Scatterheart last performed at the Ottoman Lounge a couple months ago and it looks like they are back for more. This time they will be playing on Friday, October 16th starting at 9:30PM at the Ottoman Lounge again. I should also mention that they were in the Medicine Hat even before that on their tour with Bif Naked. After the last show, a local blogger and avid-music-listener type of fellow, Chris did a couple blog posts on his site about the band and his experience with them at their last show which were an interesting read. Scatterheart, the band themselves, even did a full video blog about the Ottoman Lounge and their experience in Medicine Hat (video below) – talk about dedication!

Akon in Medicine Hat on November 1, 2009.

Akon in Medicine Hat on November 1, 2009.

Singer-songwriter, Akon is coming to Medicine Hat to perform at The Medicine Hat Arena with Danny Fernandes and Girlicious on Sunday, November 1st, 2009.

*UPDATE* The show has now been moved to the Cypress Centre.

Akon is a Senegales-American R&B singer-songwriter who rose to recognition in 2004 and has since put out a number of radio-recognized songs that, like most rap, include a large amount of sexual innuendo, as well as typical rap-stereotype references to drugs, alcohol, f-words, n-words, and much more (you can already tell I am a fan… Sarcasm intended).

Some hit songs include: Right Now (Na Na Na), Smack That, Gangsta, Ghetto, most of the content of which can easily be guessed by the name of the song.

Tickets are $49 or $69 and can be purchased at www.tixx.ca

The Village People are discoing their way to Medicine Hat to “rock” The Esplanade on October 31, 2009 at 8PM.

The 6 member disco group needs no introduction as to who they are after being around since the late 1970’s. Their costumes and culturally iconic songs are immediately recognizable to the masses, even to people who do not commonly listen to the group. People are encouraged to wear their best costume (it’s Halloween, after all) as there will be lots of pre-show hi-jinx in the lobby with local band Mahoney and local magic man, Trevor Moore.

Tickets are $39 for regular admission ($44 for balcony) and can be purchased at www.tixx.ca

Keith's 214th Birthday

Keith's 214th Birthday

Today (October 5th) is Alexander Keith’s 214th Birthday, and hatters can celebrate tonight with the annual party at The Silver Buckle. East coast celtic folk trio The Stables will be the entertainment of the evening (they actually have a bass made out of a hockey stick, a wash basin and a string, that’s reason alone to check it out). There will be giveaways all night, with the grand prize a limited edition beer barrel bar fridge, which has been on display at The Buckle for the last week or so, as well as the staple Keith’s foam antlers and commemorative pint glasses.

The party gets started at 9:00PM, $5 at the door.

Saturday Night, October 3rd at 9:30PM, The Perms will be playing live at The Ottoman Lounge. Local band, Planets will be opening for them. There will be the $5 cover charge as usual. The Perms are coming through Medicine Hat on their Western Canadian tour. An excerpt from a user review about The Perms:

If you want a great rockin’ head boppin’ pop album, Winnipeg’s The Perms latest “Keep You Up When You’re Down” will fit the bill. In fact this album pushes The Perms as a major player in the power pop genre. The opening single “Give Me All Your Lovin” is a catchy high energy song that sounds a bit like KISS meets Sloan. This is followed by the gem “As You Were” with a driving chorus and roaring guitars along the lines of the Posies or Velvet Crush. Both “Running Away” and “World To Me” continues to kick things up with harmonious guitars and vocals. The band flirts with a bigger arena sound on “You Don’t Know” but stop short of Bon Jovi/Def Leppard territory…  If the Perms were not on your radar before — now is the time to pay attention. Here’s another one of those bigger name bands showing up in Medicine Hat in 2009. Vancouver band, Marianas Trench will be playing an all ages show at the Cypress Centre on October 30th, 2009. With them, are three guests: The New Cities, Carly Rae Jepsen (of Canadian Idol fame), and The Mission District. All of the bands are in or around the same genre: that pop-punky rock type stuff, some might reference “emo” as well with except Carly Rae Jepsen who is more folk-pop. They are also all Canadian bands ranging from all over the country.

Tickets will be $25 and you can get them by calling 403-527-1234 or online here. Seems pretty worth it to me, $25 for a big line-up like this?

Dayglo Abortions

A match made in heaven, Dayglo Abortions, the Grandfathers of Canadian Punk Rock, will be rocking The Royal on Wednesday, September 30 with BDFM (Calgary) and locals Common Enemy and The Finishers.

Since their formation in 1979, Dayglo Abortions have had their fair share of media scrutiny with controversial album artwork and titles such as Feed Us A Fetus & Corporate Whores (plus many others much too vulgar for this site). In 1988, the courts attempted to prosecute the band for possession with intent to distribute of obscene materials, but Dayglo was found not guilty.

Controversy aside, they always put on great show, full of humour, beer and a good dose of vulgarity, much like any night at the good ‘ol Royal!

Doors open for the keeners at 6PM, tickets are $12.

Alberta Arts Days Poster

Alberta Arts Days Poster

Alberta Arts Days is the celebration of art in many forms all across Alberta. From September 18th – 20th there are over 500 events in 100 different communities. Medicine Hat has been chosen to be a focal point for many of the events in Southern Alberta.

Don’t forget, the reception for Maureen Newton’s “This is for the Birds” art show is Thursday September 17th (today) at 7:00pm. Reception is free of charge! The show started August 22nd and will run up until Sunday, October 11th, 2009 – so if you miss the reception, you still have time. It’s definitely worth checking out and events at the Esplanade on the 19th are FREE.

You can visit www.albertaartsdays.ca for more details, they also have a Facebook group where other places are advertising how each community is celebrating. Even though I’ll be doing some work at the Esplanade for the Artisans Fair, I might just go over to the Tyrrell Museum and check out what’s going on over there this weekend. For a full (huge) listing of events and the details, go to the event listing page for Medicine Hat.

A bit about Mobadass:

As a double platinum artist and 3-time Juno nominee, Mobadass’ Earl Pereira has established himself as arguably the most entertaining bass player in the country. Being the bassist and co-founder of one of Canada’s best live bands Wide Mouth Mason, Pereira has already had a successful career highlighted by numerous top 20 radio and video hits.

By 2004, Pereira felt it was time to put his energy and experience into a new passion. He founded Mobadass as a creative outlet for his distinct style of “island rock” music. This is a sound created by combining music of his two cultures, the Philippines and Canada with soulful reggae-rock and funky pop.
