BizPaL, a new online permit and licence research service network has launched on the City of Medicine Hat website thanks to the Business Support Office and Planning, Building and Development department.

BizPaL is an innovative and interactive service that incorporates the business permit and licence process for entrepreneurs, governments, and third party business service providers. BizPaL provides business clients, especially new business startups, with the information they need to meet all permit and licence requirements quickly and efficiently. BizPaL is available on-line whenever the client needs to seek information.

“BizpaL is a terrific, easy to use on-line tool that provides entrepreneurs and business owners with the permit and licence information for Medicine Hat that they need to grow or start their business,” says Keith Crush, business development officer. “This is part of an ongoing effort to ensure our community supports and encourages business development.”

A partnership between all levels of government – federal, provincial and municipal – BizPaL provides one stop easy access to all permit and licence requirements. “It is a great tool to cut down on the research and paperwork associated with prior licence and permit requirements,” says Crush.

For additional information on the BizPal network, please visit the City of Medicine Hat website at www.medicinehat.ca or http://bizpal.alberta.ca/

Pizza Hut "Book It" Program

Pizza Hut "Book It" Program

The Pizza Huts in Medicine Hat and Brooks have a special offer going on called Book It, which started on October 1, 2009, and will run until March 31, 2010. The offer is aimed at enticing kids in the younger grades of elementary school to read more, and the prize is free pizza. Who could say no?

The idea is for teachers to set monthly reading goals for each child in their class, which is then noted by their parents at home. Once the child reaches their goal, the teacher presents them with a free pizza certificate. The child (accompanied by a parent) can then go to any Medicine Hat or Brooks Pizza Hut to redeem a free one-topping personal pan pizza, as well as congratulations by the manager or service team. Each accomplished monthly reading goal afterwards will be rewarded with another personal pan pizza and a sticker of achievement.

The first step in the process requires the school to be registered with Pizza Hut (which could be done on their website), but unfortunately, the entry deadline was September 30, 2009, although the program renews every year. The second step is read, read, read. The third step is eat pizza. And the fourth step is to repeat.

I did this program in Regina when I was a kid, and personally speaking, it is an excellent way to motivate kids, because everyone loves pizza, although I do not ever recall being congratulated by the manager or any service staff…

  • Medicine Hat Pizza Huts are located at 1277 Trans Canada Hwy and #103 – 140 Maple Ave.
  • Brooks Pizza Hut is located #3 – 1131 2nd Street W.

Over the last few days a website called What’s Up in the Hat? has debuted using the Ning social networking service. I will be running  and managing the website and social media presence. We have also debuted our Facebook & Twitter pages this morning.

We will be providing updates for events happening in the Medicine Hat area stretching all the way into Southwestern Saskatchewan. Our duty is to be committed to you! If you have anything you want to post on the website feel free to do so and if you can’t drop me a line at Facebook or Twitter and I am sure you can contact me somehow through our main website.

We are providing local events, possibly local news coming soon, a blog, a chat to speak with other members who are online, groups for different communities/regions and more!

Please check us out at our main website, Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace

Tweeps is the word used to describe Twitter users and even though it sounds silly and a bit pretentious, it’s far better than saying “twitterers”. Either way, Twitter has become a truly invaluable tool in terms of media and social communication. Even if it is 75% useless personal comments or spam, that other 25% can inform you in ways other mediums can not (and will not). Based on who you follow, any single or general topic is available for your consumption – you can have this information instantly as the tweeps sends it out. Best of all, you can digest the full content easily because there is a limit of 140 characters, which plays a part in the mobile world, but also forces people to strictly write the most important things.

I previously did a post previously entitled “Medicine Hat Twitte’ers” in hopes to keep an up-to-date place to post Medicine Hat tweeps, but decided it would be too hard to upkeep. It’s far better to just take a gander at who Medicine Hat Media follows to get a complete list of active Medicine Hat tweeps. Hopefully nobody takes this post too seriously, it’s not like I am the Twitter expert or anything. Here is my pick for the best five Tweeps in Medicine Hat based on the below criteria and descriptions: THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

The Medicine Hat Vital Signs 2009 project has been completed and packaged up for the public to see.

As Vaughn explained in the previous Vital Signs article, Medicine Hat Vital Signs is a community “check up” that measures and assigns ratings in the community. The information was taken in by completing a survey on the Vital Signs website.

The final 28 page booklet, which was designed by Hide Away Studios Inc., includes statistical information population, education, police and security services, environment, plus much more, including an honourable mention to Medicine Hat Media on Page 23.

Shop the Hat Logo

Shop the Hat Logo

In the efforts to keep consumer’s shopping locally, TriCube Media has launched a new service today entitled “Shop the Hat”. Shop the Hat is a premier business directory website that focuses on local shopping and retail. It features a surprising amount of other information as well including an event list and calendar, contests, an article section and printable coupons (for some businesses). The best free services on site include ability for user-uploaded events, user-submitted articles and the Shop the Hat twitter account which features a feed of all the local deals and commerce going on around the city.

As most of you know, I currently work at TriCube Media, so I posted this at the risk of sounding bias. You should also know, I’m not going to post anything on the site under my name unless I endorse it on a personal level – which is the case for Shop the Hat. I’m all about local websites providing a good service for business owners and shoppers alike. We will be adding more and more over the upcoming months including more events, more articles, more businesses, adding more pictures and more information about those businesses. I think it will be an constantly evolving project.

The site is actually a re-make of an older TriCube Media website entitled “MH Gift Guide” which did some of the same things; however, it became apparent we needed a more targeted and community-driven version of it, a lot like the rebuild of the Medicine Hat Menus from its previous version.

Virtual Water - Beef Edition

Virtual Water - Beef Edition

This post does not directly have anything to do with media in Medicine Hat, but it does reflect on a lot of the dietary lifestyles of many Hatters and southeast Albertan’s in general, as we live in an area of the globe that produces a lot of corn, wheat, cattle and much more.

How many people consider how much water goes into the things they eat? Probably not many. I never thought about it until I stumbled upon a data layout one day from Smashing Magazine for how much water goes into many things that I commonly eat.

For instance, according to the data layout, it takes about 450 litres of water to grow one corn cob, about 500 litres of water to produce one pound of wheat and about 650 litres of water to produce one package of bread for toast.

Surprisingly, it takes about 4500 litres of water to process one 300 gram (10 oz) steak, and if that was not a lot of water on its own, if you think about what the cow consumes, it ends up being significantly more. On average, a cow will consume roughly 1300kg of grain, 7200kg of roughages and 24m^3 of water over the course of 3 years before being slaughtered, which ends up taking an average of about 15,300 litres of water.

If you find this kind of data as interesting as I do and you want to read more, check out the Virtual Water chart poster and website created by Timm Kekeritz: http://www.traumkrieger.de/virtualwater/

The City of Medicine Hat has launched its own Facebook page as part of its efforts to continue to improve communications with the public.

The city’s page includes events, news and other items of interest related to city services. Users of facebook.com can search for “City of Medicine Hat” to become a fan and join the city’s page or visit this direct link.

“The new Facebook page is part of the city’s plans to make communication with residents, businesses and potential newcomers as meaningful as possible by providing timely information and updates on city news, events, photos and much more,” says Jody Lamb, corporate communications manager. “Social networking sites like Facebook are becoming increasingly important in this day and age when people have more choices than ever to seek news and information.” THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

I found out about this internet auction last night which is just about the right time since some items are ending tomorrow night. Chat TV’s internet auction is a lot like the Big Bike Auction and the Kinsmen Auction in that, it is a local non-profit internet auction for businesses to submit items to. In return, these businesses receive advertising credit on their radio and TV stations. So in that sense, it is unlike the previously mentioned two, and the Chat TV Medicine Hat Internet Auction is not a charity in any way.

There seems to be around 75 items up for grab, with the more popular items being the gift certificates and gift packages which usually go for above their cost; however, since this is not for charity, they probably won’t go over their value – there’s quite a few Pizza Hut ones in this category.
