Residents can now watch Medicine Hat City Council meetings online.

Starting September 9th, the City is adding the option of downloading or viewing a video broadcast of City Council meetings from its website. To date, residents have had the choices of attending City Council meetings or viewing them live via Shaw TV.

“This is a new value-added service to our residents that allows people to view the entire City Council meeting when they want in the comfort of their own home or any where there is an Internet connection, including from a smart phone,” says Mayor Norm Boucher. “This option gives residents 24-hour, seven days a week access to Council meetings.”

The first available online video broadcasts are the Tuesday, September 8th City Council meeting, followed by the Wednesday, September 9th Special City Council Meeting on the Strategic Review of the Natural Gas and Oil Production business. All videos will be available the following day as a video broadcast and / or download on the City’s website, located here.

The United Conservatory of Music is the first musical destination for many, if not all, musicians in Medicine Hat and surrounding area. The Conservatory, or “UCOM”, as it is commonly called, started up in 1972 with only 25 students in its mix and 37 years later with hundreds of students, it is going stronger than ever.

The comfortable atmosphere is accentuated by the knowledgeable and friendly staff who generally greet you within minutes of entering the doorway. It is not uncommon to open the door and immediately hear guitar riffs filling the air.

The walls are lined with a wide array of products and brands, including Gibson, Ibanez, Tama, Sabian, Zildjian, and much more. The prices are usually the best you can find in town for brand name products.

I am no stranger to the drum section of the Conservatory, going there most often for new drum skins, sticks and the occasional piece of hardware. I am sure my face is not an uncommon one to see there after years of occasional visits.

The United Conservatory of Music is located in downtown Medicine Hat at #560 – 4th Street SE.

The online classifieds giant has officially opened its doors to our little corner of the earth. I wonder what their stipulation for creating new areas on their website is? Either way, it is definitely better than Facebook’s stipulations and it’s lack of a Medicine Hat network. Right now, the listings are pretty empty, in fact, they are completely empty, probably because nobody realized that it was open. Hopefully this post will drive some commerce to the website.

Personally, I would rather use craigslist over services like Facebook groups and Kijiji even though it may look “ugly” – it’s simple, lightweight, ad-free and very effective which is why it still dominates in other markets.

The Medicine Hat Tai Chi Association has launched their new website, and in celebration, they are offering a free demo of Tai Chi at the Cultural Centre on Monday, September 14 at 7:00 PM. Otherwise, the fall semester for the program runs between September 21 and December 7.

The Tai Chi Association brochure can be downloaded here.

Marty Knutson wrote in with the following story:

Medicine Hat Tai Chi Association

Medicine Hat Tai Chi Association

What is Tai Chi?
It is an ancient Chinese martial art that incorporates mind, body and spirit. The controlled, continuous movements are designed to impart powerful physical skills and to improve the flow of energy throughout the body. The many health benefits of Tai Chi have been documented for centuries, and include stress relief, sharpened mental abilities, and improved strength, flexibility and balance. Some forms of Tai Chi are all slow, even movements – making these forms accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. Other forms include powerful, explosive movements, testing the stamina and strength of even people with high athletic levels.

Will I be kicked and thrown around, like in some other martial arts?
No. Tai Chi was originally developed as a powerful fighting form. Although those elements remain in Tai Chi, it has evolved into a practice which emphasizes strength, balance, flexibility and health. The postures are performed with precision and control, in a specific sequence. Even the more aggressive punches and kicks are not directed at another individual.

Interested in the new school routes when your children have to go back to school on the 30th? A recently launched community site will help with with all you need to know! Tot-em Transportation, the company responsible for most school buses in the city has launched their new website and has .PDF route maps for tons of schools in the city, including:

Medicine Hat School District

Medicine Hat Catholic

Once you’ve clicked on a link above, make sure you select either AM or PM on the left hand side to be redirected to a list of corresponding maps (Note: only some schools have different AM/PM schedules). Alternatively, you can navigate around yourself at the Tot-em Transportation website. If your child’s school is not listed, please phone 403-527-6986 (ext 1) to get the information you need. I think it’s a pretty neat service and provides some much needed information for parents.

When Sean and I were looking around for local websites awhile ago we stumbled upon some obscure and unknown websites (at least to us), among them was the Sunridge Observatory and the Medicine Hat Astronomy Club website. I was very interested to find out that such a thing even existed around Medicine Hat; albeit, a bit dated. CHAT TV recently did an interview with Thor Jacobson (by the way, that is an awesome name), and Robin Laing, owners and technicians of the program.

Although I’m a little late on this one, I wanted to mention more new websites on Medicine Hat Media. Rims of Steel Optiks, local eyewear store now has a website. The website is fairly clean and simple, but includes all the information you would want to know about the store. This includes a full listing of exactly which brands and types of lenses, sunglasses, contacts, and frames they carry.

The website also features some things you may have not known about the store including the fact that they have a lens lab on site as well as vision testing services. You can call or email them to make an appointment. They are located at Bay #8 – 3295 Dunmore Road S.E. and you can reach them by phone at 403-526-9472.

Excerpt from the website:

Rims of Steel Optiks (division of Alberta Vision Centre Ltd.) has been serving Medicine Hat for 34 years. Rims of Steel is a unique optical dispensary and strives to deliver very different & unique eyewear, from other retailers in Medicine Hat.

With the recently implemented Medicine Hat Media option of using a Web-based feed, I want to mention a feed that I set up a month or so ago to allow listening to hour-long CBC Radio 2 Podcasts of mainly Canadian talent. You may also download the MP3 file directly to your computer from the feed as well.

One that I would like to mention is the podcast on October 7th, 2008 that features the famous Country artist, Corb Lund of Taber.

New look for the Santa Claus Fund website

New look for the Santa Claus Fund website

Lately, I’ve been trying to get around to featuring all the new local websites that have been popping up lately, but it’s really hard writing about all of them on a weekly basis now. It almost seems like around 2 or 3 of them pop up per week – I guess I am not helping the situation either, as it’s part of my profession, haha.

This week we have a new website for the Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund (Society). The logo was designed by local design studio, December 2nd, while the website was created and designed by TriCube Media for a Medicine Hat News organization. It’s great when three local companies can come together and develop something; albeit, TriCube Media and Medicine Hat News were already working together. The website URL has also changed over to “mhsantafund” rather than the obscure “mhscf”.

A great section of the site is the event section which is a huge list of events taking place as part of the Santa Claus Fund. The 17 or so events are all happening from July to December and most of them are recurring yearly. Hopefully we can even post a couple of them on Medicine Hat Media when they are near. There was a full story about the make-over posted in the Medicine Hat News today.

All information about the organization can be found on the new website.

Brooks has it’s own TV station now. Well… sort of.

Darin Crapo, an IT specialist in Brooks, has taken a video making hobby to a higher level. He created a series of tourism videos for the county of Newell. Working in this genre and doing these projects has brought him in contact with a number of aspiring videographers in his hometown.

Darin decided he would create a forum for himself and other video makers, where they could showcase Brooks, as well as Southern Alberta. It’s called 4U2CTV and is quickly becoming Brooks TV.
