussion. At the forefront are female vocals with delicately intertwined acoustic guitars – weaving melodies, telling stories.

Even though The Trews were in the Gas City in May of this year they are set to rock the Hat once again on September 19 as part of a free concert for the Medicine Hat College Homecoming. Gates open to the public at 6 but the show doesn’t start until 7. The organizers wish to remind potential concert goers that although there is plenty of space for the show admittance will occur on a first come, first served basis, so get there early!

I had the pleasure of seeing The Trews in concert when they visited as the opening act for Nickelback a few years ago. I hadn’t ever heard of them before going to that concert, and looking back I wish I would have paid more attention, because since then I have become quite a fan of their music. These Canadian rockers sport a sound that is distinct in that they have jazzy feel to a lot of their music, utilizing such instruments as the bagpipes, mandolin, brass, piano and many more.

I personally enjoyed their first album more than their most recent one, however now that I have been given the opportunity to see them I will definitely be making myself a fixture at their show in two weeks. There will be a beer garden on site for those of age to enjoy and limited parking so please try to carpool or use public transit if possible.  Bring a blanket, leave your pet at home, and get ready to enjoy a phenomenal free concert in the south soccer field at the Medicine Hat College Saturday, September 19.

Collective Soul is coming to Medicine Hat on October 20, 2009 and they will be rocking up the Cypress Centre at the Stampede Grounds.

I have not listened to Collective Soul in years years, but still listen to a few songs every now and then when they come on the radio. I used to listen to them all the time way back in the day when I used to play Starcraft and Alt-Tab to chat on ICQ (around 1998 or 1999), even before I met Vaughn and got into Punk Rock from his musical influence.

Collective Soul will no doubt be playing some of their bigger hits at the show, including “Run”, which is probably their most recognizable song.

Tickets are $42.50 and available at the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede website: http://tickets.mhstampede.com.

Between Satellites - Adam Smood, Devin Maclean, Trav Lesmiester

There is a new up and coming punk band in Medicine Hat and they call themselves Between Satellites. They represent a refreshingly new facet of the fading punk scene in the Gas City.

Often describing themselves as pop-punk (think Blink 182), Between Satellites has appeared at such events as Battle of the Bands and the International Youth Day festivities. They will soon be adding playing at the movie in Athletic Park tonight to their list of shows. The guys will be providing some entertainment to movie goers before the movie starts.

Unfortunately, the band recently lost their bassist and is actively looking for a replacement. So if any one out there thinks they have what it takes to join the band, drop a line on either their MySpace or Facebook group!
