balldeep.ca Website

balldeep.ca was a project and website started by Grant Buchanan of My96FM in support of testicular cancer, a subject he has had first hand experience with. With the help of TriCube Media, local web developer/designers, he was able to launch a site to tell his story and spread the information in the process. Overall, he takes a very humor-driven approach to speaking on the subject matter which may help spread the word to a younger demographic, not unlike Tom Green that (when he was still relevant) filmed the whole process of his testicular cancer story, in a Tom Green-esque comedy fashion, which is actually on balldeep.ca as well.

The project is also in support of MANuary, a cause dedicated to promote and encourage awareness of testicular cancer in Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society. There’s still more chapters to be written, so make sure to check back to the site often to get the latest chapter and any updates to the home page which Grant has been doing as well.

The Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede has just recently got a much-needed face-lift on their old site. Although the old website gave visitors what they needed, it was hard to navigate and confusing to find specific things. The new build, developed and designed by TriCube Media boasts a much stronger western feel but keeping true to the red and blue of the known brand. It features all the same content, but a larger focus on photography and events. As this is the slow season for the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede workers, I would expect a lot more content to show up on the site over the next month(s).

Also, as you may have noticed, Jim Tennant, Corp. Develp. Mktg. of the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede has started to post on Medicine Hat Media, which is awesome by the way.

Recently launched side project/website, Medicine Hat Gamers offers gamers around the city (in any form) a comprehensive guide to buying/selling/trading within the city – as well as offering an informational tool at a look into the past with events or other things that no longer exist (kind of like the concept of arcades). I want to focus on that kind of stuff for the site; however, I have only lived here for 5 or so years. So if you have a story, business, event or anything in the past that is gaming related, please send it over – I would love to chronicle it over this new medium. Please also let me know of anything else I may have missed.

*UPDATE: The following isn’t exactly true in the blanket categorization of “Most Dangerous” as revealed by Brian, read on to the comments to find out more information. Furthermore, there was murders that happened in 2009 within Medicine Hat.*

National Media Magazine, MacLeans, has ranked Medicine Hat number 3 in there new rankings for Canada’s most dangerous cities with 159.96% above the national average.

In it’s latest results released Friday, Medicine Hat sits under Abbotsford, BC, and Thunder Bay, ON. But there is still a catch, they based all they’re information on 1.8 murders per 100 000 people for 2009.

Someone with the alias “Trevor in the Hat” posted this comment about it, as he has done the math:

The city I live in, Medicine Hat AB is listed as the third highest for murder. Now my math is horrible but let’s see if I can roughly figure this out. We are listed as having 159.96% compared to the national average of 1.8 murders per 100,000 people. That makes us at about 2.88 per 100,000 people. The official census for Medicine Hat in 2009 was 61,000 people, once again using my horrible math skills this works out to about 2 murders in 2009 and yet we are listed as more dangerous than Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver etc which have a dozen or more murders per year?

Trevor is completely correct, no murders occurred in Medicine Hat in 2009, so how can we be approximately 144% above Calgary for example?

They’re is a huge tie for the least dangerous city in Canada, with one of those 31 that have tied being St. Albert. Lethbridge sits in 49th place with a -39.16% difference.

It’s getting close to the vote date… very close in fact. October 18th will be the day where our new (or new-old) mayor of Medicine Hat will be decided. Along side the mayor, a number of aldermen will also be decided. There’s been a lot of controversy this time around, with a certain “email” being passed around, the issues at hand, political stunts… and now comes this. It’s all good though, because this was the first election I’ve ever cared about, coming from a 24 year old. With all this weight looming down on the city-folk and candidates alike, it’s time for some local election entertainment. Introducing the “Medicine Hat Election” website:

Something that has been causing a local stir recently is the newly re-launched and re-vamped community blog, MedHatBlog (formally referred to as “The Mad Hatter’s Weblog”). They also (probably jokingly/sarcastically) changed their motto from “Impartial and (mostly) unbiased options on Medicine Hat” to “Passionate and shamelessly biased opinions on Medicine Hat”.

MedHatBlog has always been known for the great political discussion and commentary, and now with the new one launching in prime election times, nothing has changed. There’s already a bunch of new posts talking about the election, issues, and the electoral candidates.

For those of you who don’t know, Etsy is an on-line version of the local “arts and craft sale”. Think of eBay, but for handmade and hand-crafted items. It took awhile to get started in Medicine Hat, and even longer to get more than a couple people participating, but now there’s quite a few vendors locally.

There’s quite the range for Medicine Hat vendors too, anything from knitted caps, stuffed animals, plushies, weird and crazy jewelery (from Rapscallion Design), vintage clothing, greeting cards, original artwork, and more.

KokaroWhile my latest project isn’t exactly local-centric, it is a local website, developed and designed by myself (with some help from Dusty Melling) with lots of members from Medicine Hat. It is a persistent browser based gaming site within a gaming site – kind of like an interactive mini game site where you play flash-based games to get gold, video game items, and badges from competing with other players for high scores. It also is a collectible site where you collect these nostalgic video game items to get a full set, enchant them, equip them, trade them, sell them, buy them among other interactions.

It’s a site that is in constant development with new things happening all the time. It has been up for awhile now, but only recently have I made some changes to make it more of a complete experience for newly registered users. Try it out and register!

The popular Facebook group for Hatters to buy, sell and trade locally has another home on 4U2CTV.

The Brooks multimedia station (4U2CTV.com AKA Brooks TV) which is known for showcasing videos with local content has created separate stations for several Alberta communities like Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. The Medicine Hat site was constructed with a classifieds section and has also embedded the Garage Sale Medicine Hat map.

Yours truly, the creator of the facebook group GARAGE SALE MEDICINE HAT, has been working with the creator of 4U2CTV.com the past few months to come up with the website.

The motivation behind the particular design of this website is to offer a better tool for those that enjoy GARAGE SALE MEDICINE HAT. Facebook worked well for the group because everyone seems to be on Facebook regularly and the group was only a click away. However, administrating a group of this kind is labour intensive in the confines of the platform and basically the group has outgrowned the clunky design of Facebook. Suffice to say, Facebook was never made for this type of activity.

On the 4U2CTV site, ads are categorized which is a feature you don’t have in Facebook. Another plus, ads self delete after a week and a half. There is no need to go back and remove old ads.

The Facebook group will remain, this new site is just another option that is 100% free.
