“This year’s graduating exhibition for Visual Communications students is an examination, exploration and exploitation into the social, moral, and ethical implications of the business of repurposing these axiomatic brands and compositions. The magnifying lens is on how often and how pervasively our culture uses and reuses images and brands for their own purpose.” Nelson Yuen – Instructor

Medicine Hat College is calling all alumni, students, and community members to join us on September 17 & 18, 2010 for Homecoming.

The annual college celebration will feature new activities for families and continue the festival theme of previous years. This year we are ecstatic to announce Canadian band Default will headline the main stage concert.

Default’s career got started when they were discovered by Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger shortly after forming in Vancouver in 1999. Kroeger’s interest led him to support the production of their debut album The Fallout. Their latest album, Comes and Goes, debuted in September 2009.

In addition to the concert, the homecoming weekend will include:

Friday, September 17, 2010

  • 1982/83 Alumni invitation dinner

Saturday, September 18, 2010

  • Rattlers Hall of Fame Breakfast at 9:30 am
  • Rattlers Soccer Action
  • Women’s Game at Noon
  • Men’s Game at 2 pm
  • ATB Family Fun Zone gates open at 4 pm
  • Kinsmen Beer Gardens gates open at 4 pm
  • Concert starts at 7 pm
  • Fireworks to close the show

Medicine Hat College has approached the City of Medicine Hat with a proposal to gain full use of the Cultural Centre for the relocation and expansion of the Visual Communications Program. The City has agreed to work with the College and key stakeholders to determine if a viable solution can be found for the relocation of the current City supported user groups.

City and College officials met with key stakeholders last night in three small group meetings to provide information, address concerns and answer questions.

“The initial meetings last night were intended to start the engagement process with key stakeholders by providing information and setting expectations for the process,” said Ron Webb, Commissioner of Public Services for the City of Medicine Hat.” To date, no decisions have been made and the City is interested in discussing options with stakeholders at the next meeting.”

A closed stakeholder workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2, 2010. Stakeholders will be asked to identify and assess potential options through participation in facilitated discussions. Once a recommendation is complete, it will be presented to City Council for their final decision.

To date, the Cultural Centre has been used as a shared space for college and community cultural groups, but the needs of the College have changed and without full access to this space, they cannot expand the Visual Communications program.

“The relocation for this hallmark program will not only serve the students and faculty of Medicine Hat College, but will contribute to the vibrant cultural growth of the city,” said Dr. Ralph Weeks, President of Medicine Hat College.

As the project progresses, open houses will be scheduled accordingly to inform the community.

Arrival in Medicine Hat

Arrival in Medicine Hat

I’d like to thank the kind citizens of Medicine Hat for making my short visit a special one. I toured around discovering the local scenery – The Teepee, the local mailbox (a little too closely), and even the Medicine Hat College’s Square Show. Sigh, breathing the fresh Alberta air was so relaxing. Daisies dancing gently in the wind as the breeze softly whistled through the branches of a nearby tree. It was beautiful and relaxing and everyone was so welcoming and friendly.  I love traveling to new places.  Do you think I should continue traveling?  Visit my website and let me know by voting – www.ivanthegnome.com.

As a teacher, I am fond of quotes that inspire or force us to view an issue from another perspective. One of my favorites is credited to Henry Adams, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops”. Forgiving the gender bias in the quote, I read those words and realize that the smallest gesture, word spoken or moment in a classroom may have an impact beyond the walls of my classroom. Bearing the quote in mind, as many readers may be aware already, the University of Alberta is more than likely discontinuing the Collaborative Elementary Education program offered at the MHC campus following the 2010 intake. You may have had the (mis)fortune of being subjected to my letter to the editor where I unashamedly quoted from one of the many teacher-related movies. In any case, here is a brief background: the program began in 2006, with 28 students graduating in 2008. Thirty-three students will graduate this spring, with 65 undergraduate students currently applying for the 32 possible spots for the 2010 program. The program relies upon both local and University of Alberta instructors to provide instruction over the final two years of an Elementary Education degree completion program, with a minor in rural education. Students in the program apply for one of 32 spots, with admission being highly competitive and based on GPA. Students pay University of Alberta tuition and fees and purchase textbooks from the U of A via the MHC bookstore. Several of the courses are compressed courses, meaning that you complete 16 weeks of course work in anywhere from 4-6 weeks, with U of A instructors flown in to offer instruction. Courses taught by local instructors are generally standard length, except for the first and final semesters.

It would be easy for me, as a beneficiary of the program, to say that its potential loss doesn’t affect me, since I am two weeks away from completing my degree. However, as a teacher and member of my community it is a matter of concern. I am sure most people have personal circumstances that make the idea of pursuing postsecondary education difficult at best. Issues such as expense and the time commitment greatly impact the feasibility of any pursuit. For someone who is a parent or needs to work while attending school, the option of being able to complete a degree while learning in your home community, where you have support and decreased expense, is important. With respect to the Collaborative Program, I was able to continue my education, an option not available to me otherwise. I am not alone. Looking at the current cohort, many of us would never be able to proudly say that we are teachers. Just this past weekend, I reserved my graduation apparel and planned my convocation trip to collect my hard-earned degree, only to hear the news on Monday that the program was in jeopardy. What saddens me is the fact that there are students on the MHC campus, writing exams this week, whose future is uncertain; they very likely will not enjoy the same experience that I have had, an experience now relegated to luxury status. They have already invested time and money into courses that will only transfer to the University of Alberta. Having spoken with several of these students recently, I know for a fact that without the U of A/MHC Collaborative program, they will not be able to continue their education. Rattler Run 2010

Rattler Run 2010

The Medicine Hat College annual Rattler Run is coming up again and is open to all ages of all competitive levels.

The Rattler Run is a fun run, designed to give the Medicine Hat community an opportunity to be outside, get some exercise, fresh air, and have fun. The city, after all, has over 100km of trail systems, so the Rattler Run gives everyone an opportunity to appreciate them.

This year’s run will take place on Saturday, April 24th, between 9:00AM and 10:30AM. Water stops will be placed along the way for runners/walkers, some health snacks for after, and an awards ceremony for the runners.

Like last year, Taylor and I will be volunteering at the water stops, so at the very least you can see how organized and OCD our station will be.

Registration can be done online or through snail mail, but must be completed before April 24th. To register, check the following: http://www.mhc.ab.ca/befitforlife/rattler-run/registration.php

For more information, including cost and maps of the routes, please visit: http://www.mhc.ab.ca/befitforlife/rattler-run/default.html

If you want to get involved with running for fun or competitively, please visit the Medicine Hat Mad Hatters Running Club.

It seems Medicine Hat Media has been left out of the Visual Communications graduation show media release for the second year in a row. This is the last time we will advertise for them! Just kidding… or am I?

The exhibition for the graduation show is open daily between April 3-12 from 9:30AM and 4:30PM in the Medicine Hat College’s main lobby. The reception happens on Friday, April 9th, at 7:00PM, which coincides with The Children’s Hour that starts up at 7:30PM on the 9th.

I have received an invitation through my place of employment for the grad show, but it does not give too much information about what you can expect by attending the show. So judging by their website, reconcilehere.ca, it looks as though there are drawings, paintings, photographs, graphic design and perhaps sculptures.

The branding for the grad show  is done again with a straight Helvetica type face. The website is a minimalistic WordPress theme, which unlike past years, allows everyone with access to the back-end of it to log in and upload their own photos. The website allows users to “Reconcile“, whereby the user can post any reconciliations they have, which will then automatically be posted to the website. I posted one:

I am a sad panda that this website was not submitted to http://www.medicinehatmedia.com to raise awareness for the reception!
-Sean

I hope this years graduation show is not advertised to be environmentally friendly, like last year’s Lost & Found show, whose organizers purchased huge amounts of corrugated cardboard to be connotative of the theme, which was probably just thrown out afterwards.

The reception should be host to food and alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages, music and dancing. Come down, check some art, hear some music and get your fill of food. THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Wednesday morning at 10:25, the Medicine Hat College received a phone call to the switchboard claiming there was a bomb on campus. After the fire alarms were triggered, the building was evacuated of all students and faculty. It was a short time after that, when emergency services arrived to sweep the campus. There was absolutely nothing found on the premises that was unusual or out of the ordinary, and the College was cleared to re-open around noon.

The college President & CEO Dr. Ralph Weeks released his statement about the bomb scare. “Our first priority is always the safety and security of students and employees. The decision to close the campus and conduct a safety check is disruptive but is the prudent course of action in a situation like this.”

While it interfered with students that were present, and in the middle of writing  final exams, it was also very disruptive for students who were waiting to find out if their exams were going to go on as scheduled. I personally felt that this situation was more than likely, nothing short of a student who needed more study time. I had phoned the campus daycare, as a first priority to ensure that my child was okay, and was told this type of scare normally falls in the middle of final exams. Regardless of why it was done, it certainly was no joke to students, faculty or parents with a child on the premises.

I have to say that Medicine Hat College was very proactive with this situation. I received two e-mails from the College explaining the situation, and was advised to keep checking messages to find out further details. Not only that, but there were updates on Twitter and the MHCollege fan page of Facebook.

There is still no word on the culprit, or if they have been caught. I’m curious though, to know if it was a student and what their final exam was for!

Even though The Trews were in the Gas City in May of this year they are set to rock the Hat once again on September 19 as part of a free concert for the Medicine Hat College Homecoming. Gates open to the public at 6 but the show doesn’t start until 7. The organizers wish to remind potential concert goers that although there is plenty of space for the show admittance will occur on a first come, first served basis, so get there early!

I had the pleasure of seeing The Trews in concert when they visited as the opening act for Nickelback a few years ago. I hadn’t ever heard of them before going to that concert, and looking back I wish I would have paid more attention, because since then I have become quite a fan of their music. These Canadian rockers sport a sound that is distinct in that they have jazzy feel to a lot of their music, utilizing such instruments as the bagpipes, mandolin, brass, piano and many more.

I personally enjoyed their first album more than their most recent one, however now that I have been given the opportunity to see them I will definitely be making myself a fixture at their show in two weeks. There will be a beer garden on site for those of age to enjoy and limited parking so please try to carpool or use public transit if possible.  Bring a blanket, leave your pet at home, and get ready to enjoy a phenomenal free concert in the south soccer field at the Medicine Hat College Saturday, September 19.
