Just a reminder, the reception for Whole Being starts at 8PM on Thursday, January 22 at the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre. Most of the Visual Communications staff will have entries in, and being seasoned artists in their prime, you can expect a good show.
Admission is free, there also will undoubtedly be some free foods and drinks for all who attend.

Starting December 16, 2008, at the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre, begins Whole Being, the biannual faculty exhibition from the staff of the Medicine Hat College Visual Communications program. The program of which is founded from the collaboration between fine art and design. The staff consists of a world-wide variety of skilled artisans, all specialized in their own way. Whole Being includes the professionals, Laara Cassells, Craig Cote, Deborah Forbes, Mato Higashitani, Rory Mahony, Micheal McClary, Poul Nielsen, Dean Smale, Yulin Wang, Giles Woodward, and Nelson Yuen. Poul Nielsen has also recently been a featured artist here at Medicine Hat Media; he specializes in drawing and painting. With all types of media combined, the show is surely to strike at all the senses, as well as instill deep thought about how we relate to the world in which we live.

The reception begins Thursday, January 22, 8PM, and is also free admission. The show ends February 1, 2009, making it the grand show to carry the Esplanade into the 2009 New Year. Here is the summary statement presented to you by the Esplanade:
“Artists and designers from the faculty of the Visual Communications Program at Medicine Hat College show exciting new works in all media which embrace art as a way of making sense (by every means) of the existing world and our place in it.”
On Friday, December 5, 2008, Medalta’s Squared Gallery will be hosting the Four 9t (490) & Video Night art opening. 490 (or Four 9t as it’s referred to in the poster) is the Directed Study class while the videos are presented by the Video class within the Visual Communications program at the Medicine Hat College. The 490 portion of the show will be opened for the public until January 10, 2009.

Come down for free wines and foods and see some student made videos and artwork. Showtime starts at 8PM at the Medalta Squared Gallery. Artwork displayed will include video, print material, photography, performance art, and more!
Medalta Historic Clay District is located at 713 Medalta Ave SE. The Squared Gallery itself is located inside the building (go left once you enter the building).
Blue Cat Eight cordially invites you to their painting show at the Medicine Hat Cultural Center on the evening of December 3rd, 2008. The show starts at about 8:00PM. As always, free wine and perhaps beer will be available, and even perhaps delicious fruits, vegetables, crackers and maybe meats will be up for grabs by the attendees. If you are in College, it is a good way to socialize or get lots of vegetables and fruits to fight scurvy, whichever you prefer the most. Blue Cat Eight features student’s work from the Painting I class in the Visual Communications program at the Medicine Hat College.

Mount Royal (or Mt. Royal) is a born and bread Medicine Hat-based band.

The band operates primarily as a quintet, consisting of brothers Robert and Thomas DiNinno, Steve Lind, Ryan Goehring and Dustin Desharnais, but it is not unusual for other members and friends to drift in and out casually, most notably Mike Wallace and Nicole Brunel.
Mount Royal was initially conceived in the early 2000′s, starting out as a high school band by The DiNinno brothers. Since then, they have received much success mainly in the Medicine Hat area and most often play at The Ottoman Lounge. They often attract the majority of the student population of the Medicine Hat Visual Communications cousre to their shows, as The DiNinno brothers both participated in the course. Over the past two summers, Mount Royal has done two cross-Canada tours and in going between the east and west coast, have befriended many musicians along the way, always to return with open arms to their fans in Medicine Hat.
You can easily find out if Mount Royal is playing a show simply by looking around Medicine Hat for the craziest band posters. Extreme colour usages, crazy illustrations and fighting robots are among their intriguing way of advertising shows.

At shows, it is not unusual to see the crowd get into their music, or conversely, to see random people who have not witnessed them before have an awkward look on their face, not being sure what to make of the unique style of music. Such a response, I am sure, would make Mount Royal all the more happier with their performance. As The DiNinno brothers are from the Medicine Hat Visual Communications course, that makes them especially crazy, if not often times labeled as “those crazy art guys”, which so many of us art graduates become known as.
With two cross-Canada tours under their belts, Mount Royal continues to rock the Medicine Hat and lower Alberta music scenes. Shows are relatively inexpensive, usually it is about $5 per person to enter, which gets you access to seeing usually 2-4 bands. Think about it! You can either go to a two hour movie for $10 per person, or for $5 per person, you can witness live creativity in front of your eyes. Check out their MySpace for show times.

Rapscallion Design is a Medicine Hat-based graphic design company.
The company has been in business for years now, producing designs that range from clothing to websites.
Rapscallion Design sports an in-house screenprinting service which they utilize as all their retail designs are created by hand and screenprinted by hand. Mass production is cool and all, but it is definitely an added bonus to feel that you are not a product of mass production and to support the arts. Their designs are not done by a bunch of kids who pirated the Adobe Creative Suite and learned how to trace in it, but totally opposite, the workers at Rapscallion Design have their degrees in Visual Communications, and after being in the industry for a number of years, can really produce some awesome work.

December 2nd is an in-house Graphic Design company based in Medicine Hat.
The revolution began, oddly enough, on the second of December one year. Since then, the company, headed by Rene Waters and Josh Gregg, have constantly produced the epitome of great graphic design in Medicine Hat. A lot of people knock Graphic Designers, stating that they cannot design websites because they do not know how coding for the Internet works, but truly, whether it comes to designing for print or for the web, December 2nd truly comes out on top.

Not just a designer, but also a teacher, Rene Waters has been an active educator for the Visual Communications course at The Medicine Hat College. It is not an awkward notion in the least to, as a student in Visual Communications, seek out the advice of either Rene Waters or Josh Gregg. Both have been in the industry for years and will always give the most honest of critiques and suggestions on work or ideas. It is not unusual to be welcomed into their studio.
Since forever ago, December 2nd has taken an active interest in employing students during their summer work terms. Most notably, the students are of the Visual Communication course. This gives not only the students a sure-footing for their career path, but gives December 2nd an added benefit of another creative mind to have input on their projects.
Poul Nielsen is a renaissance man of the art community. Actually, The word ‘community’ does not
actually do his name and accomplishments justice, a more appropriate term would be a renaissance
man of the art world, because world indeed, Poul has traveled far and wide in his pursuit of
not only artistic knowledge and discovery, but also far and wide to show his artistic expression
and talent.

Poul Nielsen is no stranger to the Medicine Hat community at large, and it is not unusual to see
his artwork anywhere you might look in The Medicine Hat College. As a teacher for Visual
Communications, he has influenced countless individuals with his artistic insight and creative
suggestion, but his career is not confined to Medicine Hat. Poul has had exhibitions in many
places outside of Canada, including Denmark, The United States, and China.

Tobie Laliberte, Medicine Hat (he actually isn’t from here, just living here) artist and musician, and father of two is this months featured artist. He is in his third year (and final year) of the Visual Communications program here at the Medicine Hat College. He also has won 12 consecutive french spelling bee contests. Actually that last one is a lie, I don’t know that much about him, although he is french and of the Canadian persuasion (if you couldn’t tell by his name). Below you will see two of his videos that he had created in Video 1 class during 2007.
