Scatterheart are a high-energy rock band coming out of Vancouver and will be playing at The Ottoman Lounge tomorrow night (July 17th) at 10PM. The cover, $5, seems pretty cheap for an act like this. Scatterheart usually performs with a crazy stage presence act which includes dancing and costumes. They were recently touring with Bif Naked but are stopping by Medicine Hat again for this show (and many other cities across Canada). Much of their music reminds me of another Canadian rock band, Robin Black – they share that certain “glam rock” sound. View their new video single, “Beautiful” after the jump.

Location: The Ottoman Lounge
Where: 502 South Railway St. SE.
Cover: $5
When: Friday, July 17th
Start Time: 10PM

This Saturday, July 18th, Eagles Nest Ranch will have the pleasure of welcoming one of Canada’s most talented performers and one of the most famous musicians to call Alberta home. Paul Brandt will be performing a benefit concert to support the ranch in sponsoring camp-goers to give all kids the chance to experience the joy of a week at summer camp.

The evening includes a fully catered steak dinner, a silent auction with items including 2 autographed guitars, and of course, an intimate concert in the new amphitheater at the Ranch.

Although I’ve never had the opportunity to see a Paul Brandt show, I know many people who have and all of them have been impressed by his showmanship. Tickets are $100 and are available through www.tixx.ca so “come be a part of the dream: be a part of a place where kids are important.”

Auresia, Canadian Reggae musician will be playing Saturday night, June 11th, 9:30 at the Ottoman Lounge. She is currently touring to promote her self-produced and self-titled debut album and has gigs all over Canada.

Excerpt from MySpace:

Auresia has just released her self-produced Debut Album! She is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, artist from Montreal and has performed her original roots compositions for the last 7 years. Hers is a new urban blend of contemporary island roots music. With words, melody, meditative riddims and her hauntingly angelic voice, she continues the tradition of raising consciousness with song, part of the musical/spiritual movement of raising consciousness with music.

This Saturday, July 11th, Karl Wolf will be playing at Dublin’s Pub. I know it’s kind of “WTF?”, but I think something fishy is going on here. As well, the guest list includes Kay & AACE, Cash Flo, and Absent Minds. First of all, I thought this is kind of weird considering Dublin’s is fairly small for an act like this, not to mention the posters say “All Ages!”, yet below that it says (with licensed 18+ area) which leads me to believe that the show might be happening in the now empty building inside/beside Dublin’s Pub (in the same building, that used to be a Bingo hall). It would be cool if anybody can confirm this. Karl Wolf’s MySpace lists the event as “Dublin’s Event Room” so I might be right in my speculations.

Anyways, the doors will open at 7PM on Saturday night and advanced tickets are going for $20 a pop available at either Shoe Warehouse (for minors) or Dublin’s Pub, it doesn’t list a door price, but I assume around the $25 mark. Karl Wolf will also be doing a 3PM autograph signing at the Medicine Hat Mall on Saturday. Although I’m not a big fan of the artists playing, I do like Karl Wolf’s cover of Toto’s (think back to the 80’s) “Africa”. All artists playing are Canadian(ish), so that’s a definite plus! Dublin’s Pub is located at 4 Strachan Court SE and you should try some of their food if you have a chance – it’s excellent! Links and videos after the jump… THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

A little bit about James Murdoch:

Western Canadian Music Award winner and four time nominee, James Murdoch has performed across North America. His forthcoming CD, “Wondering Where The Rush Has Gone”, will be released June 9th, 2009. Murdoch’s previous release, “In Transit”, which was produced by Hawksley Workman, won Best Album Design and was nominated for Album of the Year and Video of the Year at the 2008 WCMA’s.

Canada Day is coming up and there will be a whole lot of events going on in and around the city.

The Canada Day celebration kicks off at 730AM at the Lion’s Club with a pancake breakfast and officially ends with Fireworks in Kin Coulee park.  I sure hope the hills in the coulee start on fire again, that is at least half the fireworks entertainment value!

Other entertainment will include bands, lotteries, food and snack stands, and of course, merchandise.

A compilation of the events can be found on the events section of the Canada Day Medicine Hat website, check it out.

This year’s Medicine Hat’s own Jazz festival, “Medicine Hat JazzFest” will be taking place from June 19th to the 28th with events happening every day in between. I would first love to congratulate the team that brought together the graphics and design direction for the program booklet, the website, posters, and even the t-shirts – it is really well done and beautifully executed. If anybody knows who did it, I would love to find out.

Anyways, moving right a long, This year’s JazzFest has a crazy amount of events, musicians and gatherings throughout the full 9 days. I was at first going to list them verbatim from the program booklet, but alas, they were really organized and even have an online PDF for your viewing and reading pleasure. I will tell you though that it features more than 30 different events with almost as many different bands or performers.

You can also grab yourself a ticket pass which costs $139, but this allows you to get into every show without a cover charge, so it’s well worth it even if you plan on going to half the events. There’s a couple restrictions though, make sure you read the fine print on the ticket page. If you are really into it, make sure you read through the full program because there is some other events happening not listed in the schedule including events happening at places like Twist, The Ottoman Lounge and Devine to name a very few.

If you are broke, looking for free shows or just don’t like supporting local and national music for some reason (for shame!), there is also plenty of no charge events going on as well. More notably in this category, is the Vespa Youth Stage which will be a free BBQ as well as feature music by plenty of local young talents in the city including Jess Dollimont. This one will take place at Riverside Bandshell First St. S.E. (across from City Hall) starting at noon Thursday, June 25th.

Mr. Chi Pig - Photography from CBC.ca (Jess Watt)

Mr. Chi Pig - Photography from CBC.ca (Jess Watt)

Just got a Facebook message alerting me that SNFU, the popular Canadian skate punk band is returning to play in Medicine Hat. They were last in the city nearly a year ago, a little bit after we first started this site, although we didn’t write about it at the time even though Sean and I both went. They played in the now late Doghouse, which burnt down shortly after they played there.

This time they will be playing at The Ottoman Lounge which means you we get to see first hand the weird and twisted, gross-out humour displayed by the band’s lead singer, Ken Chinn (Mr. Chi Pig) up close and personal. They have a weird assortment of stage props and masks that Mr. Chi Pig just loves to sing with.

I also shouldn’t state that they are a “skate punk” band because they do tend to delve into more hardcore or melodic punk as well. SNFU, as a band have recently (2007) reassembled after several previous break-ups and have been touring and playing quite steadily since, even though they haven’t released a new CD since 2004. However, according to some articles, they are gearing up to begin recording their new album this year.

Location: The Ottoman Lounge
Where: 502 South Railway St. SE.
Tickets: $15 (available now)
When: Saturday, June 20th
Start Time: Show will start around 10PM

Bif Naked (Beth Torbert) Live - Photo from MySpace

Bif Naked (Beth Torbert) Live - Photo from MySpace

Bif Naked, popular Canadian rock band is scheduled to rock the Esplanade June 22nd, 2009 at 8:00PM. The show will be all ages and will cost $32 a ticket. I also wanted to mention how illogical it is to have these kinds of shows at the Esplanade, I mean, there’s no standing row, it’s all seated. Prepare to “rock out” or dance whilst sitting! But all that aside, it’s nice to see a band like this coming to Medicine Hat as always. Beth Torbert and her band, Bif Naked has been touring to promote her newest album entitled “The Promise”.

I started listening to Bif Naked back when she/they released “I Bificus” in 1999 when I heard the song “Spaceman” plastered all over Much Music at the time. I was also into a lot of other rock bands at that time as well like The Tea Party (ugh) and Smashing Pumpkins so I was digging Bif Naked as well. In the recent years I haven’t really kept up with her music other than listening to the casual single off of each new album. Videos and links supplied after the jump.
