Akon & Guests at The Medicine Hat Arena

Akon in Medicine Hat on November 1, 2009.

Akon in Medicine Hat on November 1, 2009.

Singer-songwriter, Akon is coming to Medicine Hat to perform at The Medicine Hat Arena with Danny Fernandes and Girlicious on Sunday, November 1st, 2009.

*UPDATE* The show has now been moved to the Cypress Centre.

Akon is a Senegales-American R&B singer-songwriter who rose to recognition in 2004 and has since put out a number of radio-recognized songs that, like most rap, include a large amount of sexual innuendo, as well as typical rap-stereotype references to drugs, alcohol, f-words, n-words, and much more (you can already tell I am a fan… Sarcasm intended).

Some hit songs include: Right Now (Na Na Na), Smack That, Gangsta, Ghetto, most of the content of which can easily be guessed by the name of the song.

Tickets are $49 or $69 and can be purchased at www.tixx.ca

The best thing about Akon is he did a couple tracks with Lil Wayne. What’s wrong Sean, you don’t like putting your voice through an auto-tune synth and throwing cash money out of sports cars. (reference to like 80% of rap videos)

I used the Facebook Connector while logged into Facebook, and clicked on the Facebook label in Google Reader. The Akon article was placed in with my other links on Facebook and shows up in my Newsfeeds articles.

By clicking on the Akon link, I was brought to Medicine Hat Media to be able to leave this comment. Nice touch, but I think in the future I will only link to articles that are more to my interest than rap 🙁

Thanks for the information about that functionality Dean and sorry for your dismay, haha.

    Sean says:

I agree, Dean, rap is pretty much a drag. I prefer music that has some sort of message that I can relate to as opposed to music full of swears, massive sexual innuendo and lots of references to drug/alcohol abuse. But since for some reason I can’t understand, people like Akon, so doing a post seemed fitting.

    Vaughn says:

Ya, because Punk doesn’t have anything like that. Dwarves? The Queers? The Vandals? Misfits? GG Allin? They’re more vile than any rapper could be :P. Also, not ALL rap is like that, just like all punk isn’t vile, you seem to generalize too much. So stop all this rap hate right now NA NA NA… hahahah.

    Sean says:

I was questioning whether or not to put ‘full of swears’ in cause I knew you would reference punk. I guess NoFX references drugs and alcohol too; though they have been around for almost 30 years, so.

I don’t hate rap, I like 90’s ish rap somewhat. Just don’t like rap when it’s like, OH GIRL, /sexual inuendo, repeat for 4 minute song.

    Kim says:

I sure hope that ‘Hatter’s support this show. Even if you’re not the biggest fan, a great turn out at this show will benefit all music fans. Word travels fast among talent promoters, and if the Akon promoter loses his shirt on this one, others are surely going to be very cautious to bring other stars to MH.

Just a little thing though… Akon is definitely not “rap” as you say. Akon sings. Jay-Z & 50 Cent, THEY are rappers.

    Vaughn says:

Hey Kim, I would agree mostly with the “rap” thing – he’s definitely further removed from the genre; however, it’s probably just easier to lump him in that category, being a laymen of that type of music as Sean definitely is. Maybe this is a *hint* *hint* *nudge* *nudge* to get a proper write-up from My96FM for the events you guys are promoting to post on Medicine Hat Media 🙂

In the meantime, I will edit the post.

You guys only hate on what rap is about, because you’re own style is wack talking about killing familys, rape, and many other crued un-normal Lyrics. Rap is a way for life to some poeple. Rap has plenty of a point (we live in the slums, do drug/drink, **** women and say many other inupropriate thing as you all point out) But that is cause its the life we live. FACT-85% of the music in todays day and age is rap/hiphop and it is very muched loved. Ex.eazy E, Ludacris, Technine, Lil john, Eminem, Akon, DMX, Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, BigL, 2 Pac,Immortal Techneque, Killa Priest, 50 Cent, Young Buck and many more.

IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE STYLE THEN JUST DON’T LISTEN TO IT! NO ONE IS FORCING YOU. WE MAKE ENOUGH OFF IT WE REALLY DON’T NEED ANOTHER FAN SENDING ******* ME OFF!

    Vaughn says:

I listen to a bit of rap, mostly in the hip-hop fashion but your “facts”? 85%? Care to back that number up at all? Take a look at music sales in the US:

    http://encarta.msn.com/media_701500349_761551614_-1_1/Music_Sales_in_the_United_States_by_Genre.html

Even adding an insane 50% margin of error, still not 85%. Sure, rap and hip-hop is quite prevalent in the 2000’s, but it’s only truly been around and in the limelight for the past 20 years. Even if we don’t go by sales, take a look at the Billboard 200 as of today, you won’t be finding 85% rap/hip-hop there either, although you might be getting closer to lumped soul and R&B in there too.

I have no problem with the content and sound of rap music, just being the skeptic about your facts.

    Sean says:

I never said I hated rap, but it was probably obvious that it’s not my forte either. My ‘style’ of music generally has lyrics that I can relate to, while the majority of lyrical content that rap has to offer doesn’t appeal to me, but that doesn’t mean I can’t or shouldn’t post about the shows relative to the genre coming to Medicine Hat.

A better thing to do than get mad and swear about averages joes like me who don’t get your music is to write a song about it, make enough money off it from radio play and CD sales, and show me who’s boss. You can even advertise the release of your CD or your Medicine Hat tour dates on Medicine Hat Media. 🙂

Akon had sexual intercourse with **** of medicine hat at the medicine hat lodge after spending a intoxicated night at local k0r0nah tavern! Confermed
Reports clearly state the said female was diagnosed with genital HERPES Simplex 1 prier to the evening. NO condom was found in any rooms. The maid which dissclosed this valuable information wishes to remain anonymous.

Karl wolf (which was also in medicine hat at the time) spent his evening at local club “The Club”. Bouncers at local club seen Karl wolf in the mens room stall snorting a white substance off of the back of the toilet, when removed and asked to leave and pay for his bill, 3 separate credit cards where declined. However his “Star Status” “Paid” for his drinks.

A year and a half of Medicine Hat Media just paid for itself from Jonathon’s post. I wonder what he has to say about Sean Kingston, except he probably fell asleep before being able to party after his show cause he looks so tired. Jokes.
