There is no real true way to describe the music that is JoHnNy DoN’t. With such a wide spectrum of influences you could say that they play anything and everything that is entertainment, and with each song comes a new surprise and a an irresistible hook that commands your attention. With their high energy performance and comedic banter JoHnNy DoN’t never leaves a crowd disappointed… maybe slightly offended, but never disappointed. THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

DOA's Joey Keithley - "I, Shithead" Book

DOA's Joey Keithley - "I, Shithead" Book Cover

DOA is a hardcore punk rock band that formed in 1978 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Along with the bands Black Flag, Bad Brains and Minor Threat, they are often considered the founders of hardcore punk rock.

The band has been around for more than 30 years and currently is fronted by singer/guitarist Joey “Shithead” Keithley and accompanied by Dan Yaremko and James Hayden. Their music, like most punk rock, takes a strong stance on politics. Their lyrics often involve anti-racism, anti-globalization, freedom and drug use. It is not uncommon for DOA to perform for causes and benefits to raise awareness on specific issues.

Since forming in 1978, DOA has created and released 16 studio albums, 7 compilation albums and 16 music videos. In total, they have sold more than 500,000 records and played more than 3000 shows in 30 different countries.

In keeping parallel with the “Do It Yourself” attitude that lots of punkers have, when DOA started, Joey Keithley created Sudden Death Records, an indie record label to release DOA albums on. The label remained only a part-time business until around 1998 when they began to sign more bands. Sudden Death Records now has about 30 bands signed to it.

DOA has been cited as an influence by many bigger and more well known bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Rancid and The Offspring. They have toured with The Clash, The Ramones, The Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Nirvana and Minor Threat.

In 2004, the book “I, Shithead” was released, which recollects Joey Keithley’s life in punk rock. The book starts out from him and his friends as kids getting into music, starting DOA, rioting, drinking, and playing their music. The book reveals DOA’s famous slogan: “Talk minus Action equals Zero.”

As if the achievements over a 30 year career were not enough of a reward, in 2003, Vancouver’s then-mayor Larry Campbell declared December 21st to be “D.O.A. Day” in honour of the band’s 25th anniversary.

SNFU - March 10

SNFU - March 10

SNFU, another classic Canadian punk rock band, is scheduled to return to our city on Wednesday March 10th, this time to rock the infamous Royal Hotel. On top of their always entertaining performance, they will be showing an exclusive screening of the new documentary Open Your Mouth And Say… Mr. Chi Pig, an in depth look at SNFU’s colourful frontman. If you’re not familiar with Chi Pig, he’s well-known in the punk rock community for his theatrical style show, full of obscure props and costumes. He is truly one of Canada’s best performers and stills rock harder than most bands half his age.

Tickets for the show are $15 (only available at the door), with a door time of 6PM. Joining SNFU are BDFM from Calgary and Medicine Hat’s own hardcore outfit Helltrack.

Three Days Grace - Image from Ticketmaster.ca

Three Days Grace - Image from Ticketmaster.ca

There’s a lot of big names coming through Medicine Hat lately, is this a sign of our city growing up?

Either way, Three Days Grace with guests The Used will be playing at the Arena in just over a month’s time on November 28th, 2009 (7PM). Although I’m not a huge fan of Three Days Grace myself, but their newest video (shown below) is pretty sweet; albeit, a bit lame in some ways. They are also a hugely successful rock band with tons of radio hits. Their last released album, “Life Starts Now” sold more than 6 million worldwide which is a nice accomplishment for the Canadian rock band from Norwood, Ontario.

The Used on the other hand are an American post-hardcore (punk/rock/emo for the laymen) band that is touring to promote their newest album, “Artwork” which was released on August 31st, 2009. It’s quite odd for me listing The Used as a guest considering they are definitely the more popular band and have also achieved Gold and Platinum statuses in more than six countries worldwide. I also quite enjoy their music.

Tickets are $44.50 (floor) or $39.50 (seats) or, supposedly, you can get a VIP package for this event. What that means, I have no idea, but it will cost you $250.00 or $175.00. Call 403-502-8777 for more details on those.

Uh oh, is this another semi-positive article about a non-My96FM event? Sound the Kim Johnston alarms! I kid, I kid. Some people will know what I am talking about.

Large scale punk rock is coming to Medicine Hat on March 12th, 2010!

One of Canada’s current, most popular rock bands, Billy Talent is on tour to promote their summer release of the album, Billy Talent III. They are touring with Canada’s Alexisonfire who are also promoting their summer release of their new album, Old Crows / Young Cardinals. Backing those two big names is the punk band, Against Me! who’s popularity has been rapidly growing since their 2007 release of the album, New Wave. Against Me! vocalist and guitar player, Tom Gabel has pushed this Florida based bands success with his unique lyrical voice and song structure.

The show is being sponsored and presented by ROCK 105.3. The three band line up are going to put on an awesome show. If you have not pre-ordered your tickets, then I strongly recommend getting them as soon as possible as they are now available at tixx.ca

Dayglo Abortions

A match made in heaven, Dayglo Abortions, the Grandfathers of Canadian Punk Rock, will be rocking The Royal on Wednesday, September 30 with BDFM (Calgary) and locals Common Enemy and The Finishers.

Since their formation in 1979, Dayglo Abortions have had their fair share of media scrutiny with controversial album artwork and titles such as Feed Us A Fetus & Corporate Whores (plus many others much too vulgar for this site). In 1988, the courts attempted to prosecute the band for possession with intent to distribute of obscene materials, but Dayglo was found not guilty.

Controversy aside, they always put on great show, full of humour, beer and a good dose of vulgarity, much like any night at the good ‘ol Royal!

Doors open for the keeners at 6PM, tickets are $12.

Flogging Molly is heading back to Calgary this year for what would promise to be an amazing show.

Flogging Molly - Float

Flogging Molly - Float

The band is a seven piece Celtic Punk Rock band in nature, utilizing a myriad of instruments, including: Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, banjo, spoons, fiddles, tin whistles, uillean pipes, accordions, mandolins, drums, and a few other unique instruments that are rare to see in rock bands. Their lyrical content varies greatly, going between songs about pirates, death family, love, history, the government, and other punk rock-related subjects. Lead singer/songwriter Dave King uses his Irish background to bring out interesting ways (dialect and accent) of saying what he wants to say.

A few of us went to the show last year and it was probably the funnest show I had ever been to, I do not think I ever stopped doing the awkward shuffle arm-swinging type dance that I do, much to Vaughn’s ridicule. Every now and then during their show, Dave King took off his blazer and proceeded to do spin entertaining Irish jig. Most people physically slow down, but not him. It is clear that the band has as much fun as the crowd while they perform.

If you want to go to a show that is devoid of any specific thematic of lyrical content and has people in the crowd from every genre in attendance, go check them out.

Between Satellites - Adam Smood, Devin Maclean, Trav Lesmiester

Between Satellites - Adam Smood, Devin Maclean, Trav Lesmiester

There is a new up and coming punk band in Medicine Hat and they call themselves Between Satellites. They represent a refreshingly new facet of the fading punk scene in the Gas City.

Often describing themselves as pop-punk (think Blink 182), Between Satellites has appeared at such events as Battle of the Bands and the International Youth Day festivities. They will soon be adding playing at the movie in Athletic Park tonight to their list of shows. The guys will be providing some entertainment to movie goers before the movie starts.

Unfortunately, the band recently lost their bassist and is actively looking for a replacement. So if any one out there thinks they have what it takes to join the band, drop a line on either their MySpace or Facebook group!
