5 W’s + 1 H Concerning the Sentinel Society

Sent in by Reid Edward Erb of the Sentinel Society

WHO?
My name is Reid Edward Erb. I am 21 years old and have lived in Seven Persons my whole life. In the fall I will be going to university to study physics. If all goes according to plan, I’ll be going into a Master’s of Architecture program once I get my B.Sc.

WHAT?
I am trying to start a secret society devoted to the general improvement of life in south-eastern Alberta. Of course, I’ve already put flyers for it all over town and told everybody I know about it on Facebook and now I’m writing this, so it’s really less of a secret society and more of a “secret” society. It will be called The Sentinel Society

WHY?
Lots of reasons, I guess. Like I said, I’ve lived in the area my whole life, and as much as I love it here, it’s pretty obvious that it could be better in many, many different ways. No doubt, if you’re reading this website, you probably feel the same way. This can be kind of a frustrating place to live! For most of my teen years, nearly all I did was fantasize about moving to a bigger, “better” city (i.e. Regina, Vancouver, Brooklyn), but now, having stuck around for a couple more years, I think that would be kind of a cop-out. As ridiculous and old-fashioned as it might sound, I feel that I’m duty-bound to stay here and do whatever I can to make Medicine Hat and the greater area a better place. I’m hoping to find some people who feel the same way.

HOW?
There’s a lot we can do to work towards a better Alberta! Right now I just want to get a bunch of people together to talk and listen to each other and try to figure out exactly what a “better Alberta” really would be. In the beginning we’ll probably just be trying to support and let people know about the people already working around town (i.e. local charities, local businesses, local artists and musicians). Really, there’s already a lot of great stuff going on around the Hat, and if people just knew about it, and knew they had a community behind them, it would really encourage them to go out and do something themselves! Besides that, I’d like us to organize some events in the community. Basically just try to get people excited about living here!

WHEN?
Our first meeting will be on Sunday, May 15 at 3:00 p.m. I’m guessing it’ll go for about an hour, but it depends on how many people come and how the conversation goes, I guess.

WHERE?
Meet me at the Riverside Memorial Park. I’ll be waiting under the cenotaph. After that we’ll take a bit of a walk around town and talk for a while. Walking has always helped me to think, and I think it’ll make for a more casual atmosphere besides.

Remember: you can make a difference! See you on Sunday!

    Charles says:

What about the freemasons and Shriners (same thing) in all of Alberta and the world. You don’t think they’re doing a good job?
