View Midnight Madness 2011 Instead

I just realized when we received a comment on our last years Midnight Madness article that this year’s event is quickly approaching. This year, Midnight Madness will be taking place on Thursday night (November 26th). Most of the deals and sales that most business owners promote will start at 6PM and last all the way till midnight. Some of the yearly events include Santa arriving at City Hall, a tree lighting ceremony, Christmas carols, ice sculptures, and the international festival of trees.

The Downtown Medicine Hat website has recently changed their page to promote the event as seen here which details, new comer to this year, The Monarch Theatre having free admission for Midnight Madness. Midnight Madness is primarily a downtown event, but I’m sure some other shops around town also take part. Or, in the case of the Medicine Hat Mall – they have their own event which is called Moonlight Madness which we also posted about last year – still waiting for some information on this one for this year.

Alternatively, for more information, there is a couple businesses listing their own events/information on the Shop the Hat website event list.

If you have never checked out CHAT TV’s YouTube channel, you may want to now.

They’ve just recently put up an Archive Playlist and are entertaining requests from people that want to see specific stories put up. Whether it was an old civic election, or the Tigers winning WHL championship, or one of the downtown fires.

Here’s one of the old stories that is on there now. I miss the Waterslides.

A bold title, but what other conclusions would someone jump to while reading a news article about a dozen businesses opposing the idea of a homeless shelter on South Railway Street?

Despite the shelter planning to operate between 8PM and 8AM, some parents are concerned for the safety of their children. What is a homeless person going to do? Kidnap your children and sell them back to you for a ham sandwich? If nothing else, these potentially dangerous people would be kept off the street, and away from children. If I was homeless, I would hope I was in a city that cared enough to put up a homeless shelter for the frigid winters. However, it seems most people are so blinded by the belief that homeless people are inherently evil that I would not invest much hope in a shelter.

It seems to me that the band NOFX has written a song about the shameful attitude of many Hatters toward homelessness:

Boylan Imaging is a professional photographic equipment and printing business located in the industrial area of Medicine Hat.

They do all sorts of printing from small documents to larger ones, CD labels, photographs, flyers, posters, and much more. You can also find an assortment of cameras and photographic equipment around the store, as well as picture frames.

Their website has a fresh looking design and offers informative ways to prepare your files and photographs for printing, including access to their digital server to upload things to be printed from your own computer, allowing you to only make one trip to pick up the finished product instead of two. The only critical downside to the design is that most navigational links have a very small font size, which probably makes it difficult to read for older clients.

The store is a primary go-to location for the graphic design students in the Visual Communications program at The Medicine Hat College, offering the students a special discount for their printing needs, and it is still remains the first place I go to for anything I need printed.

Risk Tournament

Risk Tournament

Recently launched, Game for Good is a website and non-profit volunteer organization (if you can call it that) whereby, true to the name, games are played for the good of something. In the case of this event, a Risk tournament will be taking place under the Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund. This has been set-up, facilitated, organized and promoted almost exclusively by Jace Anderson, voted the #1 Medicine Hat tweep earlier in the month by Medicine Hat Media. I know, I didn’t list them in numbers, but I think most people would agree he is the number one Medicine Hat Tweep anyways, especially after this. Also involved was Derek Gavey, who set up the website, he is a known commentator on Medicine Hat Media, and was also mentioned in the top Medicine Hat tweeps post.

Anyways, back to the matter at hand: RISK! For those of you that don’t know what Risk is, wait, never mind, Google it, why don’t you know what Risk is? There is no entry fee; however, there is a minimum donation of $20 that goes directly to the Santa Claus Fund and you will be issued a tax deductible receipt. The winner of the tournament will take home a nice $200 (including bragging rights) as well as possible other prizes to those who register early or even show up. The tournament will be taking place December 5th at 9:30AM, at the Cultural Centre and you need to register before December 1st.

There’s been several companies and businesses around the Hat that have either sponsored a table (money donation) or donated some goods and services for the tournament. These include Bean There! Roasting, Classic Construction, and Accessible Accessories so far on the docket. There is still sponsorship spots available if any business or organization is out there reading this.

More information can be found in the Media Release (PDF). I’m sure Jace will comment here if he has anything to add.

Although many Hatters probably are already aware of the service, I just stumbled on the Medicine Hat Police Service’s website section entitled “Caught On Camera“.

The service in most cases offers numerous screen shots of a suspect, or sometimes a video of them in action, their offense, the date and location of the offense, and the Police generally ask for anyone who has any information or can identify any of the offenders to call in at 403-529-8400; otherwise, call in to Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

This service is pretty great for local businesses and in helping the community, because no one wants to be robbed or victimized.

It sounds kind of far fetched to hear it, but without naming names, I have recently heard some stories about bullying going on at a local high school in Medicine Hat.

Most high school’s these days claim zero tolerance, dress codes to some extent and safe learning environments, but what about bullying? Personally, I cannot relate, because as far as I know, bullying never went on in my high school, or at least never to such an extent as to cause much emotional or physical harm. Still, I guess it happens every now and then these days by super tough teenagers that think they are all that.

The story I heard is that a kid in high school, after being a victim of prolonged bullying, finally had his arm broken by said bully and the school cannot (or will not?) do anything about it because it took place inside the gymnasium’s change room, where teachers apparently are not allowed to go while students are changing. In this case, the bully seems to have not even received a temporary suspension from school, but probably should have received an expulsion.

The natural instinct is for a parent to call the school and ask why their child was bullied and what is to be the repercussion for the actions of the bully, but if nothing is to be done, what then?

One alternative is to talk to the school Resource Officer, which according to the outline on the Medicine Hat Police website, will: “Identify and resolve problems involving student, school and the community.”and “Maintain open lines of communication with staff, students and parents, the community and police members.”

The second alternative is that as high school is the preparation for real life, give the bully a potent dosage of reality and call the Police.

No one wants to be a victim, so if victimized, why not stop it in its tracks?
