The 1980’s are coming back to Medicine Hat for one night thanks to Alderman Jeremy Thompson’s re-election campaign.

As a kick-off to election week, Thompson’s campaign team is hosting a “Totally Rad ‘80s Party” on Saturday, October 9. The event begins at 7:30 PM at Southside Events Centre and boasts the Calgary-based “RETRObution,” a popular ‘80s cover band.

In addition to live music, the party will feature elaborate décor, custom cake from Cake Break and food. Local event planner Stephanie Richards promises a masterpiece of details.

“This will be an evening of reliving your favourite things from the 1980s,” said Richards. “From hostesses on roller skates to popular snacks from those years, you will feel like the clock has turned back. It promises to take Medicine Hat events to the next plateau.”

Party-goers are encouraged to dress in the style of the decade, with a prize for best dressed as well as door prizes. Tickets are $50 each or $350 for a table of eight. They can be purchased online at www.thompson4mh.com/events.html#bash or by calling (403) 504-5647.

Thompson said the ‘80s party is not meant to be seen as a campaign event. Additionally, any funds raised in excess of costs will be donated to a local charity.

“This party celebrates the beginning of voting week,” he said. “It’s not just for my supporters, but for anyone who wants to get excited about being a part of the democratic process of voting. I think it is important that we show people that elections can include more than just going to the polling station.”

Thompson’s quest to empower and engage a new generation of voters has led his campaign team to create events such as the retro ‘80s party, as well as the Thompson Family Skate this Saturday, October 2.

“Campaigning can be about more than door knocking and forums,” Thompson said. “Let’s also get out into the younger community, engage them, and encourage them to be a part of the future of their community by voting.”
