The Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre and The Hive Artists’ Hub Society are pleased to announce the official opening of The Hive Gallery & Boutique in the gift shop area of the Esplanade.

The new boutique is the perfect place to find unique local and regional artwork as well as handmade products such as paintings, photographs, jewelry, woodwork, one-of-a-kind clothing books on local history and more. The presence of The Hive in the Esplanade makes sense as both actively promote local artists and artisans. The consigning artists are mainly from Medicine Hat and area, and most of the sales items are created in The Hive Studios located at 569 Second Street Southeast. Hours of operation of The Hive Gallery & Boutique are Wednesday through Friday, 11 AM to 4 PM, Saturday, noon to 4 PM and during most Esplanade events.

“We are very pleased to welcome The Hive Gallery & Boutique to the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre. We’re certain our patrons will enjoy the access they provide to local handmade products,” says Manager of Cultural Development Carol Beatty.

The Hive is regularly seeking new consignment artists and artisans for the Gallery & Boutique. For more information, interested parties may contact The Hive at consignment@hivehub.ca and/or attend the first Annual General Meeting taking place on Friday March 29th, from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM, at The Hive Studios location (569 2nd Street Southeast).

As an addendum to the Midnight Madness Downtown 2009 article recently posted, the Esplanade has a great line-up scheduled for Thursday:

Medicine Hat Tigers Add to the Madness at the Esplanade

The Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre celebrates Midnight Madness on Thursday, Nov. 26 with a free craft workshop for kids, free admission to the galleries, guided tours, free hot chocolate and popcorn, and an Xbox™ tournament against a Medicine Hat Tiger hockey player. Midnight Madness activities are free and open to the public.

“The Art Gallery and Museum are currently showcasing Hockey Culture at the Esplanade with three exhibitions related to hockey, so it was natural to invite the Medicine Hat Tigers downtown for Midnight Madness to continue the whole hockey theme,” says Joanne Marion, Curator of Art at the Esplanade. I felt kind of guilty by not posting this before with my Mary Anne Barkhouse posting on February 12th. At the time, I didn’t even know Dean Francis was also having a show on the same night. Well, no problem – you might have missed out on the reception but his work is still being displayed until April 1st, 2009.

His work involves very technical, almost photo realistic oil paintings about wildlife, nature, and the open landscape. In some instances his brush strokes appear to be looser on some paintings, especially when painting grass and tree branches, but in other cases, when he is painting clouds and animals, they seem very detailed and the brush strokes are not as apparent. I believe all the paintings he has in the Esplande are new works from 2008 and 2009.

Dean Francis has been painting for over 30 years, being outside recording and analyzing the landscape, nature and the animals in the outdoors. His paintings are very vibrant which is odd considering much of the subject matter that some would consider “the boring prairies”, but I think he captures the settings in his own “light” and conveys their real beauty without being over the top.
