Things are going down in downtown Medicine Hat, as Amy Gervais of Rapscallion Design discusses on the Rapscallion website.

Some time ago, Medicine Hat Media discovered duplicate, but vastly different designed content for The Monarch, which we blogged about under the title “The Monarch Identity Crisis?“. Soon after we learned that The Monarch Theatre simply was not paying their bills or being thankful for the hundreds of hours of volunteer work that it took to get the theatre up and running.

The duplicate content can be found at http://themonarch.net/, which according to Amy Gervais’ story, was commissioned by the City Centre Development Agency with complete disregard to the design continuity and branding.

Medicine Hat Media, with the help of Ashley Meller, was behind The Monarch Theatre’s revitalization project from the get go. We advertised every show that was in Kin Coulee and even came out to support the events. We advertised movies that were playing and many of us behind Medicine Hat Media have regularly attended their screenings.

Medicine Hat residents and businesses should be supporting each other, not selling each other short. Who cares about a “historical downtown” if it just becomes derelict? Some of us at Medicine Hat Media are now going to withdraw all support from the theatre as we do not want to be a part of such a disappointing situation. If you are also concerned about the happenings and the state of Downtown Medicine Hat, please contact the city council.

Contributor, Mike has made me aware of a news segment broadcasted on CHAT TV that was just recently aired on January 14th. Just weeks after the Medicine Hat city council voted down funding options that would of seen construction begin on an event centre in our city, the community of Brooks begins to celebrate the opening of their new arena. While it’s easy to compare both of our cities because we are so close, that’s kind of a blind-sided thing to do. Medicine Hat is a different city than Brooks is, especially in the finance/money spending department, but being so close… it’s hard not to see this as ironic or sad in some way. Well… that is if you are for the events centre.

The City of Medicine Hat has launched its own Facebook page as part of its efforts to continue to improve communications with the public.

The city’s page includes events, news and other items of interest related to city services. Users of facebook.com can search for “City of Medicine Hat” to become a fan and join the city’s page or visit this direct link.

“The new Facebook page is part of the city’s plans to make communication with residents, businesses and potential newcomers as meaningful as possible by providing timely information and updates on city news, events, photos and much more,” says Jody Lamb, corporate communications manager. “Social networking sites like Facebook are becoming increasingly important in this day and age when people have more choices than ever to seek news and information.” THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Residents can now watch Medicine Hat City Council meetings online.

Starting September 9th, the City is adding the option of downloading or viewing a video broadcast of City Council meetings from its website. To date, residents have had the choices of attending City Council meetings or viewing them live via Shaw TV.

“This is a new value-added service to our residents that allows people to view the entire City Council meeting when they want in the comfort of their own home or any where there is an Internet connection, including from a smart phone,” says Mayor Norm Boucher. “This option gives residents 24-hour, seven days a week access to Council meetings.”

The first available online video broadcasts are the Tuesday, September 8th City Council meeting, followed by the Wednesday, September 9th Special City Council Meeting on the Strategic Review of the Natural Gas and Oil Production business. All videos will be available the following day as a video broadcast and / or download on the City’s website, located here.

Medicine Hat residents have an opportunity to comment directly to City Council on the Strategic Review of the natural gas and oil production business (Prodco) at a Special Meeting Monday, Aug. 31 at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers, City Hall.

The public is invited to make comments and or ask questions about the strategic review. The City’s Procedure Bylaw 2270 allows delegations to speak directly to Council for normally a maximum of five minutes, excluding Council members’ questions/answers or clarifications.

City Council retained Ernst & Young (E&Y), one of Canada’s leading professional services firms, in 2008 to undertake a strategic review of the City’s investment in its oil and natural gas production business. In January 2009, E&Y presented its five key recommendations for Prodco to City Council: THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Alberta Health Services wants to move Medicine Hat’s Ambulance Dispatch to Calgary. City Council and many hatters believe this is a terrible idea and another snub on our region. A petition on this issue has been created to have AHS re-think their decision.

If we can get a decent amount of signatures on the petition, city council will present this petition to the province. Click here to sign the petition!
